DIVYA DESAMs – 21 TO 30 DIVYA DESAMs - 21/108 - Thirunandhipura Vinnagaram Name of the Divya Desam : Jagannatha Perumal temple Location : Nathan Koil, Kumbakonam Taluk, Thanjavur Dist Moolavar (Presiding Deity) : Sri Jagannathar Thayaar (Consort) : Shenbagavalli Thayar Thirukkolam (Posture) : Veetrirundha (Sitting) Thirumugam (Facing) : West Mangalasasanam (Hymns sung by) : Thirumangai Azhwar Sthalapurana (Brief History) : Contd..2 -2- As per legend, Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva, did not respect the Dwarapalakas (the gatekeepers of Maha Vishnu in Vaikuntam). They cursed Nandi that his body would suffer oppressive heat. Nandi prayed to Lord Shiva, who advised him to do penance in Shenbaranyam. It is the place where Mahalakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu was doing penance to be in His chest. Vishnu was impressed by the penance of Nandi and got his curse relieved. Maha Vishnu also took Mahalakshmi in his chest. As per another legend, once Lord Indra took the form of a hunter and Lord Agni transformed himself as a pigeon. The hunter aimed an arrow at the pigeon and shot, the bird fell before King Sibhi and sought his help. King Sibhi, known for his generosity and kindness towards all living beings, offered his own flesh equivalent to that of the pigeon to the hunter. To measure the above, King Sibhi sat on the west plate of the Balance while the pigeon sat on the east. To see this noble event of sacrifice, Lord Narayana (originally facing East) turned to face West here. The Lord blessed eternity to King Sibhi. About the temple: An unique feature of this temple is that the Nandi vigraha (idol) which is otherwise part of Shiva temples, is in the main sanctum. Since Nandi got relieved of his curse here, the temple tank is called Nandi Theertham, the place is called Nandipuram and other water body as Nandi Pushkarani. This temple is also known as Dakshina Jaganatham (Jagannatha temple of South). �Proud to be a Hindu����� DIVYA DESAMs - 22/108 - Thiruvelliyankudi Name of the Divya Desam : Kolavalvilraman Swamy temple Location : Thiruvelliyankudi, Palakudi post, Thanjavur Dist Moolavar (Presiding Deity) : Sri Kolavalvilraman Thayaar (Consort) : Maragadhavalli Thayar Thirukkolam (Posture) : Sayanam(Reclining) Thirumugam (Facing) : East Mangalasasanam (Hymns sung by) : Thirumangai Azhwar Sthalapurana (Brief History) : Contd..2 -2- As per legend Sukrachariyar, the demon guru, was against king Mahabali donating land to Vishnu who had come in the form of a Brahmin. As per the ritual Mahabali, to confirm his donation, orally declared and was to pour water from a Kamadalam (small kettle) three times. To stop the donation, Sukrachariyar became a small insect, went into the kettle and blocked the mouth of the kettle. Lord Vishnu with small grass pierced the mouth of the kettle. Sukrachariyar as an insect lost his eye sight and fell from the kettle. Then the donation was offered and finally Mahabali was destroyed by Lord Vishnu as Vamanan. Later Sukrachariyar came here to Thiruvelliyangudi, prayed to Maha Vishnu by doing penance and got back his eyesight. Since Sukrachariyar (also known as "Velli" - Venus), did penance at this place it is called Thiruvelliyangudi and is being worshipped as Sree Vaishnava Shukra Dhosha Sthalam. As per another legend once the architects of Devaloga, Viswakarma and Mayan had an argument on whose skill was superior. Lord Brahma informed Mayan that Viswakarma attained betterment as he built Vaikunta, the abode of Vishnu on account of accomplishments in his previous birth. He also informed Mayan that to attain similar status, he has to identify and build an abode near river Kaveri similar to Vaikunta. Mayan inspected various places and finally identified Thiruvelliyangudi, where sage Markendeya was doing penance and built this temple. He prayed to Sri Rama to give Dharshan without his Sangu(Conch) and Chakaram(Discus). Lord gave those to Sri Garudan and appeared as "Kolavalvilraman" at this place. Contd..3 -3- About the temple: As per legend, the temple was called Brahma Putram in Krita Yuga, Parasaram in Tretha Yuga, Sainthiranagaram in Dwapara Yuga and Bhargavapuram in Kali Yuga. It is believed the light by which Sukrachariyar got back his eye sight is still glowing at the temple as a lamp called Nethra Deepam. This is the only temple in the world where Sri Garudan is seen in the rising posture, holding Sangu and Chakram. He is worshipped as Chathurbuja Garudan (Chathurbuja means Four Hands ). �Proud to be a Hindu����� DIVYA DESAMs - 23/108 - Thiruvazhundur Name of the Divya Desam : Sri Aamaruviappan temple Location : Therazhundur, Mayiladuthurai circle, Nagapattinam Dist Moolavar (Presiding Deity) : Sri Devaadhi Rajan / Sri Aamaruviappan Thayaar (Consort) : Senkamalavalli Thirukkolam (Posture) : Nindra (Standing) Thirumugam (Facing) : East Mangalasasanam (Hymns sung by) : Thirumangai Azhwar Sthalapurana (Brief History) : As per legend King Uparisaravasu, a student of Devaguru Bhragaspathi, got a chariot which floats in the sky from Lord Indra. Once on a dispute between the Rishis and Devas, he favoured the Deva's side and settled it. The Rishis got angry and cursed the king that his chariot would not fly in the