This thesis suggests that visual style in a video game shapes players’ gaming experience in terms of three salient dimensions: narrative pleasure, ludic challenge, and aesthetic reward. The thesis first develops a context based on the fields of aesthetics, art history, visual psychology, narrative studies and new media studies. Next it builds an analytical framework with two visual styles categories containing six separate modes. This research uses examples drawn from 29 games to illustrate and to instantiate the categories and the modes. -

Marcel Stoetzler Durkheim’s and Simmel’sreactionstoantisemitism and their reflection in their views on modern society If one ever asked oneself what sociologyisall about, one could do worse than consulting Auguste Comte’s 1822 manifesto, Prospectus des travaux scientifiques nØcessaires pour rØorganiser la societØ,the Plan of the Scientific Works Necessary for the Reorganization of Society.1 It sketches out the historical-structural task that the new discipline,whose name Comte later popularized, was supposed to fulfil, namely to end-but-preserve—as the Germans would say, aufzuheben—the Revolution: safeguard its achievements from reaction as well as from further revolutions. Sociologywould do so by separating the good bits of modernity from the bad bits. The former Comte sawasgrounded in asecular,macro- historical trend of European historyand civilization, the latter in the undis- ciplined hubris of troublemakers led astraybymetaphysicalnonsense peddled by the Enlightenment, or more precisely,bythe non-positivistic strand of the Enlightenment.Sociologywould study and understand the laws of historyand silence the metaphysical troublemakers. Sociology’s commitmenttomaking thatmessy thing called societysafe for modernity(the industrial-capitalist world system of nation states constituted and populated by modernindividuals) remained tricky.Spanners were thrown into the machineryleft, right, and centrebypeople whowere not so positive about the positivestate of society. Rather ironically,most of those whocontinued and developed the Comtean projectofsociologydid so by basing it on some of those ghastly metaphysical ideas from the Enlightenment, notably those of Immanuel Kant. Sociology, at least in France and Germany, emerged mostly as a set of differing blends of positivism and Kantian, or neo-Kantian, idealism. -

Hornosty NUMBER OF PAGES: vi, 135 ii ABSTRACT This thesis is both an extension and a er i tique of Roy Hornosty's doctoral dissertation. In "Conceptions of Human Nature in the Sociological Tradition", Hornosty traces the development and career of two distinct concepts of human nature as they are reflected in sociological theory. Hornosty argues that sociology originally emerged with two competing ideas of man, one stressing the logical priority of the individual, and the other, the predominance of the collective. In the course of his study, Hornosty discusses what he refers to as the second generation of European sociologists, comprised of Durkheim, Weber, Simmel and Pareto. Hornosty suggests that each theorist of this generation describes a conception of human nature based on an 'inner dialectic' between the individual, who seeks independent self-actualization, over and against the demands of the collective, which develops according to laws which are often in stark contrast to the dictates of individuality. One chapter of Hornosty's study is devoted to Georg Simmel's sociological thought. -

In this paper, I suggest an alternative view that relationalism is only one theoretical perspective in network analysis. Relationalism, as currently defined, rejects essentialism, a priori categories, and insists upon the intersubjectivity of experience and meaning, as well as the importance of the content of interactions and their historical setting. Formalism is based on a structuralist interpretation of the theoretical works of Georg Simmel. Simmel based his theory on a Neo-Kantian program of identifying a priori categories of relational types and patterns that operate independently of cultural content or historical setting. Formalism and relationalism are therefore entirely distinct from each other. Yet both are internally consistent theoretical perspectives. The contrast between the two plays out in their approaches to culture, meaning, agency, and generalizability. In this paper, I distinguish the two theoretical strains. 2 Since its inception in the 1930s, social network research has become an increasingly vibrant part of sociology inquiry. The field has grown tremendously over the last few decades: new journals and conferences have been created, programs and concentrations in social network analysis have been created in institutions in both North America and Europe, and large numbers of scholars have been attracted to the field from across a wide disciplinary array, including sociology, anthropology, management sciences, computer science, biology, mathematics, and physics. -

