LOGIA 1 Review Essay: The Reform of Baptism and Confirmation in American Lutheranism Armand J. Boehme The Reform of Baptism and Confirmation in American Lutheranism. By Jeffrey A. Truscott. Drew University Studies in Liturgy 11. Lanham, Maryland & Oxford: The Scarecrow Press, Inc., 2003. his book1 is a study of the production of the baptismal the church.” Thus the crafters of LBW greatly expanded T and confirmation rites contained in Lutheran Book of the “assembly’s participation in the baptismal act” (pp. Worship (LBW).2 The theology that underlies LBW 33, 205). These changes flow from a theology of action and its understanding of worship has significantly (liturgy as the work of the people), which emphasizes altered the Lutheran understanding of baptism and the fact that the church or the congregation is the confirmation. The theological foundation of LBW has mediating agent of God’s saving activity (p. 33).6 For influenced other Lutheran church bodies, contributing LBW the sacraments are understood significantly to profound changes in the Lutheran ecclesiologically—as actions of the congregation (pp. landscape. As Truscott wrote, those crafting the 205-206)—rather than soteriologically—as God acting baptismal liturgy in LBW would have to “overturn” old to give his people grace and forgiveness. This leads to an theologies of baptism, deal with “a theology that” emphasis on baby drama, water drama, and other believed in “the necessity of baptism for salvation,” and congregational acts (pp. 24–26, 220). • Margaret Ross “Of Friends and Trees
Margaret Ross “Of friends and trees, tents, paths and playing fields”:1 Nature, Gender, and Race at Camp Orendaga History 9833B: Environmental History April 25th, 2018 Professor Alan MacEachern 1 Western Archives, Western University (hereafter referred to as ARCC), YMCA-YWCA fonds, Box 5368, Orendaga summer camp newspaper (Orendaga Saga), 1936, 1. Ross 1 Camp Orendaga was an all-girls camp that ran during the 1930s and 1940s near Bayfield, Ontario. Operated by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), it catered to middle- class girls looking to partake in general camp activities and learn specialized skills in “God’s great out-of-doors.”2 Many girls contributed to the writing of the Orendaga Saga, a newspaper that was distributed to campers at the end of their two-week sessions. The Orendaga “scribes” wrote varied articles, stories, and poems to document their stay, often including drawings and paintings to provide visuals. Although the secondary literature on summer camping highlights the perspectives and opinions of adult reformers and camp directors, the camp newspaper offers a rare opportunity to balance their views with the perceptions of youth. This essay will examine the Orendaga Saga between 1934 and 1950 in order to shed light on adolescent interpretations of changing discourses about nature and its relationship to gender and race in the early to mid- twentieth century.3 First and foremost, this essay is an environmental history, and questions what female campers thought about nature and their recreational outdoor experiences.4 While reformers and administrators believed that the Canadian wilderness was beneficial for children and adolescents, campers themselves were far less reflective about nature’s redemptive qualities, and typically viewed the camp setting as a backdrop against which they negotiated personal relationships and burgeoning friendships.

  • 1 Seventh Sunday After Pentecost Service Book and Hymnal and Lutheran Book of Worship
Seventh Sunday After Pentecost 7/11/21 Service Book and Hymnal and Lutheran Book of Worship - Setting Two GOD GATHERS US IN EVERY PLACE AS HIS HOLY PEOPLE PRELUDE WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Please stand as you are able. In remembrance of Baptism, you may sign a cross on your chest or forehead. We gather in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE CONFESSION OF SINS (adapted from SBH p.1) Hebrews 10:22; Psalm 124:8, 32:5; John 3:16 Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart, and confess our sins unto God our Father, asking him, in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the Name of the Lord. Who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. And he forgave the iniquity of my sin. Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto you, that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against you by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring your grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. We keep silence for self-reflection and contrition. O most merciful God, who has given your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us, and for his sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of you and of your will, and true obedience to your Word, that by your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

FOR THE CHURCH AT WITTENBERG [FORMULA MISSAE ET COMMUNIONIS PRO ECCLESIA WITTEMBERGENSIS] 1523 FORMULA MISSAE ET COMMUNIONIS 1523 INTRODUCTION Nicolaus Hausmann, pastor primarius of the Marien kirche at Zwickau and a most devoted friend of Luther, had written repeatedly to him requesting advice and direction in matters connected with church worship. One of these requests had been for an order for saying mass which would conform with the principles of the movement in which they both were so <leeply concerned. Luthre had replied more or less promptly to all of Haus mann's requests except the last, and only after repeated urg ing by letter, through Stephen Roth, who was studying theology at Wittenberg, and through other friends did Luther meet Hausmann's hope and plea. Luther sent Hausmann a copy of a pamphlet 011 another subject on November 13. 1523, and in the accompanying letter told him that he would send to him a copy of the form of mass which he proposed for the ttse of the Wittenberg church. This may have been ready for printing at the time of writing this letter, for a few weeks later, on December 4, Luther sent Hausmann a printed copy of the Formula mis sae et communionis pro ecclesia Wittembergensi. It reached him 011 December 11, and its arrival moved Hausmann to expressions of gratitude, joy, and satisfaction.
