For fiscal year 1984-1985, 990 libraries of an estimated total of 1,200 California libraries returned annual report forms; theirresponses are reported in this document. Presented in the statistical tables are measures of activities (interlibrary loans borrowed and lent, circulation, total volumes, etc.), income, expenditures, staffing, and collections. These data are organized by library type and area population. Also provided is a state summary of library statistics for fiscal years 1981-82 through 1984-85 which includes total operating expenditures and salaries; library materials; full-time staff equivalents; total volumes; circulation; interlibrary loan borrowing and lending; and total number of reference questions answered during the year. A list of the libraries represented concludes this report. Statistical de...a from those reports are tabulated in this publication, with directorylistingspublished in the companion volume, California Library Directory. Although thestatistics program andthese publica- tions are promoted as widely as we can participation for most is volun- tary (public libraries are required by the Education Code to report an- nually to the State Librarian) and some choose not to do so. This makes the state summary less than complete. Libraries failing to return the re- port form two years in a row are dropped from the free publications dis- tribution list. At present, no state agency collects data on school li- braries, K-12. For fiscal year 1984-1985 we have reports from 990 libraries. We estimate there are atleast1,200 libraries in operation in California, exclusive of school libraries, co data in these publications are about 802 complete. At present, no state agencycollectsdata on school libraries, K-12. By type of library, the number reporting are: 169 public libraries with 2,945 public service outlets. By juris- dictions, there are 43 county, 106 city, eight combined city-county, and 12 district public libr:ries. By level of service, there are: 163 main libraries. Administrative headquarters are not included, and some county or district libraries have no main library. 587 branch libraries. A branch isan extension library open some part of each of five days a week, has at least 1,400 square feet of floor space, a general book collection of at least 7,000 volumes, and is staff- ed with the equivalent of at least one librarian and one clerical employ- ee during hours open for service. 340 library stations. A station is a library structure smaller than a branch, providing a lower level of service. 1,855 mobile library stops. A mobile library stop is a location vis- ited by a bookmobile or other traveling library. There are 80 mobile li- braries in operation this year. Combining main, branch andstation figures, there are 1,090 fixed public library outlets. 184 academic libraries: 29 state supported academic libraries. 102 community college libraries. 53 private academic libraries. 467 special libraries: 18 popular libraries at U.S. armed forces installations. 28 legal libraries. )3 medical libraries. 10 religious libraries. 178 libraries operated by for profit organizations. 140 libraries operated by non-profit organizations. 112 state agency libraries: 39 resident libraries at state institutions and schools. 20 legal libraries. 11 medical libraries. 42 special libraries. 58 county law libraries.