sky. Contd..2 -2- As an effect of the curse, his chariot fell down in this place and got stuck. Hence this place is called as Therazhunthur ('Ther' means Chariot pushed down). Lord Narayana sent Sri Garudan and helped him to fly back. As Lord helped the king who was loved by the Deva's, He is called as Devaadiraja Perumal. As per another legend, Lord Brahma, drove away the cattle belonging to Sri Krishna. Krishna created another herd in the meanwhile. Realising that the herd belonged to Sri Krishna, Brahma apologized and wished Bhagavan to set his abode at this place. Since the Lord appeared for the cattle and settled here, the deity is called Aamaruviappan (the one who is flanked by cattle). As per yet another legend, Bhakth Prahalad, an ardent devotee of Vishnu feared Narasimha, the avatar that killed Hiranya, the demon father of Prahalad. Amaruviappan appeared to have consoled Prahalad. There is another belief that river Kaveri was blessed by Sri Amaruviappan to relieve herself off the curse by sage Agastya. About the temple: Sri Devaadirajan is in standing posture having Sri Garudan to his left and Prahlatha maharaj along with Markanteya Maharishi to his right. He has Gadhayudham (mace) in his left hand. River Cauvery too is seen kneeling at his lotus feet. �Proud to be a Hindu����� DIVYA DESAMs - 24/108 - Thirusirupuliyur Name of the Divya Desam : Kripasamudra Perumal temple Location : Sirupuliyur, Nannilam circle, Thiruvarur Dist Moolavar (Presiding Deity) : Sri Kripasamudra Perumal Thayaar (Consort) : Thirumamagal Nachiyar Thirukkolam (Posture) : Sayanam(Reclining) Thirumugam (Facing) : South Mangalasasanam (Hymns sung by) : Thirumangai Azhwar Sthalapurana (Brief History) : Contd..2 -2- As per legend Sage Vyaghrapada desired to attain salvation, as advised by Lord Shiva did penance here and prayed to Lord Vishnu to get a place in the Lord's abode - Vaikundam. Lord Perumal appeared to the sage and blessed him in a smaller form known as Bala Sayanam (smaller recline), the sleeping posture of a small kid. Being in a smaller form and since Sage Vyaghrapada had features of a tiger, this place is called Siru (meaning small) Puli(meaning tiger) yur (meaning dwelling place) - Thiru Sirupuliyur. As per another legend, a bitter enmity existed in the past between Garuda and serpent Adisesha. The latter came to this place and worshipped the Lord, to end the enmity between them. Lord granted darshan to the divine serpent and took him as His bed – Anantha Sayanam. About the temple: Sage Vyakrapada and Sage Patanjali, devotees of Lord Nataraja are in the sanctum sanctorum with Lord Perumal. There is also a separate shrine for divine serpent Adisesha here. �Proud to be a Hindu����� DIVYA DESAMs - 25/108 - Thalaichangadu / Thiru Thalaichanga Naanmadhiyam Name of the Divya Desam : Naanmadhiya Perumal temple Location : Thalaichangadu, Tharangambadii circle, Nagapattinam Dist. Moolavar (Presiding Deity) : Sri Naanmadhiya Perumal/ Sri Chandrasaabha harar Thayaar (Consort) : Thalaichanga Nachiyar Thirukkolam (Posture) : Nindra (Standing) Thirumugam (Facing) : East Mangalasasanam (Hymns sung by) : Thirumangai Azhwar Sthalapurana (Brief History) : As per legend, Lord Chandran (Moon) had to suffer double curse for his wrong deeds. He surrendered at the feet of Lord Vishnu for relief. Perumal advised Chandran to visit Srirangam, Thiru Indalur and Thalaichanga Naanmadhiyam, have a dip in the sacred springs there and perform penance for relief. Chandran meticulously followed Lord’s advice and got the relief at this place - Thalaichanga Naanmadhiyam. As the Lord relieved the curse of Chandran, He is called "Chandra Saabha Harar". Contd..2 -2- About the temple: As once the very best Sangu (sea shell) were sold here, this place is called Thalai sangam (place of best shells). Also this place was full of forest (Kaadu), hence this place was known as Thalai sangam + Kaadu, Thalaichangadu. Lord Shiva wears the cresent moon as his head ornament. As like Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu too has cresent moon at this place. After returning from Badrinath, Adiyen also visited Tirumala-Tirupati and participated in Vimsathi darshanam a scheme which allows a family of 6 members to have Suprabatham, Nijapada and SahasraDeepalankara seva for any 2 consecutive days in a year . It was only due to the abundant grace of Thiruvengadamudaiyan adiyen was able to vist all the Divya desams without any difficulty. Before proceeding further, Adiyen would like to thank all the internet bhagavathas especially Sri Rangasri group members and M.S.Ramesh for providing abundant information about these divya desams. I have uploaded a Map of the hills again downloaded from UP Tourism site for ready reference . As Adiyen had not planned the trip in advance, it was not possible to join “package tour” organised by number of travel agencies and could not do as it was Off season. Adiyen wishes to share my experience with all of you and request the bhagavathas to correct the shortcomings. Adiyen was blessed to take my father aged about 70 years a heart patient , to this divya desam and it would not be an exaggeration to say that only because of my acharyar’s and elders’ blessings , the trip was very comfortable.

