PROGRAM OF RESEARCH

My research area is patient safety and quality of care for adults, with a focus on fall prevention and patient engagement towards self-care as well as their association with patient-centered outcomes. I have used both quantitative and qualitative research designs to address patient safety issues in clinical settings (e.g., using big data, archived hospital data, interviews, or surveys for analysis). Since 2006, my scholarly activities have emphasized hospital-acquired injurious falls, a nursing-sensitive outcome indicator. My fall prevention research centers on understanding factors that contribute to falls and testing patient-centered interventions (e.g., web-based solutions) for preventing falls of adult patients in hospital settings. To inform future development of patient-centered solutions, I have incorporated the concept of patient engagement into my research. For example, I have begun to examine the important and desirable patient engagement actions for self-care as perceived by patients; this line of work has complemented my research on patient safety and quality of care for adults.

Research areas and interests • Patient safety and quality of care: e.g., patient falls, pressure ulcers, patient experiences, infection control, newly emerging infectious diseases, religions and cultures, informatics, health policy, history of Chinese medicine (84 journal articles; 61 of these were published in SCI/SSCI journals; 45 of them on inpatient falls in refereed professional journals; one professional book, entitled “Patient unit safety and care quality: Promotion of self-healing systems during hospital stays”)

• Patient engagement and adults’ self-care needs (4 journal articles; 4 of these were published in SCI/SSCI journals)

• Human resource management and leadership: e.g., the relationship between human resource management and care quality, ethics, occupational hazards, resource allocation, family involvement in inpatient care, higher education administration (34 journal articles; Huey-Ming Tzeng, PhD, RN, FAAN 8

18 of these were published in SCI/SSCI journals)

• Teaching and research methodology (8 journal articles; 6 of these were published in SCI/SSCI journals)

(Role: PI) USponsor: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Rockville, MD, U.S.A. $100,000 USD (Tzeng: 10–15% effort) This study examined the unique contribution of call light response time in predicting: 1) total fall rates, 2) injurious fall rates, and 3) patients’ perceptions toward call light responsiveness. Three hypotheses were tested: H1) Call light response time will contribute significantly to predicting fall rates. H2) Call light response time will contribute significantly to predicting injurious fall rates. H3) Call light response time will contribute significantly to predicting patients’ perceptions toward call light responsiveness. To achieve the aims, we collaborated with four Michigan hospitals.
