    37_Racing Pigeons.qxd 8/24/2005 9:46 AM Page 849 CHAPTER 37 Management of Racing Pigeons JAN HOOIMEIJER, DVM Open flock management, which is used in racing pigeon medicine, assumes the individual pigeon is less impor- tant than the flock as a whole, even if that individual is monetarily very valuable. The goal when dealing with rac- ing pigeons is to create an overall healthy flock com- posed of viable individuals. This maximizes performance and profit. Under ideal circumstances, problems are pre- vented and infectious diseases are controlled. In contrast, poultry and (parrot) aviculture medicine is based on the principles of the closed flock concept. With this concept, prevention of disease relies on testing, vaccinating and a strict quarantine protocol — measures that are not inte- gral to racing pigeon management. This difference is due to the very nature of the sport of pigeon racing; contact among different pigeon lofts (pigeon houses) constantly occurs. Every week during the racing season, pigeons travel — confined with thou- sands of other pigeons in special trucks — to the release site. Pigeons from different lofts are put together in bas- kets. Confused pigeons frequently enter a strange loft. In addition, training birds may come into contact with wild birds during daily flight sessions. Thus, there is no way to prevent exposure to contagious diseases within the pop- ulation or to maintain a closed flock. The pigeon fancier also must be aware that once a disease is symptomatic, the contagious peak has often already occurred, so pre- ventive treatment is too late. Treatment at this point may be limited to minimizing morbidity and mortality.

    RE-ESTABLISHING OF EXTINCT BREEDS: THE HORSEMAN POUTER By: Axel Sell (Germany) Photo: Sytze de Bruine In the last decades some pigeon breeds that were extinct and only known from literature got a great revival. One of these breeds is the Pouting Horseman. The breed was still mentioned by WILLUGHBY 1676 as light horseman and as a cross- breed of the carrier and a pouter. The carrier was described as a medium sized pigeon with wattles at beak and eye ceres and may be considered a variant of the Turkish pigeon. This information is also given by ALBIN 1731-1738. MOORE 1735 preferred the idea of a cross between a carrier-like bird and a pouter. Both praise the ability "to pitch stray Pigeon that are at a Loss to find their own Home" (MOORE, p. 38). The Carrier-like pigeon from MOORE was describes as a second and different 'horseman'. This horseman resembles the carrier but is smaller in all its properties. According to MOORE it was a matter of dispute at his time whether it was an original breed or a bastard between a carrier and a tumbler or even a carrier and a pouter. For LEVI (1969, §74) with reference to other historical sources it was more probable that the horseman was nothing else than the ancestor of an improved carrier. In modern language we could say that the horseman was the old-fashioned carrier and Moore's highly esteemed carrier the modern carrier of the 1730s. For the author of these line it seems presumably that MOORE and his friends were so convinced that the carrier was of such an outstanding character that they could not believe in such a poor ancestry.

Harborough District Council are encouraging parish councils to put in place Community Response Plans in the event of an incident such as severe weather. Tur Langton Parish Council has theirs and East Langton Parish Council’s is nearly completed (see p 7). The plan provides a guide as to how and where the local community may support the Emergency services in terms of information and providing predetermined resources where appropriate. Predominantly a rhythm instrument at the turn of the century, the guitar began to step out of the rhythm section in the 1930’s and 40’s and has maintained a dominant presence in every form of music from rock, to folk, to country, bluegrass, blues, and old- time. While Elvis, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and other pop icons of the 50’s and 60’s certainly played a large role in bolstering the guitar’s popularity, the man who has had the deepest, most enduring, and most profound influence on the way the acoustic flat top guitar is played as a lead instrument in folk, old-time, and bluegrass music today is Arthel "Doc" Watson. To those of us who have spent hundreds of hours slowing down Doc Watson records in order to learn the tastefully selected notes that he plays and emulate the clear, crisp tone he pulls out of his instrument, Doc is a legend. However, Doc’s influence extends far beyond the small niche of guitar players who try to faithfully reproduce his guitar breaks because Doc Watson is not just a guitar player and singer - he is an American hero. To be recognized as a "national treasure" by President Jimmy Carter, honored with the National Medal of the Arts by President Bill Clinton, and given an honorary doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina calls for being more than a fine musician and entertainer.
