Membership 9 Greetings Your Excellencies, Reverend Fathers, my Brother Knights. Council Activities 10 Agency 11 This last weekend, I attended (virtually) the Supreme State Deputy Midterm meeting. It was a very well-organized, energetic and uplifting event. We all heard inspiring Programs 14 words from the Supreme Knight Carl Anderson (we were reminded how the Blessed Free Throw 15 McGivney founded the Order during a period of a pandemic, much like today and how we are Charity Appeal 16 all domestic missionaries, Living in Faith). We also heard from our Supreme Chaplain Archbishop Lori. There was much shared on the miracle of which lead to the of Special Olympics 17 the Blessed Michael McGivney as well as discussion about “Fraternal Charity”. A video, which Family 19 I would encourage all to watch on YouTube: “A Witness for the World: The global impact of Remembrance Day 20 the Blessed Michael McGivney” was shared. (Please do watch the ~30 minutes video, very inspiring. The rest of the weekend was filled with many great speakers with a ton of Conscience 21 information to share. Protection

Persecuted While I won’t share every detail of the meetings as the State will be having its own 21 Christians State / District Deputy Meeting in a couple of weeks (December 5&6, 2020), I would encourage all to attend the various upcoming webinars that Supreme is hosting (changes to 4th Degree 22 the Council meetings formats). It will help get you informed of a few things before the District Public Relations 23 Deputies will have the opportunity to share with you (and in a lot more detail). The training Giving Tuesday 24 sessions that Supreme is offering are highly educational and every Council and its members would benefit from participating in a few each month. We know many Councils are struggling Sask K of C with planning events; these webinars and training sessions will help provide some guidance. Charitable 23 The sessions are listed on the State Webpage, there is almost a new topic for every night. Foundation

*FREE ONLINE MEMBERSHIP. Supreme continues to share an open invitation to all eligible Catholic men to join the Order Online for free. As you invite candidates to visit: www.kofc.org/joinus, share the PROMO CODE: MCGIVNEY2020. (Note: also share your Council # and the proposer’s membership number with him). We recently sent out Posters to share with all. And we plan to continue to send out updated versions as well as other methods to encourage members to invite men (and their families) to join us. (Please remove

(Continued from page1 ) those old versions from the walls and put up some new ones. ). This offer does expire on December 31st at 10 pm, so please share this information with any possible candidate. One free year of online membership, no commitments. Free benefits, free Columbia Magazine. An opportunity to learn more about the Knights of Columbus Insurance. An opportunity to participate in Council functions as a Knight. You will not find a better deal than that!

I know I shared a lot of information in (and since) the last newsletter, and we will be having the Midterm meeting next weekend, so I will keep my message short with these few key things I challenge each of you to do: Leave No Neighbor Behind – pick a program option and just do it, Reach out to your Parish Priests & brother Knights just to say“ hi”, Invite a man to join the Order, Get your Council forms in, Contact your Field Agent and schedule a meeting to learn about the latest options available to you, and Call your Priests and Brother Knights just to say “Hi, do you need anything?”. (Yes, I said this one twice, but “yes” it is that important.)

I do have one request. I need your help. I am looking for someone deeply knowledgeable in “The Social Medias”, yes that scary internet thing, the black hole of information, the “don’t touch that button” stuff. Yes: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc… If you know of a Brother Knight who would be willing to work with the State team, helping us share information with the membership and the public, please forward me their name so I work towards building a team (adding to our fantastic team) to help us share and promote the good works of the Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus. May I even suggest considering approaching a new member who joined online (probably has some tech- savvy if he joined online) and approach him if he would like to help by getting involved. I would appreciate the extra sets of eyes and ears. Thnx.

As we enter the season of Advent, I do want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Vivat Jesus! Until the next time, Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, and Thank You for all you do in Riffel the name of the Knights of Columbus. Saskatchewan State Deputy

STATE CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE The Example of Joseph

Mary and Jesus are, of course, the proper focus of Christmas, but the season of Advent, which we now observe, is also the true time of St. Joseph. The Gospel for the Second Sunday proclaims that was sent to “Prepare the way of the Lord,” as Jesus began his public ministry, but the man who “prepared the way” for Jesus’ birth was Joseph. Just think of all he did and suffered to make sure that Mary was safe and the Child would find a home in the world. Strong and silent, obedient and resourceful, he is the embodiment of the “servant leadership” that Jesus would later preach saying, “He who would be great among you must be a servant of all” (Lk 22:26).

