VolumeXll. No.3 Summer 2003 The Mocks: Kentucky Bourbon & Civil War Spies By fim Horany Son in law of Margaret Mock Caroll

Five years ago, when I chose to marry Deborah Carroll, daughter of Margaret Mock Caroll, I had no earthly idea that I would become so absorbed with the search for historical information on the family founded by Wlliam Randolph Mock, born777l in Lincoln, VA. Margaret Mock Carroll is a direct descendant of Randolph Mock (121-1853), daughter of Louis F. Mock, who was the son of John Lewis Mock, who was the son of John J. Mock who was the son of Randolph Mock. When I asked Margarefs permission to delve into the history of her family I had no idea that I would one day be able to come face to face with her most famous Mock family heirloom, a bottle of Kentudsy Bourbon Whiskey, simply known as 'Old Mock Whiskey." Margarefs family history started with William Randolph Mock, born in 121 in Virginia. At a very young age, he and his parents moved to Georgia and sometime around 1795 William Randolph moved to Kentuclsy to what is now known as Boyle County. He acquired a sizable amount of land approximately 3.5 miles north of what is now known as Danville, KY. The area he possessed was known as Hanods Run and later as Mock's Creek after William Randolph gave permission to build a bridge across the creek in 1836. His farrr was called Cedar Grove Stock Farm. William Randolph raised and trained Kentucky thoroughbreds on his farm and w.rs one of the earliest landowners in the new state of Kentudqy. He owned 550 acres of land and more than 100 head of fine breed race horses. His estate also owned approximately 25 slaves. There are no records held by the family today that can shed light on the circumstances that brought William Randolph to start a distillery. History teaches us that the best bourbon in the world comes from Kentucky, so it probably seemed like a good thing to do for Randolph at the time. All the information we have was passed down by word of mouth. He founded the distillery llil.L84Z according to Minnie Bell Mock, great great granddaughter of William Randolph Mock. As Minnie Bell so appropriately noted, "Mn Mock establislud the W.R. Mock Astilluy, making a fne branil of nur mash whiskey, under the lnbel of "Old Mock." William Randolplu died in September 1853 and according to the last will and testament left a sizeable amount of acreage to his sons John J., Ezekial F. and William R., jr. In addition he left funds to his children and grandchildren. His will does not specifically mention the distillery, however it does state that the balance of his estate after all debts were paid was willed to |ohn f., Ezekial F. and William R., fr. 30 Mock Family Historian Volume Xll No.3 . But as the old saying goes, "Chance favors the open mind." In March 2003,Lalong with several other Mock relatives who had expressed interestin the RandolphMock family, were contacted by Ron Moore, List owner and Moderator of the Mock-Gen-L List server for the Mock Family Historian association. His message was a surprise to say the least, as a family that had possession'of a bottle of prohibition-bottled "Old Mock Whiskey" had contacted him and they wanted to see if they could auction it to a member of the Randolph Mock family. Whafs more, the bottle was full, and was still sealed, never opened, and included the box it came in. It had been distilled in 1916 and boftled in 1933. Summer 2003 MockFamily Historian 39 The Wuerttemberg Emigration Index Submitte d bv lkthv Busbu The Wuerttemberg Emigration Index is a seven-volude work-that represents the thousands of German and Prussian immigrants to the United States that made application to emigrate at Wuerftemberg, . This collection, filmed at Ludwigsburg, contains the names of apprrcximately 6Q000 persons who made application to leave Germany from the late eighteenth century to 1900. The information supplied on eadr penson includes: name, date and place of birttr, residence at time of application and application date, and microfilm number. The Wuerttemberg emigration records are a unique collection of papers and documents on applicants who filed for permission to emigrate from Germany during the nineteenth century. These records are not alphabetized nor are the pages numbered, which makes a search through them complicated and time consuming. In many cases, as many as eight pages were written on one person, induding a birth certificate or a family record, military release, and renunciation of citizenship rights. Often the handwriting in these documents is almost indecipherable for even an experienced German researcher. It is abnost impossible for a layman to search through these records successfully. All inlormation included in Wuerttemberg Emigration Index has been extracted from the original Wuerttemberg emi- gtation records filmed at Ludwigsburg and available on mioofilm at the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City or through its branch LDS family history centers. Although all of the records were handwritten by German speaking people, the spelling of names varies from one document to the other. In cases where applicants used their own signature, that spelling was used.
