    RIAA 2018 YEAR-END LATIN MUSIC REVENUE REPORT LATIN MUSIC IS EXPERIENCING A RENAISSANCE. STREAMING HAS BROKEN DOWN GEOGRAPHIC AND GENRE BARRIERS, RESULTING IN LATIN MUSIC REACHING NEW AUDIENCES AT THE TOUCH OF A FINGER. The story behind this recovery starts with great music: J Balvin, Daddy Yankee, Karol G, Ozuna, Rosalia, Luis Miguel, Bad Bunny, Sofia Reyes, and so many other talented artists who released music in 2018 helped fuel the second year of double-digit growth in the U.S. Latin music market. Any conversation about the Latin music market starts with one word: streaming. Latin music’s transformation from a physical-based business to a streaming- driven one is even faster than the overall U.S. music market’s turnaround. Revenues from streaming now comprise 93% of the total Latin market, with paid subscription services fueling most of the growth. But there are inherent challenges for any market where fans have a heavier reliance on free, ad-supported services – an area that has not yet reached its full potential due to the efforts by some platforms to drive down the value of music. The tour, produced by Live Nation, will feature many of her catalog hits and kicks off on November 8th in Cologne, Germany. It will feature stops throughout Europe and the US including Paris’ AccorHotels Arena and New York’s Madison Square Garden. The first step—your research proposal—is explained below. Before you can write a proposal, though, you need to have an idea what a finished project might look like. Let’s check out this summary of a past undergraduate student paper. Weapons of Western Civilization Does first-hand • IMAGE SEARCH RESULTS – from two different search analysis of these engines, one US-based, one China-based, for a small set of primary media revealing key terms. Student looks at how these results depict sources (A) skewed visions of beauty and professionalism, and how the ways they are skewed match historic inequalities. Puts their analysis in • The global history of colorism. conversation with • Chinese beauty standards. secondary scholarly • The centrality of search engines for contemporary knowledge sources (B) on... formation. • How algorithms work and are part of Web 2.0 phase of internet culture. Thesis By testing the world’s two leading search engines, Baidu and Google, using the same set of search words (i.e. “beautiful woman,” “business man,” and “professional women”) I found that billions are exposed via the search engines’ algorithms to something much more sinister than “best results.” Instead, these search engines consistently reinforce colorism and inequality. As you can see, an original research project is built using (A) primary and (B) secondary sources. In other words, in light of what you learn reading (B) secondary scholarly sources, you will do hands-on analysis of (A) your media phenomenon.

    Lund University, Centre for Languages and Literature Johanna Hagner (2019) Master’s Thesis, 15 credits Master of Arts in Language and Linguistics ¿Fiera salvaje o flan de coco? — un estudio sobre la construcción metafórica de género en letras de reguetón común y feminista A Wild Beast or a Sweet Dessert? — a study on metaphorical construction of gender in mainstream and feminist reggaeton lyrics Supervisor: Carlos Henderson Examinator: Jordan Zlatev Resumen La presente investigación examina el papel de la metáfora dentro de la construcción de femineidad, masculinidad y sexualidad en las letras del género musical reguetón. Basándose en un corpus representativo del contenido lírico de, por una parte, el reguetón común y, por otra parte, la corriente de reguetón feminista, el estudio toma una perspectiva interdisciplinaria combinando la lingüística cognitiva, el Análisis Crítico del Discurso y la perspectiva de género en su análisis. La tesis arguye que las metáforas animales y las metáforas gastronómicas desempeñan un papel significativo en la transmisión de ideas de género en las letras investigadas. Se sostiene que en el reguetón común, estas metáforas tienden a tener un enfoque en la mujer y en el aspecto físico y seductivo de la femineidad. El reguetón feminista, por su parte, se caracteriza por más variedad en sus conceptualizaciones. En este grupo de material, la interacción seductiva también juega un rol importante; no obstante, el autorretrato femenino y la resistencia a las normas heterosexuales y patriarcales llevan un enfoque mayor. Asimismo, se destaca que en la construcción metafórica del amor homosexual entre mujeres, el reguetón feminista tiende a tener más similitudes con la conceptualización del reguetón común.

    June 18th, 2019 Songwriters in the Round NEWSLETTER A n E n t e r t a i n m e n t I n d u s t r y O r g a n i z a t i on President’s Corner Dear Friends and Members, Our next panel discussion, “Songwriters in the Round,” is set for June 18th at The Federal in North Hollywood. Please note the different venue and the lower price. I am excited to wrap up this season by co-moderating this panel with the amazing, Mara Schwartz Kuge! We take a vacation in the month of July, but next up is our Second Annual Summer Networking Mixer at the Palihouse in West Hollywood on August 27th. Come join us for an entire evening of networking. Bring plenty of business cards and register early—you don’t want to miss this one! Lastly, please join me in thanking our 2018–2019 Board of Directors. These amazing women and men sacrifice so much of their time and energy to ensure that all of the CCC activities are planned and executed without a hitch. Some of their accomplishments are: • Amazing panel discussions with relevant content. • New format that enables the meetings to end promptly at 9pm. • Extended season that now runs from August–June. • New banking partner that offered more favorable rates and lower fees. • The Scholarship Fund is now an official 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization. • Producing another rousing Apollo-Award Holiday bash.
