Notes for Mary Ann Varder: General Notes: On Wednesday 27th September 1871, a twenty eight year old fair haired lady with blue eyes stood with her husband on the deck of an 88-ton schooner. Holding on tightly, for she was too weak to stand, she looked across the water and said: ’Dearest, you have brought me to this country and here I must stay, for I can never, never face the ocean voyage again.’ They had arrived at (via Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo and the Falkland Islands).

Her new home was to be and she had come from Simmonds Farm in Harberton, Devon. The journey had taken almost two years.

Consequently, Thomas and Mary Bridges became the founding family of the present day community of Tierra del Fuego, the most southern part of South America. A wild, desolate, hard land with an unkind climate and long, dreary winter nights, cut off from civilization.

Thomas Bridges met Mary Varder at a meeting of school teachers in Bristol in 1869. Five weeks later, on 7th August, they were married in Harberton, Devon and two days later embarked on the S.S. Onega as missionaries to the cannibal Indians of Tierra del Fuego. Mary was one of six daughters of Stephen and Ann Varder of Harberton. A younger sister of Mary, Joanna Varder, joined the settlement at Ushuaia in 1874 - who, having spent much of her life on the farm in Harberton, had become an authority on the preparation of butter, junket, cheese, jam, and strawberries and cream; and an expert at rearing chickens, ducks and geese. The Yahgan Indian word for "aunt on the mother’s side" is "yekadahby", which literally means "little mother". Hence Joanna came to be known as Yekadahby.

On 31st December, 1874, their third child Esteban Lucas Bridges, was born. He was christened Stephen Lucas, but being an Argentine citizen by birth, later adopted the Spanish translation. Lucas Bridges went on to write "Uttermost Part of the Earth" - a detailed account of the family’s life amongst the local Yahgan Indians.

Thomas Bridges resigned as the Superintendent Missionary but decided to settle in his adopted country. In 1886 he met Argentine President General Roca in who said to him: "How can my government compensate you inPage some 4 measureof 26 for theSunday, life of Septemberself-sacrifice 28, you2008 have 1:45:56 led, PM and the humanitarian work you have accomplished?" Thomas Bridges replied: "By giving me a piece of land where I can settle and make a home with my children, born in the country."

He went home to Harberton, Devon and at Simmonds Farm pre-fabricated a large wooden frame house. He chartered the "Sheperdess", a brigantine of 360 tons, to take it back with other cargo. This consisted of local bricks, limestone, a young South Devon bull, four Romney Marsh rams, a couple of Devonshire pigs, and two Collie dogs. Two local carpenters accompanied him.

On the precipitous coast in the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, the family established a new settlement in 1887 and called it Harberton.

In 1898, Thomas Bridges, aged 56, suffered a severe hemorrhage and died in a friend’s house in Buenos Aires on the 15th of July.

Mary Bridges, nee Varder, and her sister, Joanna, returned permanently to England in 1912. Mary died on the 28th of December, 1922, and was buried alongside her sister Joanna (who had died 18 months previously) in the churchyard of Shipbourne near Tonbridge in Kent.

Today, five generations later, there is a thriving and large family in Harberton, Tierra del Fuego.

In April, 1880, Mary’s next younger sister, Honor, was married in Harberton, Devon to the well-known photographer, Elijah Yeoman, from Barnard Castle, Durham.

