Imagine if you found a shoebox of tapes on your front porch about a girl who had recently killed herself. This is what happens to Clay Jensen in the novel Thirteen Reasons Why. I really liked this book, as it talked about something that usually goes fairly taboo, suicide. As the story goes on, the reader finds out more and more about Hannah Baker’s suicide. I really like that about this book, as you start off not knowing much about why Hannah did what she did, but end up feeling as though this had just happened and you were in the book. A person who doesn't normally find themselves motivated to pick up a book and start reading, it made me want to keep reading to find out more! Overall, this was a great book about a serious topic, but portrays that topic in a way that I’ve never seen before. -Stephen Suelzer

MHS RECOMMENDS Have you ever wished you could go to another place where things are stranger than usual? Gregor The Overlander is a perfect representation. I liked the book because it was a new flavor and new story for me to enjoy. I loved the overly enlarged animals and insects; it really made the book way more enjoyable. I also like how she made the bats and cockroaches like companions and gave them personalities which makes you get attached to them pretty quickly. The type of person that would like to read this book is someone that likes to feel for the characters and go along the journey with them. In conclusion, I think this book is a really good and intense read that honestly anyone would enjoy.

MHS RECOMMENDS Turtles All The Way Down is definitely one of John Green's best novels yet. The novel centers on Aza Holmes, a 16 year old high school student living with obsessive- compulsive disorder and a great deal of anxiety. Daisy, Aza’s funny and light hearted best friend is also at the center of the novel. Many young adult novels today are not always very realistic, but that is not the case with Turtles all The Way Down. I liked how realistic the story portrays Aza’s mental illness and what she is going through with having to live with her mental illness. I liked how the author did such a good job at describing what it's like for Aza to live with obsessive-compulsive disorder and what challenges Aza faces with living with obsessive-compulsive disorder. I appreciated the powerful message of the novel that there are things in life you don’t want to have to deal or live with for your whole life, but there are also amazing moments of happiness worth living for in life. Another inspiring message in Turtles All The Way Down that I liked is to make the most of your life because it's the only one you have and to have fun and take risk in life. An interesting part of the novel to me was reading so much about Aza’s thoughts and how she spends so much time inside her head in her own world. I really liked the idea of two best friends going on journey to find a missing billionaire like they did in Turtles All The Way Down. In my opinion I think Turtles All The Way Down would be most appealing to teenagers and young adults because they could enjoy the book more because they can relate to the characters and what they are going through. Overall I thought Turtles All The Way Down was a very good book, and I enjoyed reading it. The suspense of the story will definitely keep you turning the pages! -Colin Wedge MHS RECOMMENDS Could it possibly get any worse than a maze death trap? I liked this book for the constant unexpected surprises in the plot. Along with the fighting and thrilling aspects. The book also has a great plot which built from the previous book and throws in a lot of unexpected turns in the story line. The author also creates their own language and way of speaking. The language is very easy to understand but is just a cool interesting addition. I also really loved the development and changes. Characters who go from being the most scared, become the bravest. The characters who are the most kind-hearted, become the coldest. Along with character you would never expect to cause betrayal are the ones who actually cause the betrayal. Overall this story is excellent and well worthy of the five out of five rating. I would recommend this book for any person who likes to read and any child with a great imagination. In conclusion, this book is great for anyone and is a fantastic read with many cool aspects. -Justyse Krontz MHS RECOMMENDS If you are looking for a good book to read, you should read Code of Honor. I liked the book a lot, and the reason I like it so much is because it was a action book mixed with a crime solving book. Also, the book was very interesting because it was about a military family going through a hard time. Next, I like it so much because it was very easy to understand and it was a good size book. The type of audience this book was directed for was for young adults. Lastly, to include the book Code of Honor was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone trying to find a new book to read. -Tyler Graham

The reader will be sucked in as they follow Adelina in her journey to decide who she really wants to be. A valiant hero who makes things right or a vengeful villain that rules with fear. This book will be full of twists and turns, unlike the straight path of most novels with a happily-ever after. The reader will never be disappointed for lack of entertainment because the plot is not as predictable this time. - Coinne Gao MHS RECOMMENDS The book was just as good as the movie. I enjoyed the book The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks because the story about a at first summer romance between two teenagers. The two had a lot of fun with each other that summer and the relationship grew, but one day, everything changes and they might never meet again. Allie moves on, however, Noah does not. The two meet again and feelings they once felt they feel again. The book and the movie have similar storylines, and the ending in both is very sad but also a great ending. The story of this romance is magical. I think teenage girls or young women would enjoy this book the most. I enjoyed the movie and the book both. The book was just as good as the movie. - Hannah Campagna

