Among the authors, Jan Długosz, Wawrzyniec Korwin, Jan z Głogowa, Maciej z Miechowa (Miechowita), Bernard Wapowski and Marcin Kromer should be mentioned. 1 RICHARD BUTTERWICK-PAWLIKOWSKI (School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London) A DIALOGUE OF REPUBLICANISM AND LIBERALISM: REGARDING ANNA GRZEŚKOWIAK-KRWAWICZ’S BOOK ON THE IDEA OF LIBERTY Regina Libertas1 is the magnificent culmination of the research that Profesor Anna Grześkowiak-Krwawicz has conducted for many years on Polish political thought in the eighteenth century. This research has already yielded numerous and valuable publications – books, articles, lectures and source-editions – some of which have appeared in English and French. As the author informs us, some of these earlier works have been reused in modified form in this book. Her deep knowledge of the field is reflected in the construction of the monograph. It is not divided by the criteria of political camps, social categories or – with one justified exception – period. The book consists of seven parts, of which four are divided into eleven chapters. This arrangement may sound complicated, but it does not in practice disturb the reader. It is precisely thought-out. The ‘heroine’ of the book is the concept of liberty, which is analysed from various perspectives and at several levels. With impressive ease and grace Grześkowiak-Krwawicz leaps from author to author, choosing telling quotations to illustrate her theses, without unnecessary repetitions. She wears her extraordinary erudition lightly, so that it neither overwhelms not intimidates the reader. The book is written in elegant and accessible Polish. The author subtly encourages the reader to ask questions, which she answers, inviting the next question in turn. This is a kind of dialogue between the author and the reader, whom the author treats as a companion in her journey into the past. -

Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500–1700 In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries Muscovy waged a costly struggle against the Crimean Khanate, the Ottoman Empire, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for control of the fertile steppe above the Black Sea. This was a region of great strategic and economic importance – arguably the pivot of Eurasia at the time. Yet, this crucial period in Russia’s history has, up until now, been neglected by historians. Brian L. Davies’s study provides an essential insight into the emergence of Russia as a great power. The long campaign took a great toll upon Russia’s population, economy, and institutions, and repeatedly frustrated or redefi ned Russian military and diplo- matic projects in the West. The struggle was every bit as important as Russia’s wars in northern and central Europe for driving the Russian state-building process, forcing military reform and shaping Russia’s visions of Empire. Warfare, State and Society on the Black Sea Steppe, 1500–1700 examines the course of this struggle and explains how Russia’s ultimate prevalence resulted from new strategies of military colonization in addition to improvements in army command-and-control, logistics, and tactics. Voltaire2 Abstract Socinians were members of the specific radical Reformation international religious group that was formed originally in Poland and in Transylvania in the XVIth century and went beyond the limited scope of the reform initiated by Luther or Calvin. At the roots of their religious doctrines was the Antitrinitarianism developed by Michael Servetus (1511-1553) and transplanted by Italian Humanists, as well as the social ideas borrowed initially from the Anabaptists and Moravian Brethren. They called themselves Christians or Brethren, hence Polish Brethren, also Minor Reformed Church. Their opponents labeled them after the old heresies as Sabellians, Samosatinians, Ebionites, Unitarians, and finally Arians. They were also known abroad as Socinians, after the Italian Faustus Socinus (1539-1604) (Fausto Sozzini, nephew of Lelio Sozzini) who at the end of the XVIth century became a prominent figure in the Raków Unitarian congregation for systematizing the doctrines of the Polish Brethren. Although the spirit of religious liberty was one of the elements of the Socinian doctrine, the persecution and coercion they met as a result of the Counter Reformation led them to formulate the most advanced ideas in the realm of human freedom and church-state relations. -

