In the 1970s, eight out of 10 students rode or walked to school but today that number has dropped to just two out of 10.

Students who ride or walk to school contribute to their minimum physical activity level of 60 minutes per day. They are also more focused and ready to learn compared to those who are driven.

On Ride2School day this year, students could be seen cycling, scootering, skateboarding and rollerblading throughout Kew and surrounds.

Paul Burke The wonders of Head of House – Spinola, Senior Campus World Challenge facilitate student-led expeditions to some of the most unique and World Challenge remote locations in the world. They strive to build the life skills young people need to live a expeditions life of courage, kindness and adventure. Since 2011, almost 300 Xavier College students have participated in World Challenge expeditions to locations such as Nepal, Borneo, Ecuador, Tanzania, Peru and India. Each destination offers a variety of opportunities for cultural immersion, personal challenge and community engagement.

World Challenge expeditions are student-led. Managing and implementing the budget, booking transport and deciding on where to eat and sleep are just some of the responsibilities that students encounter. Teams delegate leadership tasks within the group giving all members the opportunity to experience these roles. A further distinguishing aspect of a World Challenge trip is the expectation that students contribute significantly to the cost of their trip. Many raise at least half; some the entire amount.

The destination for Xavier College World Challenge expeditions this year was Costa Rica in Central America. 39 students and six staff were divided into three teams, each with separate itineraries to experience. In the months leading up to the expedition teams met to plan their itinerary, raise funds for their project phase and start organising team roles.

Costa Rica, which literally means ‘Rich Coast’ is a relatively narrow country, with weather patterns deeply influenced by the large oceans on either side. The terrain is mountainous and there are many volcanoes, six of which are active. Five percent of the world’s biodiversity is found within the country due to the high rainfall and humidity.

The Osa Peninsula provided ample opportunity for students to learn more about, and assist with, fauna and flora conservation. Working alongside marine biologists, students joined the sea turtle patrol, releasing hatchlings to sea. They also cleared plastics and rubbish from the turtle habitat and helped improve pathways to limit the impact of tourism. Students also spent a day planting trees in the Maria De Dota region as part of a carbon-offset program which aims to address the impact of carbon emissions in travelling to the country.

Other highlights of the expedition included visiting cloud forest sanctuaries, seeing unique wildlife such as the two-toed sloth, spider monkeys, a variety of different tree frogs and tarantulas, viewing amazing waterfalls, zip-lining for 1,500m across vast valleys, relaxing in natural hot springs from nearby volcanoes, conversing with locals in Spanish and learning how to cook Gallo Pinto, the staple cuisine of Costa Rica.

So many incredible experiences and learning moments left all of us with a deep gratitude for such an opportunity, as well as an appreciation for our Tom O’Sullivan admires the view in Costa Rica responsibility to improve our world.
