The Recipient of Confirmation . 314 INDEX 319 INTRODUCTION The justification of the sinner, with which we 1 have dealt in a previous treatise, is ordinarily not a purely internal and invisible process or series of acts, but requires the instrumentality of external visible signs instituted by Jesus Christ, which 2 3 either confer grace or augment it. Such visible means of grace are called Sacra ments. 4 The source and well-spring of all grace under the present dispensation is the Sacrifice of the Cross, from which redemptive power flows into the souls of men through the Sacraments and the Mass. This consideration led St. Thomas to re gard the Passion of Our Divine Saviour as the foundation-stone of the dogmatic treatise on the Sacraments. Following the example of the Tridentine Coun 5 cil, modern theologians are wont to introduce the treatise on the Sacraments with an explana tion of the nature, operation, and requisites of 6 Sacraments in general. Besides obviating the need of constant repetition, this introduction serves to show that the Sacraments are closely connected by a common bond and together consti tute an organic unit. The present volume contains, besides this gen eral introduction De Sacramentis in Genere, the special treatises on Baptism and Confirmation. The next volume will be devoted entirely to the Holy Eucharist, the following one to Penance, while a fourth will deal with Extreme Unction, Holy Orders, and Matrimony. Religious Institutes-Structures Under Canon Law I will be using the terms religious institute, religious order and reli- gious congregation interchangeably. There is a canonical distinction be- tween religious congregation and religious order; the former's members take simple vows, the latter's members take solemn vows, a distinction of importance in regard to the ownership of property which I will elaborate on shortly. Religious institute is the canonical term, religious order is fa- vored in civil law and by the IRS, and religious congregation and religious community are the more popular terms. A religious institute comes into existence when a group of Catholic Christians who choose to live a common life in service to God's people on behalf of the Church receive the Holy See's or a local bishop's approval.

Institutes of pontifical right are those erected or approved by the Holy See by formal decree. MOP was founded by Very Rev. Fr. Richard Ho Lung in 1981. It is an international monastic order of Brothers, Priests and Sister dedicated to "Joyful Service with Christ on the Cross" to serve the poorest of the poor. It has now grown to over 550 brothers from 13 countries serving the Lord in nine missions around the world. While Christianity promises salvation to all who accept it, different theories have developed as to how salvation is obtained or transmitted. Understandmg the problem of the sacraments as the means of salvation, therefore, is a crucial soteriological issue of considerable relevance to contemporary Christians. Furthermore, sacramental theology exerts considerable influence upon ecclesiology, particularb ecclesiasticalauthority. The purpose of this paper is to present the historical development of sacramental theology, lea- to the contemporary understanding of the sacraments within various Christian confessions; and to discuss the relationship between the sacraments and ecclesiastical authority, with special reference to the Roman Catholic Church and the churches of the Reformation. The Development of Rom Catholic Sacramental Tbeohgy The Early Church The orign of modem Roman Catholic sacramental theology developed in the earliest history of the Christian church. While the NT does not utilize the term "~acrament,~'some scholars speculate that the postapostolic church felt it necessary to bring Christianity into line with other rebons of the he,which utilized various "mysterious rites." The Archdiocese recognizes that these questions were not fully explored in the parties’ briefing on the motion to dismiss and that, due to the coronavirus, the Court was unable to address these issues at oral argument. Accordingly, the Archdiocese respectfully asks the Court to reconsider the ruling with the benefit of additional clarity on the key canon-law matters it has identified.     Spiritual Theology By JORDAN AUMANN, O.P. Preface The present volume was written in response to numerous requests for a complete and definitive work on Christian spirituality. It is not an entirely new work, however, for some sections are taken substantially from The Theology of Christian Perfection by Antonio Royo and Jordan Aumann, published in 1962 by Priory Press. Spiritual theology is both speculative and practical, but it is eminently practical because it deals with Christian life in relation to the perfection of charity. Consequently, the study of the theology of Christian perfection should proceed scientifically and systematically, although its aim is not to produce scholars but to form holy Christians. Therefore the first part of this volume investigates the theological principles of Christian holiness; the second part deduces from those principles the general directives by which souls can be guided in their journey to the goal of the Christian life. The theology contained in this volume is based on the spiritual doctrine of three Doctors of the Church: St. Thomas Aquinas, St. John of the Cross, and St. Teresa of Avila. Moreover, it is fully in accord with the teaching of John G. Arintero and Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange.     THE SACRAMENTS: A BRIDGE OR BARRIER TO REUNION? St. John's gospel, the mo t sacramental of the four, has been called a litur­ gical "Vademecum" for the faithful. Many sacramental themes in John are only now being appreciated because of a failure to read him as a Semite writing in the Semitic tradition which shaped its theology according to the symbols of saving history. But we scarcely need help from the exegetes to be aware that the Fourth Gospel places Christ's Last Discourse in a sacra­ mental, above all Eucharistic, setting. References to the Mission of the Paraclete and the Divine Indwelling, the Mystical Body explained in terms of the vine and branches, Christ's earnest prayer to the Father for the oneness of the disciples in Him as He is one in the Father, all are charged with the import of the Eucharistic Banquet which is here evaluated rather than described. Christ's Spirit The Protestant scholar, N eville Clark, has a caution perhaps as timely for Catholics as it is for Protestants when he deplores the contrast set up between Baptism as the Sacrament of the Spirit and the Eucharist as the Sacrament of Christ's reception. "To ignore either the Lord or the Spirit in the interpretation of the sacraments is, in the end, to deprive them of the fulness either of their personal, redemptive significance or their dy­ namic~ower. " 1 The sacraments are at once cosmic and personal, for Christ's humi nity, which was and is the instrument of salvation for all men, medi­ ates the imparting of the Spirit to the souls of individual men made one with Christ in the Spirit.