MHS RECOMMENDS Have you ever dreamed of living in a world full of virtual reality? If you read Warcross your dream will come true. I liked the book Warcross because it pulls you into the plot of the story right away. Throughout the book it never seems to slow, and it continues to grab the reader’s attention which I think makes a really great book. I think that Warcross was interesting because it was set in a world where everything revolves around virtual reality. This book is geared more towards high school and middle school kids, but I think that it could be enjoyed by a reader of any age. To conclude, I think that Warcross is a really good book, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in sci-fi books that have a hint of romance. -Piper Stewart

MHS RECOMMENDS The Hunger Games, a futuristic world where young adults are forced to kill for their own survival. I found this book to very entertaining and very suspenseful. The main reason why I liked the book is because you never knew what was coming next, so this made me just want to read it more. The way Suzanne Collins wrote this book made it very interesting and a very good read. One instance when it was a page turner was during the reaping. It was first, so suspenseful waiting to figure out what name would be drawn, but then when Katniss volunteered over her sister, that is what made me want to know what would happen next. Also, I found that the jealousy between Gale and Katniss really made me want to see what happened at the end if Katniss and Peeta made it out alive together. I think that the Suzanne Collins’ targeted audience was teenagers who love a good thrill and love to be kept on their toes waiting to see what happens next. So in the end, this was most definitely my favorite book out of the three that I did read and this was mainly just because of the suspense that just made me want to continue reading to the end. -David Urbanski MHS RECOMMENDS Earlier this month I read The Hunger Games, and that just so happens to be my favorite book that I read this year. The first part that I liked is how Katniss was able to sacrifice herself for her little sister, even when she knew what was to come. I like how this book was able to show how truly brave Katniss was all through the book (SPOILER ALERT), and I liked that at the end Katniss and Peeta were willing to kill themselves, just so that they could both go home safely. I think that this book could be targeted to any audience, but if I had to pick one, it would be young adults because that is about the age of every character in the book. In conclusion, if you haven't read the book I think that you definitely should. -Butler

MHS RECOMMENDS Don’t we all love books that are really easy to read? Or make you feel like you’re reading fast when really there are just a lot of pages with a small amount of text on each? Thankfully, there are some good books written like this, like Saving Red by Sonya Sones. The reason I loved this book so much is because it’s so captivating. I finished it in 3 days, all 300 some pages. The story takes you to another place and starts off very fast, so people who don’t like slow books would enjoy this. Younger audiences would enjoy this more in my opinion because it has teen romance and action and very memorable characters. The story takes you to a different world, and the is an innocent person who is also almost the underdog of the story, so you tend to feel very empathetic for her. In conclusion, this may have been the best book I’ve ever read. I would highly recommend this to anybody who enjoys a good novel, so pretty much everybody who reads! -Mitchell Wiley MHS RECOMMENDS Ever wondered what life was like before we came along? Wings of Fire is based in prehistoric times but dragons ruled the earth. Wings of Fire is a 10 book long series which follows the lives of dragons from different tribes. As this book moves along in the series, it starts to change its pattern as it was before. The change in the pattern keeps my attention and I'm always looking forward to the next book. If you like fiction adventurous books, then this is for you. It's always full of battles and exploration around the land.