But if you look at all of the scripture that we will hear this Advent, you will notice that there is not one reference to the adopted father of Jesus until the Fourth Sunday, and even then it is a passing reference only stating that the angel was sent by God, “to a engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of .” Joseph is an important aspect of this Advent time, but he does so, as men often do, by standing in the background and doing the small duties that the leader of the household must do. And not a word from him is heard throughout the entire Gospel story. He is simply there, leading when needed, and stepping into the shadows when the time comes for the Son of God to shine.

What can this mean for us, especially fathers who have St. Joseph as a patron? May I recommend that we look for “Joseph moments” in our day-to-day lives? After all, chances are we are quite often offered opportunities to exercise the “servant leadership” of St. Joseph. A good place to start is to become familiar with God’s word in Scripture so that (Continued on page3 )

www.kofcsask.com Page 3 Saskatchewan Knightline Nov 2020

(Continued from page2 ) we will become accustomed to the tone of his promptings in our own lives. Thus, reading the Bible – especially the Gospels – is Step One in recognizing the “Joseph moments” in our lives. Here are some other suggestions:

2. If you find your wife or family in any danger, take well-considered and effective action, just as Joseph took the Holy Family to Egypt. The dangers you face may not include a mad King Herod, but be aware of the workload your wife may face at home, the pressures of childcare, the financial burdens of your family and even something as seemingly small as gossip about your family among in-laws. Stand up and present yourself as a defender of your wife and children.

3. Be a leader of the spiritual welfare of your family. It is amazing how attuned and attentive Joseph was to God’s angels, who appeared to him on three occasions commanding three huge tasks. As a father, don’t leave the religion to your wife. Your children will grow up thinking that faith is only feminine. Give them an example of faithful masculine leadership, which includes humility in the presence of God.

4. Be open to changing your plans for the sake of your family. Joseph may have imagined a normal marital and domestic life with his beloved bride. But he gave up all such dreams for the love of God and the love of Mary. Acknowledge the possibility that God’s plans for you and your family may be different from your plans.

May God Bless you and keep you safe. Fr. Edward Gibney State Chaplain

www.kofcsask.com Page 7 Saskatchewan Knightline Nov 2020 Membership Retention - Keeping Members Interested The key to success in any council is keeping members interested, excited and active. One way you can do this is by encouraging members to participate fully in council activities. Here are some of the ways to show interest in new and established members alike and to help them become active participants in the council: Note: Some of the ideas mentioned can be held only after Covid is under control.  Telephone members and remind them of meetings.  Offer to provide transportation to members that need rides who would like to attend council functions.  Answer questions. Members will ask why council activities are done in a certain way and if things can be changed. Provide them with sufficient information.  Inquire about the particular interests of the members through membership surveys.  Help new members make new friends in the council by introducing them to all fellow Knights.  Be aware of personality conflicts and try to avoid them as much as possible.  Do all you can to help members feel important to the council. Get members' names in the council's newsletter.  Recognize Knights birthdays, anniversaries and important sacramental events for families.  Manage your council roster for all members, particularly “At Risk” members.  Implement the “Shining Armor Award” and the “VIP Club” for all members  Use the mentorship program for new Knights and for “At-Risk Knights”.  Use the “Lecturer’s Program” to provide interesting topics at council meetings.  Keep meetings short and efficiently run.  Provide an opportunity for member’s feedback at meetings.  Conduct a variety of activities so that there is something of interest to all members of all ages.  Set up 3 or 4 teams of knights who take turns conducting projects. Form committees. (future officers)  Conduct events for times of fraternity such as council members family barbecues, Christmas supper and social, recognition evenings, movie and popcorn events, or knights/ ladies’ appreciation evening.  Regularly review the fraternal benefits pamphlet - #1267—Did You Know, #2761- Family Fraternal Benefits, #2773 - Member/Spouse Fraternal Benefits  Talk to the pastor to hold a “Celebration of Knighthood Sunday” in which the knights assist with all Mass ministries, Father speaks about the benefits of the knights in the parish, and a parish appreciation breakfast is held for all parishioners after Mass. Invite the SD, DD and Cluster leader. (After COVID ends)  Regular communication- emails, texts, council, state and supreme newsletters, phoning committee, parish bulletin, council pamphlet, bulletin boards, newspaper press releases, K of C photo gallery,  “Leave No Neighbor Behind” by regularly contacting members to see how they are doing.  Power Point-Develop A Retention Plan For Your Council - link  Member Retention Resources - link Establishing caring and concerned relationships among council membership will encourage your members to participate in council activities. By showing interest in new and old members alike, your council will confirm its commitment to members and will increase their willingness to assist in programs.