Some Aspects of the Philosophy of Science in Japan By Hiroshi NAGAI I Philosophy in its strict sense had not been in Japan until her mod ern age, which broke out at Meiji Revolution about one hundred years ago. It must be remembered that the proper notion of philosophy has its historical origin in ancient Greece and that its development is performed on the basis of Greek tradition in Western Europe. From this point of view we Japanese have been in quite different circum stances from those of European peoples, whose philosophies, I presume, for all varieties in their character and trend, are united in a common mental circle, so that they are on intimate terms with one another. Of course, as generally recognized, it is an irresistibly clear fact that Buddhism and Confucianism had influenced intrinsically on the mental life of Japanese people for a long time, but their doctrines may not be called philosophic in the proper sense. We prefer to consider them respectively a sort of religious speculation or peculiar worldly Wisdom rather than as philosophy. This state of affairs will be said to be due to the special historical and geographical conditions in which our country was so long situated that we could hardly take any chance of international contact with European peoples and their philosophical thoughts. As the leading and decisive one of those conditions we can especially point out the political and social influences of the feudal -63- 64 government, which was established by the Tokugawas and lasted for almost three hundred years; its political absolutism strictly prohibited our countrymen living in four small islands from taking foreign informations. -

Thate Received: 17 April 2016; Accepted: 14 June 2016; Published: 23 June 2016 Abstract: This article initiates an inquiry into the sources and frameworks of value used to denote human subjects in modernity. In particular, I consider the conflation of monetary, legal, and theological registers employed to demarcate human worth. Drawing on Simmel’s speculative genealogy of the money equivalent of human values, I consider the spectrum of ascriptions from specifically quantified to infinite human value. I suggest that predications of infinite human value require and imply quantified—and specifically monetary-economic—human value. Cost and worth, economically and legally defined, provide a foundation for subsequent eternal projections in a theological imaginary. This calls into question the interventionist potential of claims to infinite or unquantifiable human value as resistance to the contemporary financialization of human life and society. Introduction The question of human value—its sources and justifications—and the practice of pricing human life remain a challenge to moral and theoretical discourse in the West. They also persist as sources of cognitive dissonance for social practice. Voices from across the political spectrum decry the bald or naked economization of human value. Even most defenders of free-market logic and rational choice shy away from full-throated claims for a straightforward pricing of human life. -

Premonitions between Prophecy and Pathology, 1750 to 1850 Tomasz Kurianowicz My dissertation The Unknown Future examines the notion of Ahnung or Ahndung (in English: premonition) in German literature, philosophy, anthropology, and the sciences around 1800. Focusing on the heated debates among philosophers, writers and intellectuals as to whether humans can attain knowledge about the future, I trace the notion of Ahnung as it traverses various discourses. In doing so, I draw on Stephen Greenblatt’s idea of a new historicism and expand studies written by Stefan Andriopoulos, Joseph Vogl, Eva Horn, Michael Gamper and other scholars, explicitly referring to and expanding the literary theory concerning “poetologies of knowledge.“ Specifically I show how after 1750 religious models of prophecy were no longer easily accepted. At the same time, new statistical and mathematical models of prognosis were rising -- even as doubts remained about their ability to fully grasp the progression of time. Within these conflicts between traditional religious models and the new exact sciences, the concept of ‘premonition’ seemed to offer various thinkers and writers evidence for a prognostic capability of the soul that challenged rational, mathematical and statistical models of probability as the sole means for predicting the future. The hope was that premonitions could provide a supersensory knowledge based on fleeting, opaque glimpses into the progression of time. -
Populist Zeitgeist
Cas Mudde1 The Populist Zeitgeist Populism seems to become stronger the more intellectuals criticize it.2 SINCE THE 1980S THE RISE OF SO-CALLED ‘POPULIST PARTIES’ HAS GIVEN rise to thousands of books, articles, columns and editorials. Most of them are of an alarming nature, as these ‘new populists’ are gener- ally seen as a threat to liberal democracy. Though authors are not always sure what exactly characterizes these parties, they do agree that parties like the Austrian Freedom Party (FPÖ), the French National Front (FN), or the Dutch List Pim Fortuyn (LPF) are ‘pop- ulist’. Another point on which most commentators agree is that ‘populism is understood as a pathological form, pseudo- and post- democratic, produced by the corruption of democratic ideals.’3 German scholars in particular consider right-wing populists, in line with the theory of Erwin K.
