Nevertheless, the research of this habitat lags far behind the study of caves and soil, due to technical and time-consuming demands. Data on Myriapoda in scree habitat from eleven localities in seven different geomorphological units of the Czech and Slovak Republics were processed. -
Literature-Based Survey on the Swiss Fauna of Chilopoda

Even though the first records date from 1845, a checklist has not been drawn up until now. Literature research based on 88 publications and 2 online databases offers a preliminary list of 62 species and 1 subspecies. Type species from the Swiss area are specified. Additional potential species are named and might be added in the future to a complete checklist incorporating almost 90 species. Keywords: fauna, Chilopoda, literature, species list, Switzerland 1. Introduction Research into the Diplopoda and the Chilopoda in Switzerland demonstrates two totally different levels. For the Diplopoda there is an excellent work by Ariane Pedroli-Christen dating from 1993. It covers the fauna and ecology of 127 species and presents their global and Swiss distribution (for Switzerland in a 5 x 5 km grid!). Unfortunately, she abandoned her scientific work some years ago and has no successor in Switzerland working with this group at such a level. In contrast, the Swiss centipedes have not had such an intensive level of study. Up to the end of 2008 a published checklist was not available, not even a preliminary one. This may seem surprising, as most of the surrounding countries or areas already possess such lists. As examples may be named Austria (Würmli 1972b: 71 species), France (Geoffroy & Iorio 2009: 145 species) or Italy (Checklist of the species of the Italian fauna 2003: 155 species). -

In light of competing hypotheses on arthropod phylogeny, independent data are needed in addition to traditional morphology and modern molecular approaches. One promising approach involves comparisons of structure and development of the nervous system. In addition to arthropod brain and ventral nerve cord morphology and anatomy, individually identifiable neurons (IINs) provide new charac- ter sets for comparative neurophylogenetic analyses. However, very few species and transmitter systems have been investigated, and still fewer species of centipedes have been included in such analyses. In a multi-methodological approach, we analyze the ventral nerve cord of the centipede Lithobius forficatus using classical histology, X-ray micro-computed tomography and immunohistochemical experiments, combined with confocal laser-scanning microscopy to characterize walking leg ganglia and identify IINs using various neurotransmitters. In addition to the subesophageal ganglion, the ventral nerve cord of L. forficatus is composed of the forcipular ganglion, 15 well-separated walking leg ganglia, each associated with eight pairs of nerves, and the fused terminal ganglion. Within the medially fused hemiganglia, distinct neuropilar condensations are located in the ventral-most domain. -

PONS 1 i Mateo VADELL 2 Abstract In the caves of the Balearic Islands over 300 species of invertebrates (including terrestrial and aquatic species) are known until today. Of these, approximately 50 can be considered genuinely troglobiontic species. Over half of these are endemic species unique to the Islands, a percentage large enough in evolutionary terms to give an idea of its great heritage value and interest in its preservation. The cave organisms constitute a very important part of the catalog of endemic fauna in the Balearic Islands. Since Racovitza described Typhlocirolana moraguesi in 1905, the first step in the new science of biospeleology, have been many scientists who have penetrated to the caves in search of new and enigmatic species. The Balearics were also the birthplace of the discipline with the interest and constant presence of local researchers in national and international scientific publications. Since 1905 there have been many papers published on the ongoing findings of cave species. For the preparation of this article have been selected terrestrial cave species that are new to the catalogs of taxa published since 1995 (publication date of the monograph Endins 20) or those species that are important regarding biogeography, particularly the endemisms. Resum A les coves de les illes Balears s’han trobat més de 300 espècies d’invertebrats (entre espècies terrestres i aquàtiques). D’elles, aproximadament unes 50 poden considerar-se genuïnament troglòbies. -

Tomić Institute of Zoology, Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, 11000 Belgrade, Serbia Abstract — Criteria for delimiting larval stadia in different animal groups, the number of adult and hatchling leg-bearing trunk segments in the Chilopoda, and modes of centipede development (hemianamorphic and epimorphic) are briefly considered. Data are presented on variation during post-larval development in the following morphological characters of Eupolybothrus transsylvanicus: body length; body width; head length; head width; antenna length; length of the 14th and 15th legs; number of antennal articles, ocelli, teeth on the forcipular coxosternite, and coxal pores; projections on T.6, T.7, T.9, T.11, and T.13; spinu- lation on the last pair of legs; and the degree of development of the genitalia (gonopods). Key criteria for defining post-larval stadia in natural populations of E. transsylvanicus, the boundary between juvenile and adult stadia, and the number of post-larval stadia are also analyzed and discussed.
