Route Information Route Name Hares Pillar 1 (H1) and Tortoises Pillar 1 (T1) A lung-busting rollercoaster of a start! If you have mobility issues in particular knee problems then maybe skip this leg. Enjoy a short downhill start from the Village Hall. Climb out of towards . In 1878 Mortehoe had a church, school, post office, 3 carpenters, shoemaker, 4 builders, 2 bakers etc and there was no Woolacombe. Then the railway arrived.. Lovely views back along the entire 2.5 mile length of Woolacombe Sands and over to Island, purchased in 1969 by British millionaire Jack Hayward and donated to the National Trust. Venture onto the around Morte Point, notorious for being the site of many shipwrecks. Morte is death for you French lovers of course. Pass Whiting Cove and Rockham Bay, keeping an eye out for seals. And whales. Sorry I mean . Yep, two countries in one walk....bonus! Pass Bull Point with its decommissioned . Then several steep ups and downs past Bennett's Mouth and Damagehue Cliffs before we get to the road leading down into Lee car park and toilets. By tradition, flapjacks hopefully. Lee village lies at the foot of what is known locally as Fuchsia Valley Route Summary Total Distance 5.3mi (8.5km) Hares 2h 15min Elevation 0ft at lowest point Tort 2h 45min 230ft at highest point Total Ascent 1486ft Elevation Profile

Route Information Route Name Hares Pillar 4 (H4) and Tortoise Pillar 3 (T3) Refreshed and raring to get back to it? Just starting o? Whichever. We're o to the beach (minus buckets and spades) and it's a long one. It's nearly 2.5 miles and there's almost always plenty of decently firm sand to walk on. If you prefer, take o your shoes and socks and stroll along the water's edge (just bring a towel maybe in your bag!). Unless you've got burst blisters - salt in that case isn't the best of ideas.... Aer a water refill and loo pit stop at Putsborough, it's onto the gently sloping headland leading to Baggy Point. Fantastic part of the walk, views looking over to Lundy Island, Bay and back down Woolacombe Sands are sensational. The sandstone rocks at Baggy Point are popular with climbers. From here it's a simple one mile walk to another magical beach at Croyde, oen a magnet for surfers wanting to catch big Atlantic Ocean waves. We stop for well earned cake at the National Trust car park just as we get into Croyde. I can't promise you the weather but I can promise you views of not one, not two but three world-class beaches. You already know Croyde and Woolacombe but we can add Sands. When we leave the Croyde car park there are two options for getting across the beach, one slightly longer involving a footbridge and the 'straight through the water channel' approach. It probably depends if you want damp feet and how it's flowing! On around the coast path and we pass a 'lighthouse' featured recently on Grand Designs on TV. It's not quite finished as you will see.... Lovely flat section of coast path now to . You have views over to Burrows, the largest sand system in . At the heart of the North Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty it is a UNESCO designated biosphere reserve approximately 1,000 hectares in size. So we are not going in there and getting lost! Instead it's up the path onto Saunton Down. And what goes up must come down so it's a lovely stroll down into the fringes of Croyde and back via some nice country lanes and bridleways to Putsborough to end the penultimate leg. Route Information Route Name Hares Pillar 6 (H6) and Tortoises Pillar 5 (T5) The last lap! Tired legs no doubt and yes a bit of a gradual climb for 1 mile then mainly flat or down to the end. The area around the Sands and at Woolacombe was used by the Allied Forces as part of D-Day training because of its similarity to the Normandy beaches. One highlight of this section is the views looking over to Morte Point and back to Baggy Point and Hartland in the distance. Truly breath-taking. There's a lovely cairn at the top of Potters Hill. Get here and you've smashed it with only one mile to plod on. A heroes' welcome awaits. Well done!!
