Of all the sensational jewellery displayed by Tiffany at the 1889 Pick Paris Exposition Universelle the most memorable was a group of of the 24 enamelled orchid brooches. The exhibit, artfully suspended from fine wires above the main showcase, was singled out for its week ‘fertility of imagination and power of invention’ and won a gold medal – the first ever awarded to an American firm. Much of the credit went to the project’s artistic director George Paulding Farnham (1859-1927). He worked at Tiffany from 1879 but the orchid brooches are among the first pieces that can be firmly attributed to him. Some of the original watercolour sketches are pictured in John Loring’s Paulding Farnham: Tiffany’s Lost Genius (2000). Paulding Farnham had chosen a topical subject matter. His brooches paralleled a contemporary fashion for orchid cultivation that had begun in the UK and spread to the US by the end of the 19th century. They called it orchidomania. For his designs he enjoyed access to the Tiffany library, which Above: a Tiffany gold, enamel and gemset tiger orchid brooch, c.1890, contained many natural history journals, and to both live and sold for £50,000 at Elstob & Estob in Ripon on April 18. Dear reader As you know, the UK lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic has been extended into mid-May and the government’s chief medical officer announced last week that some form of “very socially disruptive” distancing measures will need to be in place until at least the end of the year. In this issue of ATG we report on how the art and antiques trade is responding to the latest developments. Dealer exhibitions are taking place online and plenty of stock is available to peruse on dealers’ websites (see pages 18-23). UK auction houses that in March had initially decided to cease trading temporarily are now lining up sales for May and June. They have noted the success of live online-only auctions and timed sales held in April and realised they can achieve similar results with their own online sales while working remotely and safely. Bidders are actively supporting auctions held in online formats and vendors are increasingly happy to engage in remote valuations and consignment discussions. At ATG we find ourselves in similar circumstances. As Ken Lewis points out in his letter to us this week (see page 39), “in these strange times one has to do unusual things”. He, like many of you, has been getting used to reading more online and we have been pleased by your feedback on the special PDF we arranged last week for the digital-only issue 2439 (you can also find one online for issue 2437 if you wish). Issue 2441 (cover date May 9, 2020) will be our third digital-only edition and will be followed by a print edition for issue 2442 (cover date May 16, 2020). Given that in some areas the local postal service has recently become slower than usual (not, of course, something the ATG can remedy for you), each week we will also email to you links to the digital version of the content. So, if you want to see the latest issue early online before your sorting office can get your printed newspaper through the door, you can do so. My thanks go to the ATG team - all of whom continue to work remotely and safely each week to bring you the latest news - and to you for subscribing to Antiques Trade Gazette. We look forward to bringing you the latest headlines each week as the market continues to evolve. Matt Ball Publishing Director

Sotheby’s teams up with Valls The London auction house holds its first online-only sale dedicated to a single dealer

by Alex Capon

With online sales becoming the new normal for auction houses and with the trade facing the obvious difficulties of selling from galleries during a lockdown, it might not seem surprising that Sotheby’s should hold its first internet-only sale of Old Masters devoted to a single dealer during this time. However, the auction of 100 works from London dealer Rafael Valls was arranged, catalogued and promoted well in advance of the coronavirus crisis. When it was announced in early March, it was made clear that the motivation behind the sale for both dealer and auctioneer was about reaching new buyers – using the ever- developing digital platforms in this Above left: a portrait of a gentleman standing beside a framed portrait of a lady most traditional of sectors. which was catalogued as ‘Italo-Flemish school, 17th century’ at Sotheby’s online sale For Sotheby’s, it was “a unique of 100 works from the Rafael Valls gallery. £1 = €1.13 The Sholes & Glidden was not the world’s first typewriter, but it was the first successful commercial example. Principally the work of US inventor Christopher Lathan Sholes, it was developed with the assistance of fellow printer Samuel Soule and amateur mechanic Carlos Glidden. The New York firm Remington, an arms manufacturer seeking to diversify, acquired the patent in early 1873 and put it into production the following year.
