Wasserman I usually take the opportunity in this missive to tell of new personnel and changes in the program, I am happy to report that there are no major L D NDBC Techincal Publications O ce changes since last issue, I am hoping that this is a good sign! Leigh Ellis You may have noticed in this and the April issue of the Mariners Weather Log the lack of ship awards. This is not an indication of A, P, L poor performance by the VOS ships. On the contrary as mentioned : previously, the observation counts have never been better. There was Mr. John L Wasserman, Editorial Supervisor a slight delay in getting the awards, however I am happy to report they Mariners Weather Log will be “on the streets” before the next issue. -

Virginia and Bill Maclean, from Inverness, are passengers on the Costa Pacifica and fear they are being sent into the “eye of the storm” after the latest on board announcement. All passengers apart from French nationals have been stopped from leaving the ship, which docked in Marseille, France, on Friday morning. The decision reportedly nearly sparked a riot on board, with the couple's fellow passenger Ted Hills, from Lockerbie, revealing fights had broken out between a few people. The state Department of Transportation Harbors Division said six Hawaii residents and an injured passenger and her spouse were allowed to leave the cruise ship Maasdam docked at Pier 2 on Friday after some uncertainty whether they would be permitted to get off — and have to sail elsewhere. -

The rhythm remains elevated, with 18 ships per week. In number of ships to be demolished as well as tonnage, India, with 120 ships (42%), remains destination number 1 before Bangladesh with 55 (24%), Pakistan with 25 (11%), and China with 23 (9%). The accumulated demolition will permit the recycling of nearly 2 million tons of metal. The crisis is over ! The prices offered by the demolition yards have significantly increased and continue to increase in the yards of the Indian subcontinent, but also in China; they have reached $400, even $500 for oil tankers and more for ships containing stainless steel. -

Abstract: On Thursday, October 1, 2015, the SS El Faro, a 40-year-old cargo ship owned by TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico and operated by TOTE Services, Inc., was on a regular route from Jacksonville, Florida, to San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it foundered and sank in the Atlantic Ocean about 40 nautical miles northeast of Acklins and Crooked Island, Bahamas. The ship had sailed directly into the path of Hurricane Joaquin, carrying a crew of 33, including 5 Polish contract repair workers. All those aboard perished in the sinking. As part of its accident investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) led a joint effort with the US Navy, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and the National Science Foundation to locate the ship’s wreckage and retrieve its voyage data recorder (VDR). The VDR was pulled from 15,250 feet below the ocean surface in August 2016 during the third undersea mission and yielded more than 26 hours of parametric data and audio files. -
