State University of New York College at Cortland Student Government Gets A New President

Junior Jamie Piperato has been named the new president of SGA

By Dan Harding Jr. Editor-in-Chief

Jamie Piperato, Tara Vasi- lakopoulos and Brenna Filipello are set to become the newest Student Government President, Vice president and Treasurer re- spectively. They ran unopposed. For Piperato being named SGA president has been an ex- citing experience, but do not expect her to celebrate for too long. She is eager to start work- ing to accomplish her many goals she has already set for herself. A junior physical educa- tion major from Haverstraw, New York, she has been highly involved with several differ- ent aspects of campus life dur- ing her time at Cortland. A standout high school basketball player, Piperato played varsity basketball for Cortland for two years before reluctantly giving it up to pursue other passions. “When I played basketball here I loved every minute of it, but I felt it was time to ac- complish my other goals for my college career,” said Piper- ato. “It was then that I became an RA and got involved with resident life, multicultural life, and speaking to COR classes.” She would go on to become involved with SGA as a senator photo provided by Jamie Piperato See PRESIDENT , page 3 Newly elected Student Government President Jamie Piperato makes a speech at the Academic Convocation in August before her election Open House Brings Crowds Take The Power Back

VCU went from playing in the First Four, to playing in the Final Four by using hot three point shooting and a stingy defense. Along with a fiery young coach who isn’t afraid to dive on the floor, the Rams upset teams from five of the six power conferences to reach their first ever Final Four. Shaka Smart, the 33 year old head coach of the Rams, led his Rams to the Final Four in just his third year as a head coach. He joined Butler head coach Brad Stevens as the youngest to reach the Final Four. Speaking of Stevens, his Butler team made it back to the Final Four after an improbable run to last year’s championship game, losing to the hands of Duke. Butler survived a last second put back, a late foul fiasco, and an overtime to make it to Houston. Kemba Walker carried the UConn Huskies to the Final Four after cruising through the first rounds of the tournament.