MHS RECOMMENDS Looking for a spine tingling thriller? Read American Psycho. American Psycho is a book about a young man named Patrick Bateman who works on Wall street. Bateman has convinced himself that he is an emotionless psycho killer. As the book and Bateman’s “killing spree” goes on, he begins to drive himself mad to the point where you don’t know what’s real or fictional. The book offers very gory & grotesque moments, and it captures conformity and 80s yuppie culture. While most people like to compare the movie to the book, Bateman & the events in the book are way more explicit and gory than the movie. By the end of the book you’ll be questioning every event in the book. Overall the book is exciting and will leave you wanting more. I highly recommend it. -McKayla Scherdt MHS RECOMMENDS Have you ever felt like there was no hope for yourself? In The Lost Causes, Gabby, Sabrina, Z, Justin, and Andrew were all deemed Lost Causes and everyone, including their parents, had given up on them. A top secret serum, special abilities, and a mission for the FBI brought these outcasts together in this book. The Lost Causes was an intriguing thriller, and I never wanted to put it down. The characters were realistic high schoolers that were easy to connect with, especially since they had their own mental problems that they struggled with: anger issues, OCD, hypochondria, addiction, and depression. Those problems made it easy for anyone to relate, even if they didn’t have those illnesses. The characters developed throughout the story and proved to themselves and to others that they were not hopeless. I think the characters were likeable, realistic, they had a good amount of depth and back story, and I thought it was interesting to see their friendship develop. In all, I think The Lost Causes would appeal to anyone who likes sci-fi, thrillers, realistic stories, or mysteries. -Madison Reedy MHS RECOMMENDS The world of Prythian is full of lies and betrayal, and Feyre is soon going to discover this for herself. A Court of Mist and Fury is the second book in the Court of Thorns and Roses series. This book was absolutely fantastic! This book dives more into the world than the first book introduces, which I loved. It was great learning about the lore and magic in Prythian and how it all connects back to the main character, Feyre. The characters in this book were amazing, and I loved reading about them. Characters from the first book are explained in more detail, and a multitude of new and loveable characters are introduced in this book. All the characters were dynamic and had their own backstories. This was nice because sometimes in other books it feels like the side characters are just plot devices to move the main story along. Another thing I loved was the imagery in this book. I loved reading about the different places Feyre went to and how they were all different from where the first book took place. Anyone who is interested in high fantasy literature and is comfortable with mature romance should read this series. I could write pages upon pages about this book, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone else. A Court of Mist and Fury is a wonderful book and part of a wonderful series that I think everyone should read eventually. -Kylee Downey MHS RECOMMENDS Out of the three books I read I would have to say The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan was my favorite. I would give the book a definite 10/10. I liked that it started out calm, and the author would add scary parts where you don’t know what was going to happen or not. I also liked how the author killed off characters (although I did like the characters) to show that really anything could happen in the book during the war against the Titans. But, my favorite part was probably when Rachel flew in on Blackjack and eventually found out she had the gift of the prophecy and when everyone remaining went back to Camp Half-Blood and continued their life without worrying. I think the kind of person to read this book would probably be somewhat quiet and curious about everything. I would probably rate this book 10/10. I would recommend reading this book, it’s worthwhile. -Kathleen Harmon MHS RECOMMENDS There are a lot of mythical book series out there. My favorite Percy Jackson book is the fifth one. I liked this book because it was mythical, and I like mythical stories because they have a lot of action. I believe people who like Greek Gods would like this book. Percy Jackson had some business to take care of for his camp. He had to take a long journey to get there. This book was exciting, and that is why I liked it.

MHS RECOMMENDS Do you ever want to change something in your life that is so addicting? Well, James Frey did just that. I liked this book because it really showed how the author pulled through the hard times to come out how he wanted to. The interesting part about this novel was that the author was the main character in the story. The type of person to read this novel could be anyone who is going through a rough patch, wanting to quit an addiction or just for fun. This book is one of the best ones I have read yet. It really shows how someone can overcome all that is bad in their life. This book really grabs the reader’s attention, and doesn’t let go until the very last word! -Kara Leck

MHS RECOMMENDS When I first started The Gunslinger, I thought it was another western sci-fi novel. I was delightfully surprised that’s not what the book was about. What I enjoyed about this novel was the characters, plot, and energy of the book. I thought it was cool how Jake, a character in the book, was from 21st century New York. When he died, he was transported to the gunslinger's world. It gave a connection from this western fantasy to real life. This aspect of the novel basically transported me there. The mystery in this book is astounding, compelling you to flip each page faster than the last. The gunslinger is such a mysterious main character, that you know more about insignificant characters than him. I believe this book was written for more mature audiences, such as teens and adults. Stephen King really did do a fantastic job. -Jordan Kikolski MHS RECOMMENDS If you have thought about reading The Maze Runner, you should definitely give it a try. This novel is filled with action and suspense from start to finish. The story begins with Thomas, a teenage boy who has awoken in a strange metallic box. He can’t remember anything except for his name. He arises into a strange place called the Glade. He is surrounded by boys around his age, and they tell him he is inside a giant maze. The very next day much to the alarm of the other “Gladers,” the box arises again. This time a girl is inside the box, which is the first time this has ever happened. As the story continues, you really feel as if you are taking the journey with Thomas, and it seems as if you are right there with him. This story is interesting and excited which makes it a great read. -Joseph Shrader

