He produced his art not only for the sake of art but also to change the world towards a better life and to get rid of social and political vices. His fundamental aim in his plays is bettering the lot of humanity by subjecting accepted connections and institutions to the cold, searching light of his penetrating intellect. All his plays are about some important aspect of contemporary social life or some important social evil. Shaw read Karl Marx whose writings influenced him very much. He was eager to reform English society. He was gaining the recognition of the type of audience that he wanted to attract to the theatre. He began writing for the theatre. He was greatly influenced by the social plays of Ibsen. Shaw was essentially a comic dramatist while Ibsen was tragic. Shaw called himself a rationalist, a realist and an anti-romantic. He was against all shams, affectations and false conventions. He is against all romantic outburst of emotion and sentiment. G.B. Shaw considers poverty is an evil. He scorns capitalism and advocates socialism. As a socialist, he thinks about the problem of family, love, marriage and se-relations. Shaw objects to marriage and family because these institutions are based on false economics and false biology. As a biologist, he thinks that procreation is the most sacred work of all, and as a socialist he demands that all work should be suitably paid for.

    PYGMALION LIFE OF THE AUTHOR It is with good reason that Archibald Henderson, official biographer of his subject, entitled his work George Bernard Shaw: Man of the Century. Well before his death at the age of ninety-four, this famous dramatist and critic had become an institution. Among the literate, no set of initials were more widely known than G.B.S. Born on July 26, 1856, in Dublin, Ireland, Shaw survived until November 2, 1950. His ninetieth birthday in 1946 was the occasion for an international celebration, the grand old man being presented with a festschrift entitled GBS 90 to which many distinguished writers contributed. A London publishing firm bought space in the Times to voice its greetings: GBS Hail to thee, blithe spirit! Shaw was the third child and only son in a family which he once described as “shabby but genteel.” His father, George Carr Shaw, was employed as a civil servant and later became a not too successful merchant. Shaw remembered especially his father’s “alcoholic antics”; the old man was a remorseful yet unregenerate drinker. It was from his father that Shaw inherited his superb comic gift. Lucinda Gurley Shaw, the mother, was a gifted singer and music teacher; she led her son to develop a passion for music, particularly operatic music. At an early age he had memorized, among others, the works of Mozart, whose fine workmanship he never ceased to admire. Somewhat later, he taught himself to play the piano—in the Shavian manner. The impact of Darwin’s ‘Origin of Species’ was widely seen in the works of contemporary writers. While Dickens presented the crude realities of society in a serious manner, Shaw, who wrote in the later part of the century, painted the gloomy picture in color. He ridiculed the follies of society by comparing the conventional notions with the idealistic ones. He dealt with numerous subjects like war, medicine, law, politics, prostitution, love, etc. but his approach towards these themes remained alien to the society. Love, for example, was considered divine and beautiful by writers and poets before Shaw, but he exposed the motive behind falling in love and the concept of Life Force in his plays. Introduction George Bernard Shaw appeared on the literary scene when a great change took place in English drama with the arrival of Ibsen on the English stage. The new shift towards various social problems given to English drama by the innovators like A. W. Pinero, T. W. Robertson, and Henry Arthur Jones received immense support from Ibsen, whose plays aroused great interest in England by the shocking novelty of their themes. Shaw, well known for his hawk-eyed observation, took notice of the new changes and most effectively expressed them through his creative and critical works. In this way, he began his career as an exponent of realism and as a determined inculcator of the play of ideas and became the first English dramatist to use the stage as a platform for social propaganda. Shaw strongly felt that the preoccupation of a dramatist was with the conflict between human feelings and circumstances, every social question furnishing material for drama. He was predominantly a socialist who only who only believed in equality as the sane, possible basis of social organization and manners. In this sense, Shaw was a rationalist as well. C.E.M. His plays are basically discussions on the mental reactions of people towards certain problems, and are therefore known as the problem plays. His aim in writing plays was not the story telling or entertaining an audience; rather, he wanted to draw the attention of people to various evils and problems prevailing in society. He considered females as the superior beings who help in the Creative Evolution by giving birth to children and thus supportthe Life Force as is presented in his play, Man and Superman. He did not have faith in the Christian religion as he felt that the teachings given by the Church were far away from the teachings given by Christ. His religious views have been presented in the play,Saint Joan. In Candida, Shaw presented the concept of New Woman who makes a sensible choice in between her husband and the young poet. In another play, Arms and the Man, he exposes the hollowness of romantic love and undue glorification of war.

He wished to give the women a self-assertive role in the community who were known as the ‘New Woman’. In his plays, Shaw alters the traditional concepts of women who were depicted as inferior to men physically, economically, morally, socially, and politically and also challenges the traditional notions of ‘Angel’ in the house and sexually voracious image. Shaw has reversed the qualities of a man and a woman which come traditionally from one generation to another generation and has presented woman having her own desires, passions, position, identity, and liberty in the society. So being influenced by the realistic and socialistic values of Henrik Ibsen, Bernard Shaw, in his plays, projects the female sensibility and emancipation of women through the concept of ‘New Woman’. In this paper, I throw light on the female world – their desires, self dignity, evolution, challenges through the concept of New Woman and their independent role in the society. They believe that the higher society could make them happier. Social mobility is a movement in the social structure, there are certain pattern which organizing the social group (Soekanto 2001: 68). According Kimball Young and Raymond W. Mack, social structure “is consists of the characteristics relation between an individual and their group” (in Soekanto 2001: 275). According to Horton (1980: 36), social mobility is the movement from a social class into another social class. The movement is marked by the structural change which is consists of the relation between an individual and their group. Both of individual mobility and group mobility have a social impact. It also has an impact in the structure alteration. The social mobility is more easily happen in the open society because it might allow for the levels movement (Kerbo 2003: 14). As the opposite, the closed society is harder to get the levels movement. It could be see in the feudal society, which is following the caste system. If there is someone who was born from low caste family, he would be in that caste forever from his entire life. He would not get the movement even if he is an expert. Lit2-F11 Beyond My Fair Lady: George Bernard Shaw and the Comedy-Drama of Ideas Leader Verne Vance TUESDAY - COURSE PERIOD 1 – 8:30 a.m. – 9:55 a.m. Description In this course we will examine the life, philosophy, and five of the plays of George Bernard Shaw, the most important British dramatist since Shakespeare and the first such dramatist to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. The plays we will read and discuss are: Man and Superman; Major Barbara; Heartbreak House; Saint Joan; and Pygmalion, which was the source for the musical My Fair Lady. Through this work, we will seek to understand how Shaw used his unique wit to create comedies that entertained while promoting his iconoclastic ideas on economics, politics, family relationships, and other matters. In the course we will view videos of material from the plays, and the students will participate in readings from them.
