She wanted to read about girls, yet all the books about girls we could find were twee and dull. My daughter is happy to read about a princess, along as she is a Ninja Princess; happy to save rainbows, as long as it involves a good sword fight or perhaps a well-planned heist. After a few months of this, my lovely daughter stopped reading. We tried most of the “first chapter books” that people recommend; all met with disinterest. So I asked her exactly what she wanted in a “proper book”. After much though, she wrote down: “Dragons, princess, zombies, vampires, ghosts, but not spiders and it should be funny and scary and have fighting in it.” We couldn’t find such a book with concepts and vocabulary suitable for a six year old – so I wrote one. I had written novels before, but not a children’s book, so I had help from my daughter to find the right level.

The dedicated round highlights the contribution multicultural communities have made to the game’s history and welcomes new communities to embrace Australian Football as fans, players, umpires and administrators. Across Victoria, there are a number of fantastic multicultural and indigenous programs which continue to bring people from all backgrounds and walks of life together. Programs including Laguntas, Kickstart, Multicultural School Programs, Towards Zero Diversity Squads and the All Nations high-performance team are enabling young talent to be identified and have access to more opportunities to become the next crop of AFL stars. One way AFL Victoria is connecting these programs to the talent pathway is via our VFL Multicultural Ambassadors, who are assisting with these participation opportunities in the community.     Community Umpiring Round VFL Round 6 TAC Cup Round 7 13 - 15 May 2016 $3.00 Photo: Brian Bartlett Umpire recognition as important as ever Football leagues around Victoria will celebrate Community Umpiring Round this weekend. Respect and appreciation for umpires should not just be recognised one round per season, but should be done every week. They do a great job controlling a game where the skill and speed continually increases, as do the demands on umpires. Just like footballers, umpires are dedicated athletes whose preparation and passion for the game is unwavering. And, just like footballers, AFL Victoria strives to provide a clearly defined pathway for umpires to progress their participation to the highest level. Since 2013 there has been 15 umpires promoted to the AFL – five field, six boundary and four goal umpires. That means that of the 32 AFL field umpires, 19 are Victorian (60 per cent), while close to 50 per cent of the 101 umpires on the 2016 AFL lists are also from our state. This is a great reflection of the hard work of our umpiring department, led by State league Umpiring Head Coach Cameron Nash. As Cameron speaks about in this edition of the Record, a key focus over the last 18 months has been bridging the gap between community and state league umpiring. The introduction of rookie squads has enabled promising local umpires to experience what it takes to reach the next level, exposed to the training standards and preparation needed to take the next step in their umpiring career. Another positive aspect is the increase in our female umpiring numbers, with seven female umpires (three field, one boundary, three goal) now part of our squad.

The Top 25 players from the 25-year history of the TAC Cup competition were revealed, with Chris Judd, Gary Ablett Jnr, Patrick Dangerfield and Adam Goodes just a few of the names selected as part of the star-studded list. It is amazing to think that each of these players developed their skills within Victoria’s premier U18 competition. Credit must go to the junior clubs, coaches and staff within the TAC Cup regions for the role they have played in helping produce not only these 25 players, but the long list of over 1,000 AFL draft ees that the pathway played a role in nurturing. We look forward to discovering who will be named No.1 from the list next Sunday (September 4) at the Morrish Medal vote count. In an historic occasion last weekend, we recognised the first senior woman in Victoria to kick 100 goals in a season. St Kilda Shark and Collingwood marquee player Moana Hope recorded the milestone in the final round of the Swisse VFL Women’s season, with the achievement celebrated with family members performing a haka on the field – surely a first for a 100-goal celebration.

Watching the match live to air, coldie in hand, in the comfort of the lounge room at Coffs Harbour with Merlin and Sugar, what more could a chap ask for?? Well, something less than 40 degrees C would have helped! The W-Dees were proudly led out by “Drives Herself” (Daisy Pearce) and didn’t the girls look up and about!! With “Aunty Reg” (Mel Hickey) sporting a nice little shiner, the girls looked like right little warriors. But Pies Captain Steph Chiocci had other ideas - she was on fire. Our Girls struggled to get the ball past the centreline in the first half. “Jaws” Mia-Rae Clifford had her hands full against the much bigger bodied Mo Hope. Hate to say it, but It was great to see Mo Hope get the Monkey off her back with a handy little goal, and she looked like she might be up for a bag full. The Pies didn’t factor in “Schoolie” Katherine Smith stepping up to the plate and helping to keep Mo quiet for the rest of the match. “The Big Bad Bean Counter” Elise O’Dea was in everything, muscling the Pies out the way and giving the half forwards a chance to launch an attack. “Up Early” (Shelley Scott) was a real find at Half Back, and with “Paddy” (Laura Duryea) giving no quarter, “Drives Herself” was able to get about the ground and create some mayhem of her own.

While the finalists in the TAC Cup and VFL Women’s have been known for a number of weeks, the week one finals’ opponents will be decided by results this weekend. The minor premiership will be fought out between Geelong Falcons and Dandenong Stingrays in our U18 competition, while the Sandringham Dragons will aim to break the country-region monopoly of the top four by earning the double-chance in the final weekend of the season. In a change this year, the top eight teams in the TAC Cup will earn a well-deserved break, as the bottom four sides go head to head next weekend at Ikon Park, with players given one more chance to impress recruiters for 2016. VFL fans are encouraged to arrive early to the Werribee vs Footscray clash to view a VFL Women’s final preview, as top-placed Darebin faces second side Melbourne Uni. While the Falcons have secured the minor premiership with an unblemished season to date, Uni needs to win to finish in second spot with the St Kilda Sharks ready to steal their position. The Sharks will be hoping to help full forward Moana Hope to her 100th goal of the season, with the Collingwood marquee player needing just one major to create history in the inaugural VFL Women’s season.
