The financial statements of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upper Midwest Chapter present only a portion of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s operations, and they include material intercompany income, expenses, assets and liabilities. Accordingly, the financials do not individually present a meaningful picture of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s financial transactions as a whole. This has been an incredible inaugural year for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upper Midwest Chapter. In 2012, the chapter provided support to thousands of people affected by MS in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and several counties in western Wisconsin and Nebraska. We provided nearly $800,000 in financial assistance to help people with MS maintain independence and overcome the financial obstacles that often come with chronic illness. We connected people to the information and resources they needed to move their lives forward. Our MS Navigators® responded to more than 4,000 calls and emails, helping people navigate the complex world of insurance companies, Medicare and Social Security; learn ways to manage MS; and find solutions to family and employment issues. And we not only addressed the needs of people in our chapter area, we made tremendous strides in our quest to STOP MS in its tracks, RESTORE lost function and END MS forever. Right now, 20 countries around the world are working together on 325 cutting-edge research projects, fueling more potential MS therapies than any other time in history. None of this would be possible without each and every one of you. In 2012, 3,500 people volunteered more than 60,000 hours to power the MS movement. You stuffed envelopes, made phone calls, hosted rest stops, led MS clubs and planned events. You rallied your friends and families to bike, walk and run. You held garage sales and car washes. You knocked on doors, wrote letters and engaged your Facebook friends. You beat the streets and waved your MS flags proudly. All your hard work paid off, because together, we raised a remarkable $7 million to move us closer to a world free of MS!

Thank you,

Holly Anderson Carol M. Houghtby Chapter President Board of Trustees Chair

Norman Cohn Hope Award Dave Britz Dave Britz joined the MS movement as a cycling enthusiast 18 years ago, when he rode his first Bike MS: MS 150 Ride. Early on, Dave said he had no personal connection to the disease but loved to ride his bike and wanted to do something good in his community. Since then, Dave has become a powerful member of the MS movement. He’s ridden countless miles, raised nearly $150,000, and inspired friends, family and strangers to help end MS, too. He’s a champion for every chapter volunteer and is an enthusiastic volunteer himself. You can always tell when Dave rolls into a Bike MS rest stop. He’s the first to lead a cheer and gets all the riders clapping and congratulating volunteers on their hard work. Dave said, “Joining the movement is my high in life — doing something for someone else.”

MS stops people from moving. We exist to make sure it doesn’t.

We help each person address the challenges of living with MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services that help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. The Upper Midwest Chapter serves more than 17,000 people living with MS in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, along with several counties in western Wisconsin and one county in Nebraska.