Brother Knights:

Just a reminder Brother Knights, we should get a phoning committee on each Council to call our Brother Knights to check in and see how their Families are doing and if the Council can provide anything for them. They may need something or some help with snow etc... Of course, we have to be very aware of Covid-19 restrictions. We should do this a few times a year just to check in as the members should hear from us more than just when it's dues time. Sometimes, just the contact is worth a few minutes of our time and makes all the difference to these Brother Knights.

We are coming close to Advent, so it is the perfect time to touch base and who knows, maybe they may have some members of their Family that would consider being a Knight.

We could tie this to the LNNB program and when complete, we could sit down with our Pastor and discuss the eligible candidates in the Parish and call them.

We have done this for the second time in our Council and the response has been excellent and much appreciated by all of our members. Some of these members, we have not seen for quite some time. We will call men from the Parish next!

On another note, Financial Secretaries should check the Members on Line - Prospect or Candidate tab for potential candidates that the Membership Team assigned to your Councils from the State Council #98058. Some of these men were anxious to get started with the Knights.

Also, Supreme is offering the top online recruiting State Council in each of the 6 divisions a 10% reduction in the COH quota from November 1st to Dec. 31st.

So I ask you Brother Knights, "What do we have to do and what can we do to give this an honest attempt at making this happen?" This would be good for everyone. This may be the last time we see free online memberships, so let's ask our Family members, our friends, and anyone we can think of to join the Knights of Columbus. Remember, "Their success tomorrow depends on our support today." Please Use code McGivney2020 for the free membership.

Agent of the Month October 2020

Blair Carruthers

“We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant, Fr. Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will.” How many tens of millions, hundreds of millions of times has our loving God heard this sentence from the prayer for Fr. McGivney’s ? Asking only to fulfill God’s holy will; requested humbly. No doubt, you, like I, have been saying this prayer of supplication for years. Now those prayers have been answered as our Venerable Founder becomes our Blessed Founder. The journey began December 18, 1997, when the Cause for Sainthood was opened in Hartford, Connecticut by Archbishop Daniel Cronin. Nearly five years later the official document, the Positio, outlining the case for Fr. McGivney’s cause was sent to Rome. On March 15, 2008, Fr. McGivney was declared “Venerable” indicating he lived a life of heroic virtue. This year on May 27, nearly twenty-three years after his cause was opened, Francis authorized a decree that a miracle attributed to Fr. McGivney’s intercession has been approved.

October 2020 will long be remembered as the month Fr. McGivney’s beatification Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford. It is currently scheduled for October 31. This will be a time of great joy and happiness for all members of the Knights of Columbus.

Spotlighting our founder and his reasons for founding the Order; i.e., to strengthen men in their faith and to provide for the financial needs of families overwhelmed by illness or death of the breadwinner, this spotlight will draw more Catholic men to join with us. Our Order is an immense force for good in this world with the billions of dollars donated to Blessed Fr. McGivney worthy causes over the past decade, strengthening our fraternal bonds with acts of Pray for Us charity. The Knights of Columbus helps us, husbands and fathers, not only fortify our faith but also provides an opportunity for us to protect our families. Is it significant that the approved miracle involved the son of one of our general agents from our insurance

program?

I like to think so. When Patrick McGivney died unexpectedly, young Michael had to leave the seminary to help provide for his family. He and his family struggled through the loss of his father and then as the curate at St. Mary’s he saw parishioners facing similar situations. He saw a need and he took action. He organized; he led, he inspired. He was concerned with both the spiritual and the temporal well-being of those around him. Speaking of being a man of action, now is the time for you to take action: You will soon Mark Lewans receive if you have not yet already received it, the 2020 Fraternal Survey. It may be filled General Agent out in paper form or online. Whether on paper or online, please take a minute to 306-949-0270 complete it. It will be prefilled with much of your information to make it a snap to [email protected] complete. It will provide information that will help me serve you better. There is a very www.kofcinsurancesk.ca (Continued on page12 )

www.kofcsask.com Nov 2020 Saskatchewan Knightline Page 12 informative insert included in the survey packet. Please take a minute to review that, too.

I consider it a worthy calling to carry on the work of our soon to be Blessed Founder. It’s been my great pleasure to work with many of you to help you protect your family and I look forward to continuing to serve you. Please call me if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks to you for all the good works you carry out in the name of the Order. Your acts of charity are even more critical considering this current pandemic. Thank you for all you do!

State Family Director’s Report I hope all is well with all our Worthy Grand Knight’s and Financial Secretaries of all our Councils in Saskatchewan. We as a Catholic Family Fraternal organization have almost hit the second half of our Columbian Year.

I would like to mention that as a Catholic Family Fraternal Organization we need to continue to recognize the great works of our members and fellow parishioners for their great works that they do for not only their families but also in our Parish families and our communities.