Lucas Bridges returned to England to join the Army for the First World War. After being demobilized in 1919, he decided to go to and was accompanied by John Yeoman, son of Elijah and Honor Yeoman, where they set up the Devuli Ranch. Notes for Richard Ferris Varder: General Notes: The story of the life of Richard F. Varder is entitled, "Memorial of a Quiet Life" - "quiet", not in the sense of being inactive, but because most of his service for the Lord was carried on among isolated groups, far removed from the busy haunts of men, in out-of-the-way places, up in the backwoods of northwestern Canada, where often the temperature was fifty degrees below zero for weeks. Sometimes he lived in mud huts, eating bread, lard and salt,, with a change of menu only when someone shot wild meat. In some of these places there were no churches or schools. The people were sent there by the government to homestead because the drought had destroyed everything in the south. At a Chicago Conference when giving a brief account of his work in anada, he said that he would much prefer to stand before a few simple country folks and declare the message of God than to stand before crowds. He was a pioneer in the truest sense of the word. Richard Varder was born in England, April 30th, 1858, the seventh of eight children. His mother died when Richard was only fourteen. He was a very studious boy, so was educated to be a school teacher. ´fi had always been somewhat religiously inclined, at times zealously so. I was the son of devout Christian parents; said my prayers from early childhood, read my Bible regularly, attended unday school, and when I was old enough, was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the choir and a Good Templar. persevered in this manner of life until I was nearly seventeen years of age, but I was not happy. My religion was a heavy burden to me, sometimes almost intolerable. The fact is, I was a ´‚goat´™ trying to adopt the manners and habits of a ´‚sheep´™, and found it hard work, and beside this, I had so many falls in the path I had mapped out for myself that it was getting more manifest to my conscience that I was not a ´‚sheep´™ after all. ´fiOn thing that made me more uneasy than anything else was that the things which were burdensome to me were a delight to my father, who knew that it was to be truly born again. I could see that he possessed something to which I was an utter stranger. He had discernment enough to see beneath the surface of my outwardly religious life and told me firmly but affectionately that I must be born again or I could not enterPage the kingdom 13 of 26 of God. Sunday,On the morningSeptember of 28,my 2008 sixteenth 1:45:56 PM birthday he grasped my hand and said, ´‚Dick, my boy, I trust that ere you are seventeen you will be a Christian,´™ and I hoped so, too, although I hung my head and said nothing. I began then to be really anxious about my soul. A picture of the judgment spoken of in Matthew 25 was used of God to bring more vividly before my mind the subject of eternal torment and trembled at the thought of having to meet God." Soon after Richard Varder was saved, he learned the truth of baptism and identified himself with brethren meeting in the name of Lord Jesus Christ alone. He began to serve the Lord in open-air work. In 1881 Mr. Varder emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada, which was a town of tents and log huts at that time. Here he worked at his carpenter’s trade in the summer, preaching when he had the opportunity, and gave himself wholly to the Lord’s work during the winter. In 1884, in the company of Roland and George Benner, he took up a homestead in Saskatchewan, and while there conducted Sunday schools, gospel meetings, and Bible readings. He was there at the outbreak of the second Indian rebellion and learned to speak the Cree language. Later he sold the farm and was associated with John Rae, John Grimason, Donald Ross, Alfred Goff and others in their work in Manitoba and the Dakotas. Their hardships were many. Mr. Varder would preach until his funds were exhausted and then go back to carpenter work for a few months. ´fiM business is to preach the gospel, and I build houses to pay expenses." In 1895 Mr. Varder married Miss Edith Newcomb and a year later their first son was born. For a few years, they lived in Kenora, Ontario, and then returned to Winnipeg, living there four years. In 1904 he took up a homestead, much against the wishes of the assembly who felt he should devote all his time to the Lord’s service. The move seemed to have been a mistake. He lost all he had; his gospel work here was much hampered; an audience was hard to get, and he felt this inactivity keenly. uring these years his two youngest children were born. In the winter of 1916 he moved to Selkirk and the following month the eldest son was saved - the first fruits of coming back into the Lord’s path. For two summers he ran a market garden, preaching whenever he had opportunity and later got work in a government fish hatchery which was being built on the Dauphin River. In the evening he would get some of the men to row him across the river where he would preach to the Indians with the aid of an interpreter. In 1922 Mr. Varder gave up all outside work and devoted all of his time to the Lord’s service. He spent some time in tent work in Sakatchewan, living in the tent, cooking their own food and sleeping on straw, which was not too uncomfortable except when it rained. The end of that year the family moved to Minneapolis but Mr. Varder continued to visit Manitoba and Saskatchewan calling at points in Minnesota and North Dakota en route. Because the farming season was short in northern Canada and the farmers worked long hours in the summer, he usually went up there in the winter, facing storms, blizzards, and sometimes very severe temperatures. He was often gone seven or eight months at a stretch, and while he was always glad to get home, yet after a month or two of local helpfulness he would become restless. In 1928 the Varder family moved to Chicago and in 1932, when seventy-four years of age, Mr. Varder made his last trip north where he spent a hard winter in northern Saskatchewan. In September, 1933, while ministering among coloured Christians in Cleveland, he suffered a stroke and passed away. Notes for Richard Ferris Varder: General Notes: The story of the life of Richard F.
