Thank You For Supporting Our Veterans From the Sahara Hotel and Casino’s “PLATTERS-COASTERS-DRIFTERS” salute ten-year run, in Las Vegas, Myles Savage lead singer from those “LAST ORIGINAL STARS” truly rocked the house receiving a roaring standing ovation after giving a spell-bounding rendition of “Smoke Gets In your Eyes”. At last Saturday’s sold-out concert in Sydney, Australia, the Capitol Theatre crowd shouted for more, so Ramone Noble lead singer from the Drifters gave them a super soulful rendition of “Stand By Me” using his heavenly gifted enharmonic singing style like a vocal acrobat. Early Clover from the Cornell Gunter Coasters grabbed “Charlie Brown” right off the first row of the audience and gave him some advice about “Poison Ivy” then he sold Charlie Brown a bottle of “Love Potion # 9”. While singing “Unchained Melody” Myles Savage stole the hearts of the ladies and had everyone in the theater slow dancing, revisiting their high school prom night. Many dancing couples were crying. One lady stood up but she could not find a partner, so Myles walked off the stage and danced with her while he sang “ Only You” to her. It was a very heartfelt and happy evening. Again, the crowd rose out of their seats with another thunderous round of applause, stomping their feet. One lady said, “It’s like we’re at the Apollo Theater in New York City for a reunion of all these great Rock & Roll Hall of Fame groups. They make me feel like I’m 16 years old again. The ‘LAST ORIGINAL STARS’ are the real deal!! Most people have never seen anything like this in concert. It’s off the charts, baby! Like the Ink Spots a decade earlier, they were the most popular black group of their time, achieving success in a crooning, middle-of-the-road style that put a soulful coat of uptown polish on pop-oriented, harmony-rich material. Their lengthy string of hits began in 1955 with “Only You” and continued until the end of the decade, including four singles that reached Number One : “The Great Pretender,” “My Prayer,” “Twilight Time” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” The secret of the Platters’ success had to do with their choice of material: adult ballads and standards that predated the rock and roll era and delivered with crisp, impeccable harmonies framed by string-laden arrangements. Much of the credit is due to Buck Ram, the group’s producer, manager and guiding light, who had worked with acts like the Ink Spots in the Forties. The group got its start in Los Angeles in 1952. The original lineup included Alex Hodge, Cornell Gunter, David Lynch, Joe Jefferson, Gaynel Hodge and Herb Reed. Reed is credited with creating the group’s name. In June 1953, Gunter was replaced by Tony Williams, and Jefferson was no longer in the group.

A weekly four column publication printed every Friday, Freedom’s Journal was founded by free born African Americans John Russwurm and Samuel Cornish on March 16, 1827 in New York City, New York. The newspaper contained both foreign and domestic news, editorials, biographies, births and deaths in the local African American community, and advertisements. Editorials deriding slavery, racial discrimination, and other injustices against African Americans were aimed at providing a counterweight to many of the white newspapers of the time period which openly supported slavery and racial bias. Freedom’s Journal was not born solely out of the perceived need to defend African Americans as much as a desire within the black community to create a forum that would express their views and advocate for their causes. Russwurm and Cornish placed great value on the need for reading and writing as keys to empowerment for the black population and they hoped a black newspaper would encourage literacy and intellectual development among African Americans. Relatedly the newspaper sought to broaden its readers’ awareness of world events and developments while simultaneously strengthening ties among black communities across the Northern United States. Subscriptions were $3 per year and Freedom’s Journal at its peak circulated in eleven states, the District of Columbia, Haiti, Europe, and Canada.
