OUR RICH HISTORY IS NOT FORGOTTEN: THE LCHS HISTORICAL MARKER PROGRAM Logan County has a rich and diverse history that rivals any of the other counties in Ohio. From prehistoric Paleo Indians who hunted the great mastodons that once roamed this area, to the Shawnee, Wyandot and other historic tribes that called it home, to the white settlement of the area, to its heyday as a railroad artery, to its Million Dollar Playground at Indian Lake, to the present, Logan County’s history has been one of immense interest and importance. The Historical Society has preserved and promoted Logan County’s history in many ways. One has been the historical marker program. The Society first began erecting the markers in the 1940s. Many of the early markers recognized the importance of historic Indians in Logan County’s past. Over the next several decades the Society erected many more markers commemorating important people, sites and events that affected Logan County’s history and development. The Society is continuing this practice today with new markers and replacing older ones that have been damaged or lost. The Historical Society is not the only entity that has celebrated the county’s history through markers. Several of the villages in Logan County have erected monuments for certain historical events or people in their past. The county also has a few markers that individuals or organizations have sponsored. These markers, like those of the Society, were erected to commemorate people, events, and sites that helped shape Logan County’s history. ZANE-KENTON MEMORIAL—Route 5 at south edge of Zanesfield. -

The Principal Indian Towns of Western Pennsylvania C. Hale Sipe One cannot travel far in Western Pennsylvania with- out passing the sites of Indian towns, Delaware, Shawnee and Seneca mostly, or being reminded of the Pennsylvania Indians by the beautiful names they gave to the mountains, streams and valleys where they roamed. In a future paper the writer will set forth the meaning of the names which the Indians gave to the mountains, valleys and streams of Western Pennsylvania; but the present paper is con- fined to a brief description of the principal Indian towns in the western part of the state. The writer has arranged these Indian towns in alphabetical order, as follows: Allaquippa's Town* This town, named for the Seneca, Queen Allaquippa, stood at the mouth of Chartier's Creek, where McKees Rocks now stands. In the Pennsylvania, Colonial Records, this stream is sometimes called "Allaquippa's River". The name "Allaquippa" means, as nearly as can be determined, "a hat", being likely a corruption of "alloquepi". This In- dian "Queen", who was visited by such noted characters as Conrad Weiser, Celoron and George Washington, had var- ious residences in the vicinity of the "Forks of the Ohio". In fact, there is good reason for thinking that at one time she lived right at the "Forks". When Washington met her while returning from his mission to the French, she was living where McKeesport now stands, having moved up from the Ohio to get farther away from the French. After Washington's surrender at Fort Necessity, July 4th, 1754, she and the other Indian inhabitants of the Ohio Val- ley friendly to the English, were taken to Aughwick, now Shirleysburg, where they were fed by the Colonial Author- ities of Pennsylvania. -

Appendix E Response to Comments WW-16J Re: Response to Public Comments - Comment Period ending March 27, 2004 Wabash River Watershed Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL), Ohio Dear Sir/Madam: Thank you for your recent comments regarding the Draft Wabash River Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) document dated February 2004. The U.S. EPA has responded to your comments below. We first address the comments related to designated use and then address all remaining comments. In 1999, Ohio EPA completed a thorough examination of habitat and biological and chemical conditions in the Wabash River watershed. Ohio EPA found that Wabash River watershed’s Warmwater Habitat use designation was still appropriate. Consequently, we used the nutrient and sediment targets associated with the Warmwater Habitat use designation in this TMDL.1 Comments from: Ohio Department of Agriculture Comment: Page 23, the first sentence is a repeat of the last sentence at the bottom of page 22. Response: This typo does not exist in the PDF version of the report that was made available on U. S. EPA’s Web page. Their rule-making process includes an opportunity for public comment. War and Legitimacy: the Securement of Sovereignty in the Northwest Indian War
i ABSTRACT WAR AND LEGITIMACY: THE SECUREMENT OF SOVEREIGNTY IN THE NORTHWEST INDIAN WAR During the post-revolution period, the newfound constitutional government of the United States faced a crisis of sovereignty and legitimacy. The Old Northwest region, encompassing what is now Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, was disputed between several groups. The U.S. government under George Washington claimed the region and sought to populate the land with white settlers, British officials in North America wished to reestablish British hegemony in the Ohio River valley and Native-Americans wished to protect their ancestral homeland from foreign invasion. In the 1790s, war broke out between a British backed alliance of Native tribes and the United States of America. Historians have named this conflict the Northwest Indian War. Examining government records, personal correspondences between Washington administration officials and military commanders, as well as recollections of soldiers, officials and civilians this thesis explores the geopolitical causes and ramifications of the Northwest Indian War. These sources demonstrate how the war was a reflection of a crisis which threatened the legitimacy to American sovereignty in the West. Furthermore, they also demonstrate how the use of a professional federal standing army was used by Washington’s government to secure American legitimacy. CONSTITUTION OF THE SHAWNEE TRIBE PREAMBLE We, the members of the Shawnee Tribe (formerly incorporated by agreement dated June 7, 1869, and approved on June 9, 1869, with the Cherokee Nation,) desire to retain our separate identity in order to preserve our Tribal culture and ensure tranquility among the Tribal members, whereby we may prosper with economic independence and social advancement. The Shawnee Tribe is an inseparable part of the United States. Therefore, we accept the United States Constitution as the supreme law of the land, and the Shawnee Tribe will not attempt to implement any laws, rules, or regulations in conflict with the Constitution of the United States of America. 322- A New Jersey Haven for Some Acculturated Lenape of Pennsylvania During the Indian Wars of the 1760s Marshall Joseph Becker West Chester University INTRODUCTION Accounts of Indian depredations are as old as the colonization of the New World, but examples of concerted assistance to Native Americans are few. Particu- larly uncommon are cases in which whites extended aid to Native Americans dur- ing periods when violent conflicts were ongoing and threatening large areas of the moving frontier. Two important examples of help being extended by the citizens of Pennsyl- vania and NewJersey to Native Americans of varied backgrounds who were fleeing from the trouble-wracked Pennsylvania colony took place during the period of the bitter Indian wars of the 1760s. The less successful example, the thwarted flight of the Moravian converts from the Forks of Delaware in Pennsylvania and their attempted passage through New Jersey, is summarized here in the appendices. The second and more successful case involved a little known cohort of Lenape from Chester County, Pennsylvania. These people had separated from their native kin by the 1730s and taken up permanent residence among colonial farmers. Dur- ing the time of turmoil for Pennsylvanians of Indian origin in the 1760s, this group of Lenape lived for seven years among the citizens of NewJersey. These cases shed light on the process of acculturation of Native American peoples in the colonies and also on the degree to which officials of the Jersey colony created a relatively secure environment for all the people of this area. They also provide insights into differences among various Native American groups as well as between traditionalists and acculturated members of the same group.' ANTI-NATIVE SENTIMENT IN THE 1760S The common English name for the Seven Years War (1755-1763), the "French and Indian War," reflects the ethnic alignments and generalized prejudices reflected in the New World manifestations of this conflict.