HIGHWAYS (HN1) DEPARTMENT G.O. Ms. No. 189 Dated: 17-10-2002 Read the following 1. G.O. Ms. No. 533 TPT dated. 23.5.1989 2. G.O..Ms .No.59 Highways (HN1) Department dated 16.3.2001 3. From the Project Director ,Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project letter No.1414/2002 /B Section dated. 23.7.2002. ORDER: In the G.O. first read above the Government have accorded administrative sanction of Rs.40.00 lakhs for acquisition of lands for Kumbakonam bye-pass. 2. In the G.O. Second read above the Government have sanctioned Rs.49.50 Crores for acquisition of lands under Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project . 3. In his letter third read above the Project Director, Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project has stated that the approved Kumbakonam bye-pass alignment starts at km 2/10 of Kumbakonam-Sirkazhi road and ends at km. 129/4 of Kumbakonam-Thanjavur road for a length of 8.20 km. The estimate for Rs.44.00 lakhs was technically sanctioned by Chief Engineer (General). This envisages acquisition of lands of about 26 hectares in 10 villages. Lands were acquired to an extent of 11.05.00 hectares at a cost of Rs.34.58 lakhs in 6 villages. Lands were partly acquired in 4 other villages for an extent of 9.75.50 hectares. The value of these lands of 9.75.50 hectares is Rs.36.15 lakhs.

Hindu believes that lord Vishnu got salvation from curse of Brinda (wife of Jalandhar) here. Therefore he is worshipped as Muktinath (Lit. the lord of salvation). The holy shrine, which is said to have risen on its own, is one of eight such shrines (the others include Srirangam, Sri Mushnam, Tirupati, Naimisaranyam, Thottadri, Pushkaram and Badrinath). This Pagoda Style Muktinath Temple is also one of 108 Vaishnava shrines. Here in the early 19th century the Hindus consecrated a Vishnu temple and named is Muktinath - Lord of Liberation. There are 108 waterspouts in the back yard of this temple called as Muktidhara where froozen water are continuously flowing from the bull head and two Kunda (ponds in front of the temple).

    Sri “Srimadhe Ramanujaya Namaha, Srimadhe Vara Vara Muniye Namaha” ThiruNangur Divya Desam: Myself, V.Loganathan and P.Srinivasan, my friend , one fine day planned to visit all the divya desams in and around thirunangur area, or I must say that our beloved Perumal has bestowed on us and called us to give his dharsan in all the said thirupathis. In bakthi special, Kumudham’s, a monthly magazine, on the heading “108 Thirupathis”, Ms. Priya kalyanaraman is writing all about every divya desam, in each issue, which was really, very useful for our trip. The writings of Ms. Priya kalyanaraman, elaborates the history back up of every divya desam and all the details including the timings of temple opening, Bhattacharya’s addresses and phone numbers. Our special thanks goes to Ms. Priya Kalyanaraman and Kumudham’s Bhakti special. On 5th December 2004, Sunday, by evening we started our holy trip from koyambedu Mofussil bus terminus (CMBT) at 22:15 hrs by the bus 157PP to chidambaram, it had reached chidambaram by 03:00 hrs on 6th December 2004. It is about 200 Km from Chennai and the bus charge is Rs 66/=. On arrival at chidambaram we pick up another bus to sirkazhi and arrived at this place within half-hour. The distance is 20 Km and the bus charge is Rs 6/. We got alighted at the new bus terminus instead of old bus terminus. It seems more mansions and hotels are available only at old bus terminus. Immediately upon arrival to this place, as we are lucky we got a hotel/mansion at the bus stop itself.
