  • Mapping New Jerusalem: Space, National Identity and Power in British Espionage Fiction 1945-79
Mapping New Jerusalem: Space, National Identity and Power in British Espionage Fiction 1945-79. Submitted by Samuel Geoffrey Goodman to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, March 2012. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature……………… ………………… .... 1 Abstract This thesis argues that the espionage fiction of Graham Greene, Ian Fleming and John le Carré published between 1945 and 1979 illustrates a number of discontinuities, disjunctions and paradoxes related to space, sovereignty and national identity in post- war Britain. To this effect, the thesis has three broad aims. Firstly, to approach the representations of space and sovereign power in the work of these authors published during the period 1945-1979, examining the way in which sovereign power produces space, and then how that power is distributed and maintained. Secondly, to analyse the effect that sovereign power has on a variety of social and cultural environments represented within spy fiction and how the exercise of power affects the response of individuals within them. Thirdly, to establish how the intervention of sovereign power within environments relates to the creation, propagation and exclusion of national identities within each author’s work. By mapping the application of sovereign power throughout various environments, the thesis demonstrates that the control of environment is inextricably linked to the sovereign control of British subjects in espionage fiction.

  • Live the London Club Life
Travel Tales Live the London Club Life by Llewellyn Toulmin What do these disparate famous fictional and real people have in common: James Bond, M, Auric Goldfinger, Mycroft Holmes, Phileas Fogg, Bertie Wooster, Gwyneth Paltrow, H.G. Wells, Prince Phillip, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Claus von Bulow, Benjamin Disraeli, William Gladstone, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling and the Duke of Wellington? They all are or were members of London clubs, storied in fact and fiction. Many of these clubs are just as interesting, historic and beautiful as the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul’s, and other major London landmarks. It used to be that it was impossible for us “colonials” to enter, much less stay at, these rarified clubs. But that is changing. Let me give you a brief tour, describing a few of the clubs I have stayed at, some of their quirks, and how you can literally “join the club.” The Carleton Club is a temple to the Conservative Party. It is in a deceptively standard looking Georgian building at 69 St. James Street, but then surprises with a gorgeous interior space featuring dramatic curving stairs, topped by an amazing large dome that is invisible from the street. The highlight of the Club’s art collection is a portrait of the Queen Mother, with her signature on the nearby register. The Club is in an excellent location just a few hundred yards from St. James Palace, and very close to terrific boutique shops on Jermyn Street. The Club was founded in 1832 and was bombed in World War II by the Luftwaffe, and again in 1990 by the IRA.

  • British Spy Fiction and the End of Empire
British Spy Fiction and the End of Empire The position of spy fiction is largely synonymous in popular cul- ture with ideas of patriotism and national security, with the spy himself indicative of the defence of British interests and the pre- servation of British power around the globe. This book reveals a more complicated side to these assumptions than typically per- ceived, arguing that the representation of space and power within spy fiction is more complex than commonly assumed. Instead of the British spy tirelessly maintaining the integrity of Empire, this volume illustrates how spy fiction contains disunities and dis- junctions in its representation of space, and the relationship between the individual and the state in an era of declining British power. Focusing primarily on the work of Graham Greene, Ian Flem- ing, Len Deighton, and John le Carré, the volume brings a fresh methodological approach to the study of spy fiction and Cold War culture. It presents close textual analysis within a framework of spatial and sovereign theory as a means of examining the cultural impact of decolonization and the shifting geopolitics of the Cold 3/331 War. Adopting a thematic approach to the analysis of space in spy fiction, the text explores the reciprocal process by which con- textual history intersects with literature throughout the period in question, arguing that spy fiction is responsible for reflecting, strengthening and, in some cases, precipitating cultural anxieties over decolonization and the end of Empire. This study promises to be a welcome addition to the develop- ing field of spy fiction criticism and popular culture studies.
