Council Activities 10 Agency 11 This last weekend, I attended (virtually) the Supreme State Deputy Midterm meeting. It was a very well-organized, energetic and uplifting event. We all heard inspiring Programs 14 words from the Supreme Knight Carl Anderson (we were reminded how the Blessed Michael Free Throw 15 McGivney founded the Order during a period of a pandemic, much like today and how we are Charity Appeal 16 all domestic missionaries, Living in Faith). We also heard from our Supreme Chaplain Archbishop Lori. There was much shared on the miracle of which lead to the Beatification of Special Olympics 17 the Blessed Michael McGivney as well as discussion about “Fraternal Charity”. A video, which Family 19 I would encourage all to watch on YouTube: “A Witness for the World: The global impact of Remembrance Day 20 the Blessed Michael McGivney” was shared. (Please do watch the ~30 minutes video, very inspiring. The rest of the weekend was filled with many great speakers with a ton of Conscience 21 information to share. Protection Persecuted While I won’t share every detail of the meetings as the State will be having its own 21 Christians State / District Deputy Meeting in a couple of weeks (December 5&6, 2020), I would encourage all to attend the various upcoming webinars that Supreme is hosting (changes to 4th Degree 22 the Council meetings formats). It will help get you informed of a few things before the District Public Relations 23 Deputies will have the opportunity to share with you (and in a lot more detail). The training Giving Tuesday 24 sessions that Supreme is offering are highly educational and every Council and its members would benefit from participating in a few each month. We know many Councils are struggling Sask K of C with planning events; these webinars and training sessions will help provide some guidance. Free benefits, free Columbia Magazine. An opportunity to learn more about the Knights of Columbus Insurance. An opportunity to participate in Council functions as a Knight. You will not find a better deal than that! I know I shared a lot of information in (and since) the last newsletter, and we will be having the Midterm meeting next weekend, so I will keep my message short with these few key things I challenge each of you to do: Leave No Neighbor Behind – pick a program option and just do it, Reach out to your Parish Priests & brother Knights just to say“ hi”, Invite a man to join the Order, Get your Council forms in, Contact your Field Agent and schedule a meeting to learn about the latest options available to you, and Call your Priests and Brother Knights just to say “Hi, do you need anything?”. (Yes, I said this one twice, but “yes” it is that important.) I do have one request. I need your help. I am looking for someone deeply knowledgeable in “The Social Medias”, yes that scary internet thing, the black hole of information, the “don’t touch that button” stuff. Yes: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc… If you know of a Brother Knight who would be willing to work with the State team, helping us share information with the membership and the public, please forward me their name so I work towards building a team (adding to our fantastic team) to help us share and promote the good works of the Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus. May I even suggest considering approaching a new member who joined online (probably has some tech- savvy if he joined online) and approach him if he would like to help by getting involved. I would appreciate the extra sets of eyes and ears. Thnx. As we enter the season of Advent, I do want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. Vivat Jesus! Until the next time, Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, and Thank You for all you do in Joseph Riffel the name of the Knights of Columbus. Saskatchewan State Deputy #LNNB STATE CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE The Example of Joseph Mary and Jesus are, of course, the proper focus of Christmas, but the season of Advent, which we now observe, is also the true time of St. Joseph. The Gospel for the Second Sunday proclaims that John the Baptist was sent to “Prepare the way of the Lord,” as Jesus began his public ministry, but the man who “prepared the way” for Jesus’ birth was Joseph. Just think of all he did and suffered to make sure that Mary was safe and the Child would find a home in the world. Strong and silent, obedient and resourceful, he is the embodiment of the “servant leadership” that Jesus would later preach saying, “He who would be great among you must be a servant of all” (Lk 22:26). But if you look at all of the scripture that we will hear this Advent, you will notice that there is not one reference to the adopted father of Jesus until the Fourth Sunday, and even then it is a passing reference only stating that the angel Gabriel was sent by God, “to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.” Joseph is an important aspect of this Advent time, but he does so, as men often do, by standing in the background and doing the small duties that the leader of the household must do. And not a word from him is heard throughout the entire Gospel story. He is simply there, leading when needed, and stepping into the shadows when the time comes for the Son of God to shine. What can this mean for us, especially fathers who have St. Joseph as a patron? May I recommend that we look for “Joseph moments” in our day-to-day lives? After all, chances are we are quite often offered opportunities to exercise the “servant leadership” of St. Joseph. A good place to start is to become familiar with God’s word in Scripture so that (Continued on page3 ) www.kofcsask.com Page 3 Saskatchewan Knightline Nov 2020 (Continued from page2 ) we will become accustomed to the tone of his promptings in our own lives. Thus, reading the Bible – especially the Gospels – is Step One in recognizing the “Joseph moments” in our lives. Here are some other suggestions: 2. If you find your wife or family in any danger, take well-considered and effective action, just as Joseph took the Holy Family to Egypt. The dangers you face may not include a mad King Herod, but be aware of the workload your wife may face at home, the pressures of childcare, the financial burdens of your family and even something as seemingly small as gossip about your family among in-laws. Stand up and present yourself as a defender of your wife and children. 