The Birth of Sandman
The Birth of Sandman Christoph Ammann Doug Bloom∗ Jonathan M. Cohen John Courte Lucio Flores Sho Hasegawa Nikos Kalaitzidis Terrance Tornberg Laurence Treweek Bob Winter Chris Yang Sony Pictures Imageworks 1 Introduction The Birth of Sandman sequence in Spider-Man 3 involved creating a human-sized character who emerges from a pile of sand in full view under a well-lit environment. The scale of the shot ranges from macro close up views of single sand grains to distant views of the entire sand pile as Sandman emerges. The sequence begins with a fully CG 2,672-frame shot that slowly revolves around sand- man as he forms. The Imageworks Sand FX team had an enormous challenge of transferring character animation into a physically plau- sible animation of hundreds of millions of sand grains forming into a human form. To accomplish this task, we built a variety of simulation engines and Figure 2: Sandman's hand collapses. This shot was fully CG. developed techniques for driving the simulations from character an- c Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. All rights reserved. imation. We used everything from a Houdini DOPs simulation of sand grains settling for the extreme close-ups, to a surface-based 1b). During this erosion process, we simulated collision with solid relaxation algorithm derived from [Onoue and Nishita 2003], to a parts of Sandman's body. This heightfield-based system was highly grain-grain simulator similar to [Bell et al. 2005]. Our rendering efficient, able to process the entire 2,672-frame shot in under 30 system was based on RenderMan and included a continuous level- minutes. -

1 only A Stranger Arrives The air was dry and cold near the small town of Puente Antiguo, New Mexico. Darcy Lewis sat in the driver’s seatReview of an old van full of expensive scientic equipment. She was a college student working with scientist Jane Foster. Another scientist, ForDr. Erik Selvig, sat in the passenger seat. In the back of the van, Jane- opened the roof and climbed onto it. Selvig followed her, and they looked up into the darkness. “So what exactly are we looking for?” Selvig asked. He was a friend of Jane’s father and knew her well. “Why did you ask me to join you here in New Mexico?” “I told youSample. Something strange is happening in the night sky and I need your help,” Jane replied. “It’s a little dierent each time. Once it was a pool of stars in a corner of the sky. But last week it was a rainbow—” A noise from her computer stopped her. “Wait for it!” she said excitedly. Nothing happened. The sky above them stayed calm and black. Darcy put her head out of the window and looked up at Jane. “Can I turn on the radio?” she asked. She sounded bored. “No!” Jane replied angrily. She and Selvig climbed back inside the van. “I don’t understand,” she said. She opened a small book and looked at her notes. She always carried this notebook—inside it was her life’s work. How Uniform Was the Old Norse Religion?
II. Old Norse Myth and Society HOW UNIFORM WAS THE OLD NORSE RELIGION? Stefan Brink ne often gets the impression from handbooks on Old Norse culture and religion that the pagan religion that was supposed to have been in Oexistence all over pre-Christian Scandinavia and Iceland was rather homogeneous. Due to the lack of written sources, it becomes difficult to say whether the ‘religion’ — or rather mythology, eschatology, and cult practice, which medieval sources refer to as forn siðr (‘ancient custom’) — changed over time. For obvious reasons, it is very difficult to identify a ‘pure’ Old Norse religion, uncorroded by Christianity since Scandinavia did not exist in a cultural vacuum.1 What we read in the handbooks is based almost entirely on Snorri Sturluson’s representation and interpretation in his Edda of the pre-Christian religion of Iceland, together with the ambiguous mythical and eschatological world we find represented in the Poetic Edda and in the filtered form Saxo Grammaticus presents in his Gesta Danorum. This stance is more or less presented without reflection in early scholarship, but the bias of the foundation is more readily acknowledged in more recent works.2 In the textual sources we find a considerable pantheon of gods and goddesses — Þórr, Óðinn, Freyr, Baldr, Loki, Njo3rðr, Týr, Heimdallr, Ullr, Bragi, Freyja, Frigg, Gefjon, Iðunn, et cetera — and euhemerized stories of how the gods acted and were characterized as individuals and as a collective. Since the sources are Old Icelandic (Saxo’s work appears to have been built on the same sources) one might assume that this religious world was purely Old 1 See the discussion in Gro Steinsland, Norrøn religion: Myter, riter, samfunn (Oslo: Pax, 2005). -

Rune Warriors: Shield of Odin James Jennewein & Tom S. Parker Reviewed by: Enzo Takagi, 16 Star Teen Book Reviewer of Be the Star You Are! Charity www.bethestaryouare.org This book was very entertaining and funny. I would recommend it for mostly boys because it contains flatulence jokes and other humor along those lines. There is also reference to alcohol consumption and much violence. This book is recommended either as a gift or a book to be borrowed from the library. I liked the humor and the plentiful action a lot, and there were interesting references to Vikings and Norse mythology. The protagonist is Dane, a young man who has recently gone on his first hunt, a rite of passage. The very beginning of the book is about Dane growing up and the influences on his, as well as the love and care given to him. However, the story takes a turn after that. There is an evil king named Thidrek who likes to execute people and rule them by fear. He obviously is not liked by his people, and everyone is afraid of him. In Dane's village, there is an annual competition for Viking sports like axe throwing and archery. One year, Thidrek comes to this celebration and humiliates Dane's father and the rest of the village as well. Then things get worse. Dane's girlfriend, Astrid is kidnapped by Thidrek, and his village is razed to the ground and many people are killed. Dane's father is killed, and the Shield of Odin is stolen. This shield is given from Odin, the Norse god of tactics, and this shield blocks all attacks to the holder. -

GIANTS and GIANTESSES a Study in Norse Mythology and Belief by Lotte Motz - Hunter College, N.Y
GIANTS AND GIANTESSES A study in Norse mythology and belief by Lotte Motz - Hunter College, N.Y. The family of giants plays apart of great importance in North Germanic mythology, as this is presented in the 'Eddas'. The phy sical environment as weIl as the race of gods and men owe their existence ultimately to the giants, for the world was shaped from a giant's body and the gods, who in turn created men, had de scended from the mighty creatures. The energy and efforts of the ruling gods center on their battles with trolls and giants; yet even so the world will ultimately perish through the giants' kindling of a deadly blaze. In the narratives which are concerned with human heroes trolls and giants enter, shape, and direct, more than other superhuman forces, the life of the protagonist. The mountains, rivers, or valleys of Iceland and Scandinavia are often designated with a giant's name, and royal houses, famous heroes, as weIl as leading families among the Icelandic settlers trace their origin to a giant or a giantess. The significance of the race of giants further is affirmed by the recor ding and the presence of several hundred giant-names in the Ice landic texts. It is not surprising that students of Germanic mythology and religion have probed the nature of the superhuman family. Thus giants were considered to be the representatives of untamed na ture1, the forces of sterility and death, the destructive powers of 1.