Interesującą i chyba obiektywną. Prawie pełną, bo obejmującą większość problemów, lecz nie szczegółową, wyjąwszy zasadniczą część książeczki– „przewodnik” po kraju– choć i tu przez szczegółowość rozumieć wypadnie charakter opisu, a nie kompletność informacji. Niezwykle poczytne w XVII i XVIII wieku, o czym świadczy poważna liczba wydań2, do- czekało się dziełko Starowolskiego przekładu na język polski w roku 1765. Dokonał go Win- centy Franciszek Gołębiowski. Kierował się w swym przedsięwzięciu być może tym, że w jego czasach, kiedy znajomość łaciny przestała już być tak powszechna, jak w wiekach po- przednich, oryginalny tekst Polonii mogli czytać tylko oświeceni. -
Apollo Korzeniowski's Poland and Muscovy
APOLLO KORZENIOWSKI’S POLAND AND MUSCOVY Jerzy Zdrada The Jagiellonian University, Cracow Apollo Korzeniowski’s treatise entitled Poland and Muscovy has escaped the attention of scholars writing about the attitudes of Poles towards Russia in the post-partition era; to date only general summaries of the work have appeared in biographical notes on this “forgotten poet”. Presenting the essential idea of Korzeniowski’s “treatise-cum-memoir”, Czesław Miłosz rightly warns us against the rash tendency to ascribe nationalism to its author.1 In his turn, Roman Taborski, while granting the work “some documentary value”, defi nes it as “a sad testimony to a loss of perspicacity in this writer, who used to be so discerning in evaluating social phenomena”, adding that the treatise is “a historiosophic study which is imbued with extreme national chauvinism and continues the traditions of messianist ideology” by idealising Poland’s historical past and vilifying the Russian nation.2 In his pithy observation, Zdzisław Najder aptly emphasises the fact that “this embittered disquisition […] deals, in passionate tones, with Russo-Polish relations from the time of the fi rst partition” and with Russia’s place in Europe. Korzeniowski, Najder adds, shows Russia against the historical background of “a struggle between barbarism and civilization” as “a contemporary embodiment of Asiatic, Tartar, and Byzantine bar- barism”, thus accusing Western Europe of a “cowardly or naive attitude towards Russia”.3 However true these views may seem, they fail to do adequate justice to the con- tent, the character and the aim of Korzeniowski’s Poland and Muscovy. Initially associated with a political organization (“Solidarity Tucson”), which actively supported the Solidarity Movement throughout the 1980s, the Polish diaspora has gradually transformed into an ethnic community very much focused on maintaining its distinctive heritage. Recent formation of the Polish folkloric dance group Lajkonik was directly stimulated by the local multicultural establishment, which promotes ethnic diversity in the Old Pueblo. Having become an integral part of the Southwestern society, Lajkonik has developed a collection of identity practices, which despite diverse influences continues to reproduce Polish cultural traits. In my ethnographic account, I examine ways, by which members of the Lajkonik group construct their diasporic identities. First, I focus on the core activities of the group, which include the practice of Polish traditions, learning folk dances and songs in a wide cultural context, and negotiating the speaking of Polish. Additional analyses, based on video recordings, of Polish classes and dance rehearsals, which show the actual mechanics of the production processes, as well as the narratives of the teacher and parent of performers, further support the account of the ethnographer. -

British perceptions of Poland-Lithuania in the long seventeenth century by Martyna Mirecka Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of History University of St Andrews September 2013 Abstract Early modern Poland-Lithuania figured significantly in the political perceptions of Europeans in the long seventeenth century – not only due to its considerable size and enormous commercial and military resources, but also, and just as importantly, due to its exceptional religious and political situation. This interest in Poland-Lithuania was shared by many Britons. However, a detailed examination of how Britons perceived Poland-Lithuania at that time and how they treated Poland-Lithuania in their political debates has never been undertaken. This thesis utilises a wide range of the previously neglected source material and considers the patterns of transmission of information to determine Britons’ awareness of Poland-Lithuania and their employment of the Polish-Lithuanian example in the British political discourse during the seventeenth century. It looks at a variety of geographical and historical information, English and Latin descriptions of Poland-Lithuania’s physical topography and boundaries, and its ethnic and cultural make-up presented in histories, atlases and maps, to establish what, where and who Poland-Lithuania was for Britons. -

The paper deliberately stops in the 1870s in the selec- tion of the literary material to be analysed, focusing on the Romantic and post-Ro- mantic tradition. Due to the different artistic value of the works, the author adopted the formula of a historical and literary “catalogue” ordered chronologically and partly problematicised according to the functions which Venetian scenery or cul- ture perform in them. Attention is drawn to the fact that Venetian motifs present in the poetry of Polish artists tend to be related to particular phenomena and topics, such as Byronism, Gothicism, political and national camouflage, love and existen- tial masks, conflict between people and power. Discourses on the Armenian Diaspora Acta Poloniae Historica 116, 2017 PL ISSN 0001–6829 Alexandr Osipian Taras Ševčenko National University of Kyiv BETWEEN MERCANTILISM, ORIENTAL LUXURY, AND THE OTTOMAN THREAT: DISCOURSES ON THE ARMENIAN DIASPORA IN THE EARLY MODERN KINGDOM OF POLAND*1 Abstract This paper analyses the attitudes toward the Armenian Diaspora in early modern Polish society through a close examination of the issues viewed as burning by the contemporaries. The paper is focused on three such burning topics – a) the ‘price revolution’ and, in connection therewith, mercantilism; b) the growing level of consumption (“redundant luxury” – zbytek nierozmyślny) and the fears of social disorder aroused by it; and c) the Ottoman threat (real and imagined). The paper argues that there were a variety of discourses on the Armenians because the dis- courses were infl uenced by the different answers to the challenging issues presented by the representatives of various social estates – noblemen (szlachta), clergymen (duchowieństwo) and burghers (mieszczaństwo). Therefore, the attitudes to the Mono- physite Armenians in Polish society were mostly shaped not as part of the Coun- ter-Reformation agenda (as was the case with respect to Protestants and the Greek- Orthodox), but rather within the framework of economic (mercantilism), social (consumption), and psychological/political (fears of the Ottoman threat) issues. The paper deliberately avoids the present-day concepts of tolerance and intoler- ance, which are considered as irrelevant in this case. -
