FOREWORD ASTEL IS IN ESSENCE powdered colour rubbed into paper without a liquid vehicle – a process succinctly described in 1760 by the French amateur engraver Claude-Henri Watelet (himself the subject of a portrait by La Tour): P Les crayons mis en poudre imitent les couleurs, Que dans un teint parfait offre l’éclat des fleurs. Sans pinceau le doigt seul place et fond chaque teinte; Le duvet du papier en conserve l’empreinte; Un crystal la défend; ainsi, de la beauté Le Pastel a l’éclat et la fragilité.1 It is at once line and colour – a sort of synthesis of the traditional opposition that had been debated vigorously by theoreticians such as Roger de Piles in the previous century. -

Yet also pride: Neel has positioned herself rather regally on an upholstered chair, Julia Dabbs is Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Minnesota, Morris. Her research has focused on the translation and analysis of art historical documents of the early-modern period of Europe (i.e., 1500–1800). This interest began with a dissertation on the art and theory of the seventeenth-century French sculptor Michel Anguier, about whom she has published in the Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes (2002). Since then her attention has turned to life stories of European and American women artists, leading to articles published in Aurora (2005) and Eighteenth-Century Women (2008). Dabbs is also the author of Life Stories of Women Artists, 1550–1800: An Anthology (2009), which includes translations and analyses of key biographical documents for forty-six early-modern women artists. Inspired by the University of Toronto conference “Aging, Old Age, Memory, Aesthetics,” held on March 25– 27, 2011, she is currently working on a book tentatively titled Sibyls of Sight: Old Age and the Woman Artist in the Early Modern Period. -

FREDERICK THE GREAT‟S PORCELAIN DIVERSION: THE CHINESE TEA HOUSE AT SANSSOUCI Tania Solweig Shamy Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal October 2009 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of doctor of philosophy. ©Tania Solweig Shamy 2009 Abstract This thesis signals a new approach in the study of the Chinese Tea House at Sanssouci. It argues that Frederick the Great‟s exotic pavilion, although made of sandstone and stucco, is porcelain in essence. The garden building reflects the many meanings of this highly valued commodity and art form in the privileged society of the king and his contemporaries. The pavilion is unique in that it was inspired by the type of sculptural ornament designed to decorate the eighteenth- century table of the nobility. The Tea House is a thematically integrated structure that demonstrates the influence of porcelain on interior décor and architecture. The designation of the garden building as a Gesamtkunstwerk acknowledges the blending of architecture, painting, and sculpture; characteristics shared by porcelain centerpieces. They exemplify the intermediality associated with the development of eighteenth- century porcelain and the interpretation of Frederick‟s pavilion. ii Résumé Cette thèse annonce une approche nouvelle dans l‟étude de la Maison de Thé Chinoise à Sans-Souci. -
