The rulemakers of the UEFA club competitions have always thought that the winners of Europe’s most prestigious competition should be allowed to defend their title. Every previous champion has been given that opportunity and eight clubs – with Real Madrid at the top of the list – have gone on to lift the trophy in two or more consecutive seasons. This year, a combination of circumstances showed that the rules were not sufficiently stringent to ensure that the reigning champions could defend their crown. We therefore faced a difficult dilemma: should we bring a long tradition to an end or amend the rules a little? In a season in which we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the European club competitions, we chose the second option, while trying to keep any detrimental effect on the other participants to a minimum.

Building on the Strategic Plan of 2012, a policy document, The Way Forward, was presented in December 2013, which outlined initiatives focusing on clubs, schools, coaching pathways, academies and the women’s game. Work is already underway in many of these areas, particularly the last mentioned, where a head of women’s rugby has been appointed to lead developments, while staffing, locations and structures are being identified as I write for the four regional academies.

The Arsenal of Protestantism 163 Bibliographical References 179 Index 183 PREFACE The brief period between 1559 and 1562, interlacing the reigns of Henry II and of two of his sons, Francis II and Charles IX, was momentous in the history of French " Protestantism. Consequently studies in diplomacy and la " haute politique of that epoch of four years have been vigorously pursued, but the social and economic questions have been inadequately treated. Indeed, much of the real nature of the reign of Henry II and of the growth of the Reform during his incumbency is obscure. Nothing like " " (lie Catalogue des Actes du roi Frangois Ier as yet exists for the reign of Henry II. Therefore it has seemed to the writer eminently desirable to begin an investigation of the development of Protestantism through the operation of social and economic forces, particularly among the indus trial and working classes. The economic activity of the Huguenots reveals one of the aspects of their social life, and their commerce forms one of the great chapters in world history.

That excitement stemmed not only from the on-field action, but also the realisation that the sport is on the threshold of one of the most significant periods in its international history – a period in which the RLEF is positioned to play a major part. The RLEF’s fundamental role – to develop the sport in Europe and the surrounding territories that temporarily fall under our jurisdiction – has never been more important It is significant to note that, following than it is now, with rugby league keen to Lebanon and Serbia’s elevation in 2012, we broaden its global footprint while are now starting to see non-traditional rugby understanding the need to do so in a countries reaching this level of maturity for sustainable and efficient manner.

Imagined Geographies and the Production of Space in Occitània and Northern Catalunya in the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries by Jonathan C. Farr A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the University of Michigan 2016 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Diane Owen Hughes, Chair Associate Professor Hussein Anwar Fancy Professor Elizabeth L. Sears Professor Paolo Squatriti 1 © Jonathan C. Farr 2016 Acknowledgments The project that would become this dissertation began in a seminar on “Medieval Cities” with my adviser, Diane Owen Hughes, to whom I owe a great debt. Her advice at every stage of my graduate career has been tremendously helpful and her confidence in the project—and in my ideas and their written expression—was unwavering, even when mine was lacking. The other members of my committee also deserve thanks; Hussein Fancy, Paolo Squatriti, and Betsy Sears each provided invaluable feedback and have influenced my research, writing, and teaching (always for the better) over the course of my time at the University of Michigan. I would also like to recognize Peggy McCracken, Ray Van Dam, Christian de Pee, and Katherine French for their encouragement and advice, and Tom Green and Tom Willette for organizing the Premodern Colloquium, where part of this dissertation was workshopped. Portions of my research were presented at the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies, where I was a graduate fellow, and I would especially like to thank Greg Parker there. My fellow graduate students have always been generous both in devoting their time and intellect to reflecting on my project and in giving of their friendship.