MHS RECOMMENDS My favorite book of the month was the first one I did which was Twilight. I liked Twilight the best because it is like a love story and it is very interesting on how Bella meets Edward and how they fall in love. But in the mix of this all Edward and his family are vampires. They face a lot of problems throughout the book like keeping secrets from her dad because of Edward being a vampire and fighting with other groups of vampires. Twilight is a series of books and there are movies on them too that are really good. Twilight has a lot of action in it. That's why I liked it and the mix of the love between a human and a vampire. -Haleigh Crouch

MHS RECOMMENDS Carrie was a thrilling horror novel that follows teenager, Carrie White, and how she takes revenge on all of her bullies. This book was great because the reader really gets attached to Carrie, and they begin to actually feel her pain. Most of her problems are very extreme, yet the reader can still relate because, first, the book is written so well, and second, she still has the same problems that lots of teenagers deal with in high school. This book would be great for anyone who loves thrillers and is at least 14. There are some things in this book that are kind of mature for some ages, and there is a lot of violence in it. Overall, this book was fantastic, and it’s very hard to put down. -Grace Hughes

MHS RECOMMENDS Do you like basketball? If so, then this will be your favorite. I really loved this book because it had amazing facts about basketball. I loved how they explained from when the game started to the present. It talked about the greatest players and the greatest moments of basketball history. I think the intended audience was for kids and adults that want to know basketball or have great passion for the game. In conclusion, Bill Walton did an amazing job on explaining the game which also helped because he played in the NBA.

MHS RECOMMENDS We Were Liars is set on Cadence’s family island, where she and her family spend their summers. They live a perfect life, but it comes to a halt for Cadence once an accident on the island leaves her missing pieces of her memory. Once she comes back to the island, she spends her time with the other liars and her family. During her stay, she tries to piece together the events that lead up to the incident, but nobody will give her any details. The story takes a twist at the end, and leaves Cadence completely shocked at what had happened that fateful night. -Zisko

MHS RECOMMENDS We’ve all heard the story of Beauty and the Beast. This tale, A Court of Thorns and Roses, gave the story a modern twist, adding in faerie folklore and a couple more spiraling points to keep the reader guessing. This novel captures the attention of teens and adults alike with its gripping suspense and tragic love interest. It starts with Feyre Archeron, a 19-year-old whose family depends on her hunting abilities. When a wolf interferes with her hunt for a doe, she shoots it without question, not pausing for a moment at the fact that it might be a faerie. When she arrives home, a mysterious beast demands repayment for the wolf that was indeed disguised fae. Feyre is whisked away to a land that she has only heard legends of and finds her captor to be more than meets the eye. As the tale snowballs farther and farther into disaster, Feyre ends up facing unimaginable dangers to save the one she loves. This story is riveting, beautiful, and the characters and perfection, keeping readers glued to the book. -Lexi Szyndler MHS RECOMMENDS My favorite book of the Month was February book of Month, Peak. I liked this book because of the plot it had and how much of an adventure type of book it was. I’ve read this book three times because of how good a book it is. I would recommend this to a person who likes adventure types of books. In conclusion, if you like books that are adventure books or books leaving you on cliffhangers all the time, be sure to read this one

MHS RECOMMENDS There are so many love stories now. This is not one of them. This novel is far from basic. This book is intended for young adults. It requires slightly higher thinking to follow what is going on throughout the novel. The main character, Anna, falls in love with a boy, who at first seems like a creepy stalker. As previously stated, this is not a basic love story. Bennett, the boy Anna falls in love with, has a secret. Obviously I’m not gonna tell the secret, but it’s huge. This secret not only affects Bennett, but it also affects Anna, and it has the potential to affect pretty much the whole world. This book is great for anyone who loves a realistic love story with a twist of fantasy. So, If you want a good realistic love story with a few twists and turns along the way, then this book is the one for you. -Dakota Kozina MHS RECOMMENDS Teens take things for granted. If I Stay is a book for teens who need to realize their lives are important and people love them unconditionally no matter what. The story shows how quickly life can be taken from you as the story starts off with a car crash. Mia, the daughter or main character, she has everything a family that adores her, a beautiful boyfriend, and a career path full of anticipation. She’s caught between life and death. She’s in coma after the crash and spends the day recapping her life and guessing what could happen in her unknowable future. The book is interesting and keeps you wanting to know more, if she lives or if she dies, who is there for her, will she ever continue to play the cello, does her boyfriend stay with her? The unpredictable ending leaves you thirsty to read more. -Cecilia O’Connel MHS RECOMMENDS There are two types of people: the geeks and the popular kids. In this realistic fiction novel a group of high school boys attempt to turn the school , Simon Glass, into a jock. It all starts out as a game devised by the main character, Steward Young, but by the end of the book it becomes much more than a game for Young. Many plot points in Shattering Glass appeal to teenagers such as, the high school setting, hacking your grades, throwing a party while your parents are gone, etc., so this book would be perfect for a high schooler to read. The author makes it easy for the reader to get behind each character’s thought process and understand why each event happens. Shattering Glass is a wonderful piece of fiction and a great read. -Cameron Hite

