Downloaded on behalf of Unknown Institution 2RPP Introduction Kafka and Other Animals Nonhuman protagonists are ubiquitous in Franz Kafka’s oeuvre, from his early stories down to the very last one. Among them we fnd dogs, jackals, leopards, a tiger, a panther, a vulture, a cat, and a mouse; a few unspecifed animals, such as a mole-like and a marten-like; mythological creatures, including sirens and a dragon; a kitten-lamb crossbreed; and several hum- animal protagonists: a human transformed into vermin, a man who used to be a horse, and an ape turned into a human being. Nonhuman animals1 abound also in Kafka’s personal writings. In a letter to his fancée, Felice Bauer, Kafka formulated his ultimate aim: “I strive to know the entire hu- man and animal community, to recognize their fundamental preferences, desires, and moral ideals, to reduce them to simple rules, and as quickly as possible to adopt these rules” (LF, 545). His diaries and letters also re- veal unique and enduring identifcations with nonhuman animals. “I am thriving among all the animals” (LFFE, 150), he declares in a letter to his friends Max and Elsa Brod, while visiting his sister on a farm in the village of Zrau.

    Arak and Gwydion (Some Thoughts on the Shadow Elves' History) By R. Sweeney Gwydion isn't a 'real' demon, but rather a creature of great power from the plane of shadow. Gwydion's evil was his enslavement of the ShadowElves. His torment is his betrayal by Arak. Unlike Vecna, he was not on the prime and could only be 'trapped' because he was trying to follow the Shadow Elves into RL. (Presumably to kill them or re-enslave them). I wonder what Arak was thinking, however. Would there be anyplace he could take the Shadow elves into exile where Gwydion could not follow? Did he think he could hide from such a powerful creature? Gwydion must have had an enemy. A sibling perhaps. The Shadow Elves must have acted as some sort of armed forces for him. Arak must have believed that if Gwydion suddenly found himself without his Slaves, he would have been destroyed by his rivals. However, there other.. less satisfying, perhaps, ways of re-writing ShadowElf history. Gwydion, the shadow-being, falls 'in love' with an elf from some other world. They mate, bear children. Woman dies, Gwydion takes his children and their children as slaves. Millenia pass. Arak was Gwydion's favorite. Perhaps, Gwydion had mated with one of the Shadow elves of unsurpassed beauty and begat Arak. Thus, he set his son above all the other slaves. Arak, however, desired more than to be the head of the slaves. He managed to betray his father to his enemies. Arak had intended patricide. He was going to take away Gwydion's protective armed forces, leaving him vulnerable to attack by his other enemies.

    Kafka Beyond the Kafkaesque: Reading Laughter in the ‘Dystopia’ of The Castle Chinmaya Lal Thakur Graduate Researcher Department of Creative Arts and English La Trobe University, Melbourne Abstract: Franz Kafka’s fiction has been read as presenting instances of especially deprived subjectivities. Kafka’s protagonists are seen as being alienated from others around them. They are uncritical servants of tyrannical bureaucratic organizations and offer no resistance to the frightening impact of the forces of power, technological surveillance, and domination that constitute the episteme that they inhabit. Their situation, to put it succinctly, is Kafkaesque- defined by the Merriam Webster dictionary as “of, relating to, or suggestive of Franz Kafka or his writings; especially having a nightmarishly complex, bizarre, or illogical quality.” The present paper argues that Kafka adopts an ironical attitude towards his protagonists as they seek to control the accidents and surprises, they encounter in their lives and render them manageable. It reads K.’s meeting with the official Burgel from the Castle in Kafka’s The Castle (1926) as being an instance of an accidental and humorous situation that critiques the metaphysical dualities characterizing human existence - such as freedom and determination- by reflecting ironically on them. This humor is of course humor at the expense of the protagonist, but it is also humoring that points to the (futile) human endeavor of seeking to achieve absolute freedom in the world. The paper, thus, attempts to establish an association between Kafka’s ironical attitude towards K. in The Castle and the critique of the nightmarish, terrifying, and ultimately dystopian aspects of Cartesian modernity that such an attitude leads to.

