Socrates, however, is offered advice: exercise. This dissertation examines Plato’s Parmenides as an explicitly pedagogical enterprise, presenting an advanced dialectical training for students. Socrates here is an exemplar of a philosophical student, not yet a mature master. Plato offers the student of the dialogue exercise [gymnastike], as a means to prepare him or her to critically re- evaluate Socrates’ depiction of forms. I show, contrary to dominant readings of the dialogue, that the hypotheses help the student to overcome the problems of an immature notion of forms, one that still attributes to forms qualities that are only proper to sensible or perceivable things. The student is asked to consider “one” [hen], the subject of the hypotheses, through a web of mutually contradictory characterizations. -

Contemporary intuitionists claim that moral knowledge consists of those propositions that are known by intellectual reflection (intuition), by moral observation or by moral emotion, or which are capable of being cogently inferred from propositions which are items of moral knowledge. Some intuitionists, such as Michael Huemer, admit only intuition (of particular or of general propositions) as a non-inferential source of moral knowledge; but others, such as Robert Audi, allow also moral observation and moral emotion. I offer a critique of contemporary intuitionist theories that depends upon their common structure: analysis of the abstract features of the approach show it to be an inadequate account of moral knowledge. I use Huemer and Audi as representative intuitionists. The differences between their views, and between their views and those of other intuitionists, are incidental at the level of generality of my argument. In section 2, I outline the contemporary intuitionist approach to moral knowledge. In sections 3, 4 and 5, I show that the problem of inter-cultural conflict undermines the claims that moral intuition, moral observation and moral emotion, respectively, are sources of non-inferential moral knowledge. I also explain the inadequacy of the intuitionist attempt to solve the problem by invoking bias or intellectual or moral failings. -

New Haven CT: Yale University Press, 2009. 498 pages. ISBN: 978-0-0300-11668-7. $85.00 US, $97.95 CDN. Born in Andalusia in 1126, Averroes (or Ibn Rushd) is generally considered one of the most influential Arabic classical philosophers, and his impact on Western thought, through the interpretations of Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and others, can hardly be overestimated. Although Averroes wrote extensively in the fields of religious law (Bidayat al-Mujtahid wa Nihayat al-Muqtasad), philosophy (The Incoherence of the Incoherence) and their relationship (Decisive Treatise), his nickname, the Great Commentator, is a result of Averroes’ prolific commentaries on Greek philosophy, and particularly the works of Aristotle. The date of completion of Averroes’ Long Commentary is, although debatable, usually given at around 1186 C.E., and while its chronological relationship to the Short and Middle Commentaries (and therefore status as Averroes’ ‘final opinion’ on the De Anima) is debatable, the Long Commentary certainly presents Averroes’ most detailed examination of the De Anima. In form, it is basically a line-by-line exegesis, with Averroes reproducing Aristotle’s work and then proceeding to provide explanation, extension, and interpretation. Averroes’ Long Commentary is key to tracing how Averroes interpreted Aristotle’s work on the soul and how his own concept of the soul developed from his reading of Aristotle. But we have set sail, and wherever the argument, like the wind, should bear us, there we must go.1 Republic 394d At 435c–d and again at 504b ff., Socrates indicates that there is a “longer and fuller way” that one must take in order to get “the best possible view” of the soul and its virtues. But in neither passage does Socrates take this “longer way.” At 435c–d he accepts Glaucon’s plea to continue with the “methods” they have used so far, giving argu- ments “at that level.” In the text that follows his reminder at 504b ff. he restricts himself to an indirect indication of its goals by his images of sun, line, and cave and to a programmatic outline of its first phase, the five mathematical studies. If we stay within the dramatic con- text of the dialogue, we can see why Socrates offers such a partial and incomplete characterization. As keen and receptive as they are on political and ethical matters, Glaucon and Adeimantus are lim- ited interlocutors on metaphysical issues; they have not undergone the mathematical education Socrates prescribes, and they are not in a position to raise critical questions about the Forms or the structure the Forms imply for city and soul. Accordingly, in his initial will- ingness to forgo the “longer way” (435d) and in his later very intro- ductory account of it, Socrates measures his words to what Glaucon and Adeimantus are prepared to understand. -

But politics is neither inherently shady nor specific to back rooms. In fact, as long as society is differentiated along ethnic, sex and social class lines, politics pervades all of social life. You are involved in politics and so is your mother. A statement or decision is political when either the content of the issue is viewed differently by. people from different social groups, e.g. race, sex, age, or the decision has different con- sequences for different social groups, or both. -

7 Aristotle on Greatness of Soul Roger Crisp n the recent revival of interest in Aristotelian ethics, relatively little attention has been paid to the virtue of greatness of soul (megalopsuchia). This is partly Ibecause of the focus on the more structurally central concepts of Aristotle’s theory, in particular happiness (eudaimonia) and virtue (aret¯e). But in fact a study of greatness of soul can reveal important insights into the overall shape of Aristotelian ethics, including the place of external goods and luck in the virtuous life, and the significance of “the noble” (to kalon). Further, Aristotle describes the great-souled person in more detail than any other, and calls greatness of soul a “sort of crown of the virtues” (NE IV.3.1124a1–2). Many have found aspects of the portrait of the great-souled person in the Nicomachean Ethics repellent or absurd, but that is no good reason for the student of Aristotle to shy away from it. In this chapter, I shall elucidate Aristotle’s account of greatness of soul, addressing some puzzles internal to that account and bringing out its place in, and implications for, the ethics of Aristotle and of those modern writers influenced by him. Greatness of Soul as a Virtue To understand greatness of soul as an Aristotelian virtue requires first understand- ing Aristotle’s conception of virtue itself. Aristotle distinguishes virtues into two classes – intellectual virtues and virtues of character – corresponding to distinct aspects of the human soul (NE I.13). Greatness of soul is a virtue of character, though, like all such virtues, it requires its possessor to have the intellectual virtue of practical wisdom (phron¯esis; NE VI.13). -

Taylor Marquette University This article explicates Averroes's understanding of human knowing and abstraction in this three commentaries on Aristotle's De Anima. While Averroes's views on the nature of the human material intellect changes through the three commentaries until he reaches is famous view of the unity of the material intellect as one for all human beings, his view of the agent intellect as 'form for us' is sustained throughout these works. In his Long Commentary on the De Anima he reveals his dependence on al-Farabi for this notion and provides a detailed critique of the Farabian notion that the agent intellect is 'form for us' only as agent cause, not as our true formal cause. Although Averroes argues that the agent intellect must somehow be intrinsic to us as our form since humans 2tieper se rational and undertake acts of knowing by will, his view is shown to rest on an equivocal use of the notion of formal cause. -

Abstract The need for continual progress in medical research is one among the challenges today facing humankind. On- going, necessary medical research involving animal subjects will be defended from a Utilitarian standpoint. Animal experimentation can be conducted in such a way that injury and suffering to the animal subjects can be minimized. Clinical studies have been necessary for the eradication of many diseases, such as smallpox and polio and promise similar results for other medical conditions in the future. The ethical and emotional demands placed upon the experimenter during clinical trials, as well as the suffering of the animal subjects, presents us with an ethical dilemma concerning the moral justification of animal experimentation for clinical studies. -
