  • Newsletter 90 Spring 2014
NEWSLETTER 90 SPRING 2014 EDITORIAL We have reached the 90th Newsletter and another new year. I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year and didn’t get blown away or flooded! By the time you read this we will be over halfway through our Lecture Programme and we have already had some varied topics – all of interest. Ideas are welcome for the 2014/15 season so if you have any suggestions please contact Jane Ellis (details at the end of the Newsletter). Please note that we have added a new event to this year’s programme – a visit to Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley, organised by section member Graham Collett, on 17 May. Details of the visit are given on the accompanying information sheet / booking form. Do contact Graham as soon as you can to book your place. I am also trying to arrange a visit to the Monckton Coke Works near Barnsley as a follow-up to the talk given at the September day school at the National Mining Museum. If this visit goes ahead it is likely to be in the summer so details will be included in the next Newsletter. The 150th anniversary year of the main Society has come to an end and I hope you managed to join one of the events. Attendance at the events varied, with some proving very popular but others having to be cancelled due to low interest, or in the case of the visit to Barnsley Experience, no interest. The YAHS Collections book which was produced highlighting the range of material in the library and archives was very well received and copies are still available at Claremont at the reasonable price of £5.

  • Newsletter No. 74 Autumn 2008 Editorial
NEWSLETTER NO. 74 AUTUMN 2008 EDITORIAL Welcome to the latest Newsletter; I hope you have had an enjoyable summer in spite of the dreadful weather, Due to a clash of dates I was unable to attend this year’s AIA Conference which was held in Wiltshire and I look forward to reading the report which will appear in Industrial Archaeology News. I am also looking forward to the forthcoming 2008-2009 Lecture Programme; full details are given on the separate sheet, meeting as usual on Saturday mornings at Claremont. In the past the Section has considered whether midweek evening meetings or Saturday afternoons would attract more members to join and attend but the general view from those who have expressed it, is that Saturday mornings are preferred. However please note that the 2009 AGM will be starting earlier at 10.30am. This is because we will have another local walk in the afternoon starting at 2pm and starting the AGM half an hour earlier gives a little more time for members’ contributions and lunch. I am sure that you will agree with me that our Lecture Secretary, Jane Ellis, has yet again organised an interesting and varied programme and I hope many of you will be able to attend at least a few lectures during the season. Robert Vickers will also lead a walk around Huddersfield on Sunday 10 May 2009, meeting at the Railway Station at 11am with a pub lunch. Let’s hope there is better weather for this than his walk around Bradford, which is reported on later in the Newsletter.

  • A Lunchtime Stroll in Leeds City Centre
2 kilometres / 30 minutes to 1 hour. Accessibility – All this route is on pavements and avoids steps. A lunchtime stroll in Leeds City Centre There are numerous bridges and river crossings in Leeds. However, there is only one referred to affectionately as “Leeds Bridge”. This is where our walk starts. There has been some form of crossing here since the middle ages. The bridge you see today was built out of cast iron in the early 1870's. In 1888 the bridge was witness to a world first. The “Father of Cinematography”, Louis Le Prince, shot what is considered to be the world’s earliest moving pictures from the bridge. © It's No Game (cc-by-sa/2.0) Walk across Leeds Bridge and take a right along Dock Street. Dock Street began its life as a commercial entity in the 1800's. Then, during the Industrial Revolution, the canal network provided the catalyst for the city's growth. As its name suggests, boats used to dock along Dock Street. A deep dock allowed the loading and unloading of barges into warehouses. Today Dock Street still looks familiar, but the warehouses have become housing and business spaces. Converted and conserved in the 1980's. Continuing along Dock Street you will pass Centenary Bridge. This bridge was built in 1993 to celebrate 100 years since Leeds was granted city status. It also created better pedestrian access across the Aire. Dock Street c. 1930 By kind permission of Leeds Libraries, www.leodis.net Continue along Dock Street and you will come to Brewery Wharf.

Exploring Coal Mining with Folk Song In Our Own Words Written by Bryony Griffith In partnership with the National Coal Mining Museum for England and Wakefield Music Education Hub Unlocking hidden treasures of England’s cultural heritage Explore | Discover | Take Part The Full English Extra The Full English Extra was an initiative to preserve and promote the folk arts, building on the success of EFDSS’ flagship project The Full English, which created the world’s largest digital archive of folk songs, dances, tunes and customs, and a nationwide learning programme that reached more than 16,000 people. The project was led by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Full English Extra saw the collections of Mary Neal, suffragette, radical arts practitioner and founder of the Esperance Girls Club, and folk dance educator Daisy Caroline Daking added to the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library online archive (www.vwml.org), alongside its collection of 19th century broadside ballads and songsters. The Full English learning programme worked with three national museums – the Museum of English Rural Life at the University of Reading, the National Coal Mining Museum for England near Wakefield in West Yorkshire and the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London – combining folk arts and museum education to provide powerful new learning experiences for schools and music hubs. Supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.
