General Points:

- Generally, I have spent the past 12 months supporting both unform and non-unform members in achieving the best that they can in their respective roles. - I’ve consolidated my scout learning by attending courses / training and events and feel more confident in my scouting knowledge and ability to perform in the Group Leader position. - There is no doubt that 2020 was a difficult year and I did lose a leader due to the stress of potential exposure to COVID. - I have THE BEST team, but they are doing this pretty much single handedly and I fear that they will burn out and leave. You as parents can make a huge difference by small actions. - My focus for 2021/22 is get the program embedded into individual unit programs by providing training and support to leaders, terrain supporters and youth/parents. - My other focus to apply for grants to continue to improve the facilities of the Hall of Australia - New South Wales Branch NSW Formation: 2 Northmead Annual Report for the Year Ended 31st December 2020

Discussion Points:

The Joey unit has had a great year since returning from the COVID-19 initiated break. Since returning we have slowly been building up our Joey numbers and beginning to experiment with the new Youth Program.

Its been 2 full terms since the resumption of the Joey Unit and in that time, the Joeys have had some highlights and some great achievements.

Some highlights include:

• Pitching the scout tents with limited adult assistance

• Striking a match for the first time • Learning and mastering the clove hitch knot • Participated in community service in our own ‘Clean Up Northmead’ along with official representation in CUAD 2021 • Visited Lake Parramatta to achieve Outdoor aquatic skills • Visited the local park to participate in team sports – many for the first time. • Our Patrol leaders have taken the lead in games such as the popular ‘octopus’ game. • Enjoyed a mixture of craft, reading and sporty activities on our regular meets

2. Target Badges

• The Joey Units are working on their Milestone level 1s in Campcraft, Bush craft and outdoor skills.

3. New Youth Program

• All Northmead leaders participated in the Youth Program upskill training in October 2020 and we have since gone live on the new program in term 1 2021.

• The Joey units have been shown Terrain and parents communicated with information on how to log in and navigate the site – however more is needed as Joeys will need the full support of parents and carers to take full advantage of the tool.

This will be a focus area for term 3

4. Major Activities (upcoming)

• Anzac Day (Driveway Service.) .

5. Leader Training.

Matthew Gnezdiloff will need to resume active training

6. WHS No WHS issues to report.

7. General Business.

Leaders needed. The Unit still needs more leaders. This has obvious implications for growing the group as I am reluctant to expand the ground without the corresponding growth in leaders. I would encourage parents who are hesitant to join on as leaders to consider actively becoming parent helpers to ensure the nights are run smoothly and to contribute if possible to programming to ensure we are leveraging the New Youth Program as much as possible

A huge thank you to Mark and Louise & Sarah for the constant support in this regard.

Equipment Required.

I would love to see the addition of Slackers outdoor gear for kids in the Joey section as I think this is

precisely the equipment that makes scouting fun, adventurous and inclusive

Other Comments.

Its been an honour to continue to service the Joey Unit. The Joeys have formed a strong bond amongst each other and seem genuinely excited to work and play together each Monday night. I’ve really enjoyed being involved in the games and activities and I am constantly impressed by the outsized abilities of our joeys for their young years.

However, I would also like input from parents on how they are progressing with their Joeys on their personal goals and special interest areas so we can support their endeavours on a Monday night. I would also encourage parents with a Facebook account to join our private group to witness their Joey in action.

NOTEABLE THINGS

o Our number dropped in 2021 due to a number or cubs moving to scouts, but this has not been a bad thing. o We had a great bike ride in March, attended by other packs, and was a great activity o Struggling with the new program, but the assistance of Ruth Almond has been fantastic help. o We gave out a grey wolf badge at the end of 2020 to Abbey and in March to Violet.

1. badgework

• Thank you to Ruth, Alexander’s Mum, for helping out with entering badgework into Terrain.

