Your generous contribution to your Parish is greatly appreciated! May the Good Lord reward you abundantly! Our Lady and the Resurrection by Fr. John Hardon, S.J. It is not only a pious opinion that the Risen Savior first appeared to His Mother Mary on East- er Sunday. No less than six Doctors of the Church, including SS. Ambrose, Anselm and Albert the Great held that Our Lady was the first witness of the Resurrection. Pope Benedict XIV declared that this fact is "based on the tradition proclaimed by ancient architectural and liturgical monuments, starting from Jerusalem itself." Therefore it is not surprising that St. Ignatius of Loyola in his Spiritual Exercises simply as- sumes that Jesus "appeared in body and soul to His Blessed Mother" immediately after rising from the dead. In fact, Ignatius makes this Marian mystery the first of fourteen meditations on the risen life of Christ.

  • Lenten Quiz for Levels 5-8
Lenten Quiz for Levels 5-8 1. What is the liturgical color during Lent? Violet The liturgical color during Lent is violet, typically. However, there are a few days throughout the season that use other colors. The feasts of the Annunciation, on March 25, and St. Joseph, on March 19, can use white vestments, as can Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday. The Fourth Sunday of Lent, Laetare Sunday, calls for the color rose where it is the custom. The Sixth Sunday during Lent, Palm Sunday, uses red vestments, as does Good Friday. 2. Ash Wednesday is a Holy Day of Obligation. False. Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation as many mistakenly believe, but it tends to be one of the more crowded Masses of the Church Year. It is certainly a good idea to start out the season of Lent with this important Mass, which reminds us of the penitence we are to be practicing during the season, as well as our own mortality. 3. Why do we receive ashes on Ash Wednesday? Because of the penitential nature of the season. We receive ashes as a reminder of our repentance, sorrow, and humility, as ashes symbolize in the Bible. They also remind us that “thou art dust, and to dust thou shall return.” (It is also not a requirement that Catholics receive ashes on Ash Wednesday.) 4. Why do Catholics set aside Fridays as particularly sacrificial days? Because it is the day Christ died for our sins. Fridays are always considered sacrificial days, both during Lent and during the rest of the year, because Christ died for us on the cross on a Friday.

  • Avoiding Easter Saturday [First Published in the Methodist
P a g e | 1 Avoiding Easter Saturday [First published in the Methodist publication Momentum, Issue 7, Spring 2008] The teacher and writer Alan Lewis used to talk of workshops that he’d led on the theme of Easter. The trouble was, he said, that groups were happy to talk about Good Friday but then they wanted to jump forward to Easter Day as quickly as possible. That long hiatus of Easter Saturday, when Jesus lies alone in a borrowed tomb, was to be avoided. Was that, Alan wondered, because we simply don’t like talking about death? And yet, he said, if we believe that God lived in and through Jesus Christ then it’s important for us to think not only about what was happening to Jesus, dead and buried, but what was happening to God… also dead and buried. It’s a tough idea to get your head round – that God, too, experiences death on the cross and “knows how to die”. Alan came to understand that the God’s aloneness and despair on Easter Saturday is precisely that part of the Easter story that most closely mirrors so much of our own human experience. Three events of the last century, he suggests, bring into focus the sense of despair we so often feel about our world: Auschwitz Hiroshima Chernobyl … three events that represent the possibility of soulless inhumanity, a nuclear winter and, at Chernobyl, “the terrible possibility of planetary death… the ultimate eco-catastrophe”. • Sermon Transcript: Good Friday
Copyright © 2017 Territorial Mission Resources Department - Australia Southern Territory 1 Written by Christopher Trodden B.A (Bib.Stud) Easter series: Message 2 Sermon Outline: Good Friday Topic: Easter Friday Main Point: Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on Good Friday, we can now enter through the door that leads to eternal life. Intended Response: Step into a new way of living and reveal the Kingdom of God to others by opening the door to Jesus (Rev 3:20). Key Text Jn 10:7-15 Introduction When we think of Easter Friday, we often recall the dramatic imagery surrounding Jesus’ trial and crucifixion. This message seeks to engage our congregation and visitors by exploring another image – Jesus as the door to life. A. Jesus calls Himself a door Our faith is in the safest place when we trust in Jesus. Jesus was prepared to lay His life down to save ours. As the Good Shepherd, He will never leave us in times of trouble. Point One: Jesus truly is the Greatest Door of all! B. Why did Jesus die on Good Friday Sin came flooding into the earth when Adam and Eve disobeyed God. Actions open doors of consequence and sin. On Good Friday, Jesus opened up the door to eternal life. Point Two: Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on Good Friday, we can now enter through the door to eternal life. C. On the cross, Jesus closed the door that gives sin the rule over our lives But why didn’t Jesus lock the door to sin? We have a choice to close the door to sin and open the door to Jesus.

  • The Pope's Words at the Regina Caeli Prayer
    N. 210523a Sunday 23.05.2021 The Pope’s words at the Regina Caeli prayer At midday today, Solemnity of Pentecost, the Holy Father Francis appeared at the window of his study in the Vatican Apostolic Palace to pray the Regina Caeli with the faithful and pilgrims present in Saint Peter’s Square. The following are the Pope’s words of introduction to the Marian prayer: Before the Regina Caeli Dear Brothers and Sisters, Buongiorno! The book of the Acts of the Apostles (cf. 2:1-11) recounts what happens in Jerusalem 50 days after the Pasch of Jesus. The disciples were gathered in the Upper Room, and the Virgin Mary was with them. The Risen Lord had told them to remain in the city until they received the gift of the Spirit from on High. And this was revealed with a “sound” they suddenly heard come from heaven, like the “rush of a mighty wind” that filled the house they were in (cf. v. 2). Thus, it concerns a real but also symbolic experience. Something that happened but also gives us a symbolic message for our whole life. This experience reveals that the Holy Spirit is like a strong and freely flowing wind; that is, he brings us strength and brings us freedom: a strong and freely flowing wind. He cannot be controlled, stopped, nor measured; nor can his direction be foreseen. He cannot be understood within our human exigencies – we always try to frame things – he does not let himself be framed in our methods and our preconceptions.