3. Be a leader of the spiritual welfare of your family. It is amazing how attuned and attentive Joseph was to God’s angels, who appeared to him on three occasions commanding three huge tasks. As a father, don’t leave the religion to your wife. Your children will grow up thinking that faith is only feminine. Give them an example of faithful masculine leadership, which includes humility in the presence of God. 4. Be open to changing your plans for the sake of your family. Joseph may have imagined a normal marital and domestic life with his beloved bride. But he gave up all such dreams for the love of God and the love of Mary. Acknowledge the possibility that God’s plans for you and your family may be different from your plans. May God Bless you and keep you safe. Fr. 23 January 2017 Un-vanishing Angularities? Placing Pakistani Christians in Third-Millennium Cultural Texts Madeline Clements Abstract In 1947, Jinnah imagined Pakistan as a secular state in which religious communities’ ‘angularities’ would ‘vanish’. Yet, with the consolidation of a national ideology which invokes Islam as Pakistan’s reason for being, this vision has become eroded. In the wake of 9/11 and the West-led ‘war on terror’, the vulnerability of Pakistan’s Christian minority to acts of ‘retaliation’ on account of a mistaken ‘Western’ affiliation, and to more ambiguous forms of social and legal discrimination, seems ever more apparent, and problematic to address. This chapter offers contextualised readings of autobiographical, oratorial and photographic texts produced in the wake of such events as the 2011 murder of Pakistan’s Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti, who had defended the Christian woman Asia Bibi against blasphemy charges, and the 2013 attacks on Lahore’s Joseph Colony. It argues against the championing of these creative outputs as ‘representative’ of minority experience. Instead, it proposes a cautious unfolding of what they may reveal about the scope that exists in third-millennium Pakistan for the place of its indigenous Christians to be articulated, made visible, and imagined differently. Keywords 9/11, Pakistan, Christians, non-Muslim minorities, memoir, autobiography, photography, representation, Asia Bibi, Blasphemy, Aasia Nasir, Malcolm Hutcheson, Joseph Colony. • Global Minorities Alliance Submission
Evidence by Global Minorities Alliance Re: AK & SK (Christians: risk) Pakistan Presented to the UK All Parliamentary Group on International religious freedom and belief on the 10th and 11th November, 2015 Author Shahid Khan Introduction to Global Minorities Alliance Global Minorities Alliance1 is a UK charity which advocates the cause of the religious minorities around the world. We have listed Pakistan, among others, as a country of concern. In 2014, we complied a report entitled ‘Invisible citizens of Pakistan2’ which catalogues the widespread persecution of all religious minorities including Christians in Pakistan. Pakistan: An introduction Pakistan was not envisioned as an Islamic theocratic state by its founders.3 Theodore Gabriel (2007) argues that the liberal stance of Jinnah and Liaquat Ali Khan was gradually compromised in the years that followed the independence. Gabriel suggests that a shift from the foundational vision of the founding fathers is in contravention of the equal rights to the non-Muslims citizens as enshrined in the Objective Resolution of 1949. Global Minorities Alliance views this departure from the principle as an initiation of a series of unjust legislation, widespread patterns of discrimination, absence of legal, judicial and state protection which unfortunately persists to this day. Patrick Sookhdeo (2002) states that the campaign to enforce Shari’ah began in 1977 with the Pakistan National Alliance and their anti-secular slogan, Nizam-e-Mustafa which was taken up by Zia’s military government later the same year.4 As is evidenced from the examples cited above suggest the beginnings of the process of the Islamisation of Pakistan had unfortunately commenced soon after the independence of Pakistan which betrayed the trust of the religious minorities of Pakistan, whose leaders at the time had given their explicit consent to accede to a newly created Pakistan.

  • A CALL to ACTION David Alton – New York - October 29Th 2019
A CALL TO ACTION David Alton – New York - October 29th 2019 In congratulating Amanda Bowman for organising another important conference – this time on the rise of global intolerance - I am going to talk about our indifference, our silence and our blindness. Step back first to 1942 when Stefan Zweig first published his magnificent “The World of Yesterday – Memoirs of a European The masterful autobiography of this Jewish writer charts the rise of visceral hatred; how absurd theories of blood, race and difference, scapegoating and xenophobia, cultivated by populist leaders, rapidly morphed into the terrifying horrors and the shame of the concentration camps. In 1942, in a presentiment of what lay ahead, Zweig warned of the dangers of indifference: “We are none of us very proud of our political blindness at that time and we are horrified to see where it has brought us.” He described indifference as university professors were forced to scrub streets with their bare hands; devout Jews humiliated in their synagogues; apartments broken into and jewels torn out of the ears of trembling women – calling it “Hitler’s most diabolical triumph.” Zweig said: “it was our fate to be aware of everything catastrophic happening anywhere in the world at the hour and the second when it happened.” And that was the 1940s, before the digital age of Twitter and social media. Now it is live streamed and in every living room and on every mobile device within seconds – including pre- arranged broadcasts of mass shootings, courtesy of Facebook and Google. ISIS has used social media to express its genocidal intent in its recruitment and propaganda newsletters and videos.