• struggling to get our heads around the new program so will focus on badgework heavier in term 2 2021

2. New Youth Program

All Northmead leaders participated in the Youth Program upskill training in October 2020 and we have since gone live on the new program in term 1 2021.

Existing badgework has been mapped across and the new badges are being distributed for sewing onto the uniforms.

So far we have been gently easing into the new program but it has began to become obvious more training will need to be given to the youth on how to log in, record and manage their own progress through the online terrain program.

This will be a focus area for term 2.

3. Major Activities (upcoming)

• Jamborette for cubs aged 10 and over

Despite Covid over the previous 12 months we have had some continuing successes, o Overall in the last 12 months we have seen 4 x ASMs being awarded (Eddie, Thomas, Evie and Matilda) o Matilda undertook her Green Cord hike in Feb/March 2020 o Evie held her ASM construction camp in March 2020. o Matilda held her ASM Scouting Skills fun camp in October 2020.

We have also had several very successful fun evenings including trips to Parramatta Gaol for a Ghost and history tour, Indoor Rock Climbing, Laser Tag nights and our Christmas party where we went for both laser tag and ten pin bowling.

The unit morale is good with Scouts having a positive outlook towards 2021 and beyond. Several upcoming camps recently been confirmed as going ahead including. - GWS Jamborette (June Long Weekend) - Camp Courage (July School Holidays) - State Rally (First Weekend in August) - District Comp Camp - NSW Jamboree (January 2022)

Scouts have also began participating in Region Activities such as the region sailing course and Level 3 abseiling courses.

We are looking forward to building up to a full and rewarding calendar.

2. Target Badges/ASMs

• Matilda Glanville completed her ASM award. • Ben A & Zac G completed their Pioneer Target award and Red Cord

3. New Youth Program

All Northmead leaders participated in the Youth Program upskill training in October 2020 and we have since gone live on the new program in term 1 2021.

A HUGE thankyou to Ida – Greg’s Mum for agreeing to help be our terrain Champion!!

Existing badgework has been mapped across and the new badges are being distributed for sewing onto the uniforms.

So far we have been gently easing into the new program but it has began to become obvious more training will need to be given to the youth on how to log in, record and manage their own progress through the online terrain program.

4. Major Activities 2020

• Anzac Day (Kerbside event.) • District First Aid Course held at Northmead Scout Hall • District Leadership Course. (Ben and Zac).

District, region and state overnight camps cancelled due to covid-19 concerns.

5. Major Activities 2021 • Anzac Day (Parade Ground.) • District First Aid Course held at Northmead Scout Hall • District Leadership Course. (Harrison, Xavier and Greg registered). • District / Regional Events/ Camps (as outlined in point 1).

6. Leader Training.

- Steve Glanville (SL) 241504  Completed Wood Badge in Scouts.  Completed CS Leader training  Completed Venturer Leader training.  Completed all available new training units  WWCC Updated  Completed first aid course

- Mark Atkinson (TSL) 1100444  Completed E-Basic Core.  Completed first aid course  Currently finalising training.

7. WHS No WHS issues to report.

8. General Business.

Leaders needed. The Unit still needs more leaders. Mark Atkinson is a shift worker and can not be available every unit night or weekend. Given the short notice of his working roster it also makes it hard to plan weekend events into the future.

Louise has generously been filling in but given her role as Group Leader this is not sustainable.

SG will also be resigning once Brydan moved to venturers or resigns from Scouting by 2024.

Equipment Required. Currently we have enough equipment for activities however as the troop grows above 20 Scouts additional equipment may be required. Primarily larger tents, Portable BBQs etc.

Other Comments. I personally have been disappointed in the level of parent involvement at 2nd Northmead Scout Group. We consistently only see the same volunteers at all events.

This is very disheartening as a leader and drives leader morale down to feel that we as volunteers are being expected to do everything with no help from the parents of those children whom we volunteer our time for and may soon lead to leader resignations.
