Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Carter also recently co-wrote and produced a new album for recording artist Audra Mae while putting the finishing touches on her own Southern Way of Life that hit the shelves last December. But that’s Queen Bey, who’s also assembled a gaggle of gay fans who are – you guessed it – crazy in love with her. Making Music Grow since 1975 Notations Fall/Winter 2010 Barbara and John LoFrumento Establish A Program to Assist Autistic Students ASCAP CEO John LoFrumento and his wife Barbara, have established The ASCAP Foundation Barbara and John LoFrumento Award to support music and music therapy programs for autistic learners. This award, which was recently presented to the Music Conservatory of Westchester Music Therapy Institute, will enable the Institute to expand its music therapy program and provide weekly music therapy sessions to special needs students in the Eastchester, NY school district. Students will have the opportunity to work with music educators on songwriting and instrumental instruction. Music therapy uses the power of music in a focused way to accomplish growth, learning, healing and change. Elements of music such as repetition, form, dynamics, tempo and rhythm specifically address the learning needs of children with autism creating an environment of attention, creativity and expression. The ASCAP Foundation Barbara and John LoFrumento Award will make it possible for the Institute to reach out to those in the community who might otherwise not have an opportunity to experience music and its healing abilities. For those children, music therapy will make a significant difference in Barbara and John LoFrumento their lives by addressing important areas including communication and language development, socialization, emotional development and self expression, as well as helping to develop their musical skills and talents. MultiMillion-selling singer Crystal Gayle has performed songs from a wide variety of genres during her award-studded career, but she has never devoted an album to classic country music. Until now. You Don’t Know Me is a collection that finds the acclaimed stylist exploring the songs of such country legends as George Jones, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens and Eddy Arnold. The album might come as a surprise to those who associate Crystal with an uptown sound that made her a star on both country and adult-contemporary pop charts. But she has known this repertoire of hardcore country standards all her life. “This wasn’t a stretch at all,” says Crystal. “These are songs I grew up singing. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time. “The songs on this album aren’t songs I sing in my concerts until recently. But they are very much a part of my history.” Each of the selections was chosen because it played a role in her musical development. Two of them point to the importance that her family had in bringing her to fame. You Don’t Know Me contains the first recorded trio vocal performance by Crystal with her singing sisters Loretta Lynn and Peggy Sue. As a versatile artist whose styles encompass a wide range of musical genres, Fortenberry is a performer with an equally expansive career. He served as the pianist and associate conductor for the Broadway musical Rocky, where he also received the inaugural “Ghostlight Award” as Best Musician on Broadway. Early in his career in New York, he became the musical director and onstage pianist for the long-running off- Broadway satirical revue Forbidden Broadway. Fortenberry made his Carnegie Hall debut as the pianist/conductor for legendary entertainer Eartha Kitt, and later returned to Carnegie Hall in concert with The Three Irish Tenors. He performed with singer Charlotte Church at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall and accompanied internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Frederica Von Stade at the White House. -

Lescure and Yep: Queering Aging: Dialectical Analysis of Mediated Representations Teaching Media Quarterly Volume 3, Edition 2 (Spring 2015): Queer Media Queering Aging: Dialectical Analysis of Mediated Representations of Sexuality Overview and Rationale With a focus on aging sexual minorities, a population often overlooked by both queer theory and mediated representations, this classroom activity invites students to critically examine the intersection of queerness and television. First, students will get a brief introduction to queer theory and dialectical thinking. Second, students will view the made-for-television HBO film Behind the Candelabra. Third, students will engage in a queer dialectical analysis of the intersection of queerness and aging in the TV program. Influenced by poststructuralism, critical theory, feminism, and cultural studies, queer theory provides an open theoretical system to view, understand, and analyze social relations (Berlant & Warner, 1995; Jagose, 1996; Yep, 2003). More specifically, queer theory is both a conceptual model and a set of analytical tools to deconstruct power relations (i.e., the ways power functions and operates in our relationships) and the violence of normativity (i.e., the potentially harmful effects of social norms on bodies, identities, and communities) (Yep & Schönfeldt-Aultman, 2012).