Here is what Vogl writes: From the terror of secret scenes of torture to childish officials, from the filth of the bureaucratic order to atavistic rituals of power runs a track of comedy that forever indicates the absence of reason, the element of the arbitrary in the execution of power and rule. How- ever, the element of the grotesque does not unmask and merely denounce. Rather it refers—as Foucault once pointed out—to the inevitability, the inescapability of precisely the grotesque, ridicu- lous, loony, or abject sides of power. Kafka’s “political grotesque” displays an unsystematic arbitrariness, which belongs to the func- tions of the apparatus itself.     8 BILL DODD The case for a political reading One of the images of Kafka propagated by Kafka criticism, and supported by a much-quoted remark Kafka made in his diary, is of the solitary writer whose subject matter is his own ‘dreamlike inner life’ (6.viii.14; D2: 77). Occasionally Kafka’s diary entry on the outbreak of the Great War four days earlier is cited as proof of his distance from the political world: ‘Germany has declared war on Russia. – Swimming in the afternoon’ (D2: 75). But the interpretation sometimes placed on these words, that they belong to a writer far removed from the great events of his time, warrants investigation. Do they or do they not articulate emotional or intellectual distance, unconcern, even aloofness? In contrast, another diary entry, from the previous year: ‘Don’t forget Kropotkin!’ (15.x.13; D1: 330) has attracted relatively little critical attention, even though Max Brod recalls that the memoirs of this nineteenth-century Russian anarchist were amongst Kafka’s favourite books. Where it has been commented on it has often been played down. Here, too, the elliptical form of the diary entry itself does not help us make up our minds. What are we to read into these words: an intellectual or emotional commitment, a special indebtedness – or simply a note on an overdue library book? Setting out to write about ‘Kafka’s politics’ one is reminded of a famous piece of advice from Kafka himself: ‘Give it up, give it up!’ (GWC: 183). However, an attempt at a systematic study of Kafka’s relation to politics has recently been published in German.1 The very notion that he is in any sense a political writer, let alone a writer offering a radical critique of social insti- tutions and conditions, is still somewhat contentious in Kafka scholarship.

Sep. 2021 Animal Studies: Kafka’s Animal Stories Axel Goodbody Franz Kafka, who lived in the city of Prague as a member of the German-speaking Jewish minority, is usually thought of as a quintessentially urban author. The role played by nature and the countryside in his work is insignificant. He was also no descriptive realist: his domain is commonly referred to as the ‘inner life’, and he is chiefly remembered for his depiction of outsider situations accompanied by feelings of inadequacy and guilt, in nightmarish scenarios reflecting the alienation of the modern subject. Kafka was only known to a small circle of when he died of tuberculosis, aged 40, in 1924. However, his enigmatic tales, bafflingly grotesque but memorably disturbing because they resonate with readers’ own experiences, anxieties and dreams, their sense of marginality in family and society, and their yearning for self-identity, rapidly acquired the status of world literature after the Holocaust and the Second World War.

Born in 1883, Kafka lived in the midst of the regime’s power. It was not until during his pursued careers as a banker and law student that Kafka gained knowledge, and thus opinions, on bureaucracy and law. However, it was not until his work was published after his death by a close friend, Max Brod, that the world learned about his insights on the problematic nature of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. His writing, once being a disclosed hobby, became a publicly studied work possessing varying literary techniques, such as absurdism. Identified through close reading and an understanding of the philosophy of law, it becomes clear that Kafka’s work critiques positive law, a legal system focused on solely the implementation of the law and favors natural law, a system where morality and law work in tandem. Our exploration of the epistolary genre will range between private letters and published literary works and seek to read the one in conjunction with the other. Of particular concern will be structures of direct and indirect address, the use of pet names and invention of secret codes and idioms, the materiality of the letter and the postal network, epistolary conventions, and the ties through which poetry, philosophy, literature, personal and public correspondence are themselves intimately bound.