The Non expedit (you cannot) had, in fact, a strong influence and caused the detachment of the majority of Catholics from political life. Father Gemelli believed that, to make the University strong and lasting, it was absolutely necessary to have a spiritual institution including people at all levels (professors, assistant professors, technical and financial staff, public relations staff and even door-keepers) supporting its life and activities by all means. He thought of the possibility of a lay consecration to God in the world, with vows taken secretly by lay people. The initial problem was that this type of consecration was considered impossible and unimaginable at that time, as it did not exist in the canon law. He started, however, with the women’s Institute of “the Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ” originated within the Third Order as “a branch of the great and prolific Franciscan tree”. The first twelve “Franciscan Tertiaries of the Social Kingdom of the Sacred Heart” consecrated themselves to the Lord, in the little choir of the church of San Damiano in Assisi, on the nineteenth of November 1919. This was before the foundation of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart that took place in 1921. These early Missionaries, through their witness of consecrated life in the world, gave a great contribution to the official acknowledgement of this special vocation by the Church.

Closely associated with Catholic-Orthodox rapprochement in the latter half of the 20 th century was the emergence of the expression “sister churches” used in various ways across the confessional division. Patriarch Athenagoras first employed it in this context in a letter in 1962 to Cardinal Bea of the Vatican Secretariat for the Promotion of Christian Unity, and soon it had become standard currency in the bilateral dialogue. Yet today the expression is rarely invoked by Catholic or Orthodox officials in their ecclesial communications. As the Polish Catholic theologian Waclaw Hryniewicz was led to say in 2002, “This term…has now fallen into disgrace.” This dissertation traces the rise and fall of the expression “sister churches” in modern Catholic-Orthodox relations and argues for its rehabilitation as a means by which both Catholic West and Orthodox East may avoid certain ecclesiological imbalances toward which each respectively tends in its separation from the other. Catholics who oppose saying that the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church are sisters, or that the church of Rome is one among several patriarchal sister churches, generally fear that if either of those things were true, the unicity of the Church would be compromised and the Roman primacy rendered ineffective.