I mention this because there is a program in the Family list of Programs that recognize the works of the family. It is the Family of the Month/Year. This program helps your Council show your appreciation to the families and their members that we do see what they are doing in your Parishes and communities. This program promotes and supports the development of strong and vibrant families. So far during this current Columbian Year, we have only one Council in all of Saskatchewan doing this program and they have been getting recognized by Supreme for the past few months. This Council which is my home Council Yorkton Council #2031 who have taken on this program with a sense of showing how much they as not only a Council but Parish organization that many families who have been the unsung heroes of our parish need to be given the recognition that they need to be applauded for.

This is a simple program to do. Talk to you Council Chaplain or Parish Priest and set up a committee that includes your Grand Knight, Council Family Director and members from the Parish to nominate a worthy family. It takes on a few minutes to recognize the potential Family of the Month/Year.

You can get more information by going to the Supreme Office website link www.kofc.org/familyofthemonth to get all the resources you need for this program.

Your nominating family does not need to be a member and his family of your Council they could be a member of your Parish. What better way to find a potential new Knight and Family into your Council?

Another Humble Servant, Jeff Krasowski– State Family Director

Persecuted Christians Director Report

Nadeem Bhatti was born in a Catholic family in a village called Khushpur in the Islamic Republic of . He struggled against unjust laws that had been imposed on religious , to kill, persecute, attack, through misusing of Blasphemy laws Penal Code 295-C. Together with his close relative Martyr Shahbaz, Bhatti in the late 80s, both incepted the platform Christian Liberation Front Pakistan (CLF) in 1990, who fought the legal fight to release the innocent Christians. Nadeem had also closely worked with the first elected Pakistani Catholic Bishop from his village to help in these cases. He brought to attention the lawmakers in the country the concerns of rapid cases of the accusation of religiously targeted Christians.

The blasphemy laws, for example, were being used to justify the oppression of the Christian minority by threatening defamation, imprisonment, death sentences, and the acquisition of properties. He became a voice for Christians who were unlawfully imprisoned and torched to death in police custody or in assassinated during court hearings.

Nadeem led the National Christian youth movement in Pakistan to create harmony and unity among Christian groups to combat mob attacks on Churches and Christian communities. Nadeem was physically attacked twice before he escaped religious persecution and sought refuge in Canada in 2008.

Since 2009, he has continued to voice awareness of the injustices being experienced by Christians in countries that restrict religious liberties in Canada. He has advocated for both well-known asylum seekers as well as many who never see their situations reach international media coverage. He has co-sponsored several Christian refugees from varied ethnic backgrounds and countries who chose to make Saskatchewan-Alberta their home for good. He brought to attention to faith groups the mistreatment and bias against Christian refugees bynon-Christian & United Nations representatives. He raised voice for Asia Bibi's release and filed Mercy Petition in the House of Commons in2012 through Member Parliament.

He never gave up his mission. Canadian Aid to Persecuted Christians (CAPC) was born out of the personal struggle and experience of Nadeem Bhatti, its’ founding member. Canadian Aid to Persecuted Christians (CAPC) was officially incorporated by Canada Revenue Agency, as a not-for-profit organization in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in September 2020. CAPC’s board members currently are all from the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta.

“I feel very proud of facing persecution and attacks. It's very clear in the gospel Mt 5:10 – Blessed are they that Nadeem Bhatti suffer persecution for justice’ sake, for theirs is the king- State Chairman - Persecuted Christians dom of heaven.”

GivingTuesday – the global day of giving

Join us for the 8th annual GivingTuesday on December 1, 2020

GivingTuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday. The “Opening day of the giving season,” it’s a time when charities, companies and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community comes together for GivingTuesday.

Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation is asking this year for your generous gift to our Vocations Endowment.

The Sask K of C Vocations Endowment is established as a means of supporting a holistic sustainable approach to meeting the increasing need for leaders within our Church. The initial funding and growth of the Endowment will be achieved through a long-term partnership between the Saskatchewan RC Dioceses and Eparchy, Sask Knights of Columbus and the Saskatchewan Knights of Columbus Charitable Foundation.

An equal annual contribution will be made to each Seminarian from the Archdioceses, Dioceses, and Eparchy within Saskatchewan. The amount of the contribution will be determined by the earnings realized from the Endowment over the prior fiscal year.

The Sask K of C Charitable Foundation has made a commitment to ensure that each Seminarian will receive a minimum of $1,000.00 each year.

It is understood that the initial mandate of the Sask K of C Vocations Endowment is to support Seminarian education and development.
