New hospital sets up in Las Cruces

BY ELVA K. ÖSTERREICH

indy Slaydon has some extensive experience opening hospitals Cthrough her life and now has come to enjoy what Las Cruces has to offer as she takes the city’s most recent medical asset, a whole new hospital, into its new journey. Slaydon said she has worked for large organizations and the best thing about the smaller, more intimate setting at Three Crosses is that “the heart is at home.” Three Crosses Regional Hospital offers acute care with full emergency,

emergency beds, 10 intensive care beds and 36 medical surgical beds. It has four surgical suites, full-service diagnostic imaging and an interventional cardiology program with two cath labs, echo and nuclear medicine capability. The hospital was designed to improve patient care in a hospitality-style design. Calming colors and colorful cactus- bloom paintings welcome visitors. Plans for the future include a neighboring rehabilitation hospital, already in progress, and other, related facilities to provide all needed services in one location. One problem with today’s acute health care is fragmentation, Slaydon said. The model Three Crosses is hoping to develop allows a patient to have a team working together to schedule needed services. Rather than going to one specialist, getting a recommendation and then scheduling another, the patient could go in and see maybe the pulmonologist one day, the cardiologist the next day and so on, providing a continuation of care that saves time and enables diagnosis sooner.

n 2013 the state administration under Gov. Suzannah Martinez shut down many of the mental health services Iin the southern part of the state with claims of fraud and overbilling. Roque Garcia was running Southwest Counseling in Las Cruces, a nonprofit with ties to Border Services Mental Health in Silver City and New Mexico Human Development in Anthony. All three organizations were shut down by the Martinez administration at the time. “We were accused of fraud, of $2.5 million, and they wouldn’t

give us any information as to what we had done wrong,” Garcia K. ÖSTERREICH PHOTOS BY ELVA said. “So, they closed us down. Not only clients, but employees, everybody suffered.” At the point that it closed, Southwest Counseling Center Southwest Counseling CEO Roque Garcia was the oldest community mental health program in the state and the largest except for the in and began tele-med services. Our therapists work from home the organization, Border Area Mental Health Services, was not most of the time. We provided tele-med here (Las Cruces), only up and running but also saw the need in the outlying areas Deming, Silver City and the reservations – Pinehill on the Navajo reservation, and some in Albuquerque.” He said, even for them, it has been more difficult to provide services during the COVID-19 crisis, but they were able to get a jump on the tele-med portion. Now, Border Area Mental Health Services has changed its name back to Southwest Counseling Center and is growing again. Plans include opening an office in Anthony to serve southern Doña Ana County. Two of the providers are fluent in Spanish, others can speak it but are not comfortable to provide the services in languages. But, Garcia said, they have a reliable translation service which also offers access to sign language. They offer psychological services, counseling and juvenile community corrections in the Silver City/Hidalgo County area. The organization accepts all the big insurance companies, Medicaid and Medicare.
