About 200 works by these photographers have been selected by Edward Steichen, Director of the Museum1s Department of Photography. Henri Cartier-Bresson is represented entirely by his Asiatic photographs taken in China, Indonesia, Burma, India, Bali and Ceylon# Most of these are being exhibited for the first time anywhere, and only a very few have ever been published in this country. Brassai at 52 is the senior member of this group. Both he and Cartier-Bresson have exerted a considerable influence not only on French photography but on the best photography of all Europe. Work by both of these men has been published here in Harpers-Bazaar, and by Cartier-Bresson in Life magazine. Photographs by Robert Doisneau have appeared in Vogue. The work of Izis and Ronis is practically unknown in this country. Exoept for the Cartier-Bressons, all the photographs in the exhibition were taken in Paris or in the provinces of France. This exhibition is part of the Department of Photography^ plan to exhibit work by photographers of other countries and at a later date to include some of the new, younger photographers of France and other nations.

  • Ed Van Der Elsken Archives 1
ED VAN DER ELSKEN ARCHIVES 1 NOBUYOSHI ARAKI LOVE ON THE LEFT EYE In collaboration with Taka Ishii Gallery 06.09. - 18.10.2014 For the opening exhibition of Ed van der Elsken Archives, we are pleased to present Love on the Left Eye featuring work from Nobuyoshi Araki’s (1940, Tokyo, JP) publication of the same title alongside works from Ed van der Elsken’s Love on the Left Bank. Almost identically titled to the photography book that brought Van der Elsken to prominence, Love on the Left Eye can be seen as an homage to the Dutch pho- tographer as well as a return to Araki’s early inspirations. Araki made the photographs that form Love on the Left Nobuyoshi Araki, Love on the Left Eye, 2014 Eye, with the vision from his right eye obscured due to a retinal artery obstruction. Shot on slide film, Araki used black magic marker to block out the right side of each image, before printing the photographs. The images thus show Araki’s vision, both as an artist and as an individual confronted by his mortality (having recently also recovered from pros- tate cancer). Araki came into contact with Love on the Left Bank in his twenties and took photo- graphs of women in poses inspired by the ones found in Van der Elsken’s book. At this late stage in his career and facing the prospect of loosing all sight from his right eye, we thus find Araki go- ing back to his early influences. “Death comes towards us all, you know,” he says.

For Immediate Release Ed van der Elsken “Love” & Other Stories Howard Greenberg Gallery March 22 – May 5, 2018 Vali Myers in Saint Germain des Pres, Paris, 1951 Gelatin silver print; printed c.1980 Image size: 10 1/4 x 10 3/8 inches Paper size: 14 x 11 inches NEW YORK – An exhibition of work by Ed van der Elsken, known as the “enfant terrible” of Dutch photography, will be on view at Howard Greenberg Gallery from March 22 through May 5, 2018. “Love” & Other Stories will focus on the celebrated street photographer’s work from the 1950s and 60s documenting the social culture around him in Amsterdam, Paris, and Tokyo. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 22, from 6-8 p.m. With a confident, gritty, and unconventional style, van der Elsken’s confrontational portraits of young love, alienation, and counterculture bohemian life paved the way for late 20th century photographers such as Larry Clark, Nan Goldin, and Wolfgang Tillmans. He is best known for his iconic photography book, Love on the Left Bank, 1954, acclaimed for expanding the boundaries of documentary photography. His work was most recently seen last year in a retrospective exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, which traveled to the Jeu de Paume in Paris and the Fundación Mapfre in Madrid. Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) was “a man who would have liked to have transplanted a camera into his head to permanently record the world around him” noted Beatrix Ruf, the director of the Stedelijk Museum and Marta Gili, the director of the Jeu de Paume wrote in his retrospective exhibition catalogue.

His first book of colour photographs, EYE LOVE YOU, was published in 1977. As part of its mission both to preserve and to showcase the photographic heritage of the Netherlands, the Nederlands Fotomuseum is now aiming to make this aspect of Van der Elsken’s oeuvre better known to the general public.

  • Press Release
THE BAKERY ED VAN DER ELSKEN SIDEWALKS March 10 – April 14, 2018 After the success of the extensive retrospective held at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 2017, that travelled to the Jeu de Paume in Paris and is now on at Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid, we are proud to present a special selection of street life colour Ed van der Elsken, Chile, 1971, Nederlands Fotomuseum / © Ed van der Elsken photographs by Ed Van der Elsken. For over 40 years, Ed Van der Elsken captured life as he saw it through photography and film. Documenting the streets around him, he wandered through cities like Paris, Amsterdam, Hong Kong and Tokyo seeking out colourful personalities, head-turning young women and wayward youth. Being both the influencer and the influencee of the time and place he found himself in, he developed a bold, unconventional and personal style. Van der Elsken’s presence resonates throughout his work: he was a master of making a personal connection with the people he photographed. His approach was confrontational, embracing the bright as well as the darker sides of human life. The unconventional technique and the gritty snapshot-like quality of his work have been of great importance in the development of contemporary photography. Within the collection on view in the Bakery, we can follow the curiosity of the artist capturing moments from the vibrant life around him. Sidewalks compose the net of the public and therefore social space we live in, yet they are a transit space that pass unrecognized. The energy and freshness springing from these images highlight one of Ed van der Elsken’s main talents: unveiling the unnoticed.

  • The History of Photography: the Research Library of the Mack Lee
THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.