MHS RECOMMENDS Many books with characters who have tragic things happen to them give off a depressing theme, but this novel is very comical. This book is great for teens who are trying to survive high school, just like the main characters in the story, Greg and Earl. Telling the story of senior in high school, Greg, and his friend Earl, the story starts off explaining how to socially survive through high school and how Greg has managed so far. Sadly, this book takes a turn for the worst when one of their colleagues, Rachel, gets cancer, but the story quickly changes its theme to how Greg and Earl comfort Rachel through her hard times. They manage to turn most sad situations into humorous events. Despite such a devastating event, the book turns the worst into something entertaining and funny, and this is what makes the book so easy for readers to fall in love with. -Emily Lewis MHS RECOMMENDS Most fantasy books these days are about vampires or werewolves. What happened to the fairy tales we loved so much as kids? Where did that feeling when you read them go? Well, The Land of Stories is just for you. With Connor and Alex Bailey, you can go on an adventure in The Land of Stories. This book is amazing. It will take you back to your childhood. I loved this book and its series. This book was well written. The storyline was outstanding. I loved this book and I hope you love it too. -Bailey Hazard

MHS RECOMMENDS The book Mutual Feelings was an amazing book. It is a love story about a girl and a guy, named Will and Zac. Will always knew he loved Zac, he fell in love with her at first sight. When he finally worked up the courage to go on a date, it was great. Later on though, Zac told Will that she wasn't sure if she was ready for a relationship. She had very bad trust issues due to past relationships, so they agreed to remain “friends with benefits”. They got closer and closer as time went on, but after a while, Will almost felt hopeless of ever gaining her trust. Reading this story will always have you wondering what is gonna happen next, and I think that's what I liked best about it. -Aliza Geiger

MHS RECOMMENDS In the world of Grisha, some people are born with a power. Some control fire or water, others control materials, able to create artificial products, and still others can heal or stop one’s heartbeat with the snap of a finger. When controlled, this power can benefit all. But a drug has appeared, and it allows Grisha power to go out of control. And when one possesses this power, it can be used against anyone who crosses their path, and no one can stop it. Well, no one but the infamous Kaz Brekker. If you choose to explore Leigh Bardugo’s world, (and you should), you can expect heartbreaking backstories, daring dos, and crazy schemes that will leave you wanting more. -Alexandra Karrenbauer MHS RECOMMENDS During high school orientation at Haskins High, five freshmen meet for the first time. There are so many ups and downs throughout their four years at Haskins, you don't know how the book is going to turn out. -Davidson

MHS RECOMMENDS Do you enjoy fiction or nonfiction? I personally prefer nonfiction and if you do too Guinness world records is the book for you. I enjoyed the book as it was full of interesting facts about what records there are and how far a person will go to achieve them. I found it very interesting how some people risk their lives or do things of which seem impossible by man and is the main reason I enjoy and suggest this book. I would suggest this to one of my friends as they do not like reading like me as well however I thoroughly enjoyed this book because of how interesting it was. In conclusion, If you do not like fiction or maybe not even like to read Guinness world records is a book to try. -Andrew Carlozzi

MHS RECOMMENDS Have you ever felt like an outsider? Well, 5th grader Auggie Pullman did, and always has. Wonder, an amazing novel written by R.J. Palacio tells the story of a 10 year old starting his first year of public school. Not too interesting? Wrong. Auggie is not an ordinary 5th grader. In fact, he is quite the opposite. Auggie was born with a facial deformity which lowers his self-esteem and willingness to see the outside world. Auggie’s first days of school are pretty rocky, but things start to go smoother towards the end - or so you think. Following Auggie through his school experience was quite touching and inspirational. If you love to read, I’m sure you would love to see Auggie deal with his personal struggles, bullies, and even see him make a few friends along the way. -Kiley Bowlin
