He was seemingly referring to a book – ‘Pakistan or Partition of India’ authored by Dr. Ambedkar in 1940 on the contemporary problem that had seized the imagination of the entire country. The book was so exhaustive and objective in its treatment of the problem that soon it was used as an authentic resource by both, Hindus as well as Muslims in their pre-independence parleys. None could ever accuse it of any bias for or against any community. Such a book was being used by Mr. katiyar to tarnish the image of Ambedkar by painting him so petty as to be against Muslims. It was not only an issue of hurting the sentiments of entire Dalit community for whom Ambedkar is a God, but it was also an affront to all those who considered Ambedkar as an icon for liberal democracy. The book does not entirely concern with the Katiyar controversy, however. -

On one hand the RSS combine has been very active to prove that RSS ideology is close to Ambedkar’s ideology. In this direction RSS mouth pieces Organizer (English) and Panchjanya (Hindi) brought out special supplements on the occasion of anniversary of Ambedkar, praising him. This is very surprising as RSS is for Hindu nation while Ambedkar has pointed out that Hindu Raj will be the biggest calamity for dalits. The second debate is about Ambedkar-Gandhi. This came to forefront with Arundhati Roy’s introduction to Ambedkar’s ‘Annihilation of Caste’ published by Navayana. The Decline of Buddhism in India
The Decline of Buddhism in India It is almost impossible to provide a continuous account of the near disappearance of Buddhism from the plains of India. This is primarily so because of the dearth of archaeological material and the stunning silence of the indigenous literature on this subject. Interestingly, the subject itself has remained one of the most neglected topics in the history of India. In this book apart from the history of the decline of Buddhism in India, various issues relating to this decline have been critically examined. Following this methodology, an attempt has been made at a region-wise survey of the decline in Sind, Kashmir, northwestern India, central India, the Deccan, western India, Bengal, Orissa, and Assam, followed by a detailed analysis of the different hypotheses that propose to explain this decline. NARIMAN, J. Leave granted. 1. The present appeal arises out of the demolition of Babri Masjid. We are concerned in this case with two FIRs lodged on 6th December, 1992. The first viz. Crime No.197 of 1992, is against lakhs of kar sewaks alleging the offences of dacoity, robbery, causing of hurt, injuring/defiling places of public worship, promoting enmity between two groups on grounds of religion, etc. The IPC offences were, therefore, under Sections 153-A, 295, 297, 332, 337, 338, 395 and 397. The second FIR 1 viz. FIR No.198 of 1992 was lodged against eight persons named therein - Mr. L.K. Advani, Mr. Ashok Singhal, Mr. Vinay Katiar, Ms. Uma Bharati, Ms. Sadhvi Ritambara, Mr. Murli Manohar Joshi, Mr. Giriraj Kishore and Mr. Vishnu Hari Dalmia, two of whom are dead due to passage of time viz. Mr. Ashok Singhal and Mr. Giriraj Kishore. The FIR alleges offences under Sections 153-A, 153-B and Section 505 IPC. 46 further FIRs pertaining to cognizable offences and 1 FIR pertaining to non- cognizable offences were also lodged. Initially, a Special Court set up at Lalitpur was to try these cases but subsequently notifications were issued by the State Government, after consultation with the High Court, dated 8 th September, 1993 whereby these cases were to be tried by a Special Court at Lucknow. -

Five of her close family members were murdered, including her daughter. Afsara’s two remaining children survived but suffered serious burn injuries. Afsara filed a complaint with the police but believes that the police released those that she identified, along with many others. The reasons for this action have been attributed to religious grievances. However, little attention has been given to the role played by Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence in supporting the bombings. Taking into account what has emerged in the public domain over the last 28 years regarding ISI links with D-Company and with international jihadist groups more generally, a re-assessment of the 1993 bombings is required. Hitherto regarded as an example of ‘crime-terror convergence’, it appears that D-Company might be more aptly considered an instrument of covert action. In what remains the bloodiest-ever terror incident on Indian soil, 257 civilians were killed by 12 near-synchronous explosions. The bombs had been assembled using military-grade explosive smuggled from abroad. The events of that day, Friday 12 March 1993, are considered by scholars as an example of hybridity between organized crime and political terrorism (Rollins, Wyler and Rosen, 2010: 14-16). -

Other party leaders, according to the Political Handbook of the World 2011, include Uddhav Thackeray, the party's executive president, and Anant Gheete, a leader in the Lok Sabha (2011, 632). The Lok Sabha (House of the People) is a unit of the national Parliament, along with the Rajya Sabha (Council of States) (India 16 Sept. 2010). Members of the Lok Sabha are directly elected by eligible voters every five years (ibid.). In 2009, the Shiv Sena won 11 seats in a general election (Political Handbook of the World 2011, 632). The Political Handbook of the World notes that Shiv Sena is "closely linked" to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) (2011, 632). The Press Trust of India (PTI) reports that on 6 March 2011, the BJP leader "said his party's alliance with Shiv Sena will remain intact at [the] Maharashtra and national level" (6 Mar. 2011). In 14 April 2011 correspondence with the Research Directorate, an honorary senior fellow and chairman of the Centre for Multilevel Federalism, at the Institute of Social Sciences in New Delhi, noted that the Shiv Sena was "the main opposition party" in the Maharashtra legislative assembly of 2004 to 2009. -

H i C N Households in Conflict Network The Institute of Development Studies - at the University of Sussex - Falmer - Brighton - BN1 9RE www.hicn.org The Agency and Governance of Urban Battlefields: How Riots Alter Our Understanding of Adequate Urban Living1 2 Jaideep Gupte HiCN Working Paper 122 September 2012 Abstract: For the first time in close to 100 years, India reports higher population growth in its urbanised areas than across its vast rural landscape. However, a confluence of vast urbanisation and scarcity of resources has implied heightened levels of localised violence, centred in and around already impoverished neighbourhoods. This therefore has a disproportionate impact in further marginalising poor communities, and is at odds with the notion that cities are incontestably and inevitably the context of sustained poverty eradication. And yet, we know relatively little about the mechanics of security provisioning in Indian cities at large. The central argument in this paper is that violent urban spaces have a profound impact on how safety and security are understood by the state as well as the urban poor, thereby redefining the parameters of adequate urban living. I look in detail at how the 1992-1993 riots in Mumbai unfolded in a group of inner-city neighbourhoods, and find that specific acts of brutality and violence during the riots continue to shape current understandings of the „safe city‟. In doing so, I also find that the nature and form of informal urban space affects the mechanics by which the state endeavours to control violence, while individual acts of public violence function as markers that legitimate the use of, and reliance on, extralegal forms of security provision. -

Overlooked Danger: The Security and Rights Implications of Hindu Nationalism in India Smita Narula* INTRODUCTION As a region, South Asia has gained significant prominence in the eyes of the international community as a focal point for the U.S.-led war against terrorism. So-called Islamic fundamentalism in South Asia and the Middle East is the subject of much debate and analysis and the justification for ra- cially and religiously charged immigration and detention policies in the West. Much overlooked is the dramatic rise of Hindu nationalism in India and the dangerous and even violent policies espoused by the ruling Bha- ratiya Janata Party ("BJP") and its sister organizations-policies that have already resulted in considerable violence against India's Muslim, Christian, and Dalit, or "untouchable," minorities.
