They contain articles and resources for social science teaching on elementary and secondary levels in England. The February issue examines assessment of social science programs, the ideological potential of high sehool sociology, and an experimental program of ',linkage,' whereby students in twoschools teach each other by exchanging learning packages, Articles in the April issue focus on social change and social control as goals of studying society, usefulness of traditional standard examinations for new social science curricula, and an experimental sociology program which studies community rights. The June and October issues are special editions on school textbooks and curriculum projects, and games and simulations, respectively. The November issue includes articles on cultural studies and values education, and on teaching the conceptof role. Specific teaching strategies presented in the issuesinclude development of individual learning folders, fairy tales as asocial studies resource, a five-week course outline for teaching about deviance in behavior, and classroom activities for clarifyingvalues. D. Cornell University 2011 This dissertation, The ‘Bestli’ Outlaw: Wilderness and Exile in Old and Middle English Literature explores the reasons for the survival of the beast-like outlaw, a transgressive figure who highlights tensions in normative definitions of human and natural, which came to represent both the fears and the desires of a people in a state of constant negotiation with the land they inhabited. Although the outlaw’s shelter in the wilderness changed dramatically from the dense and menacing forests of Anglo-Saxon England to the bright, known, and mapped greenwood of the late outlaw romances and ballads, the outlaw remained strongly animalistic, other, and liminal, in strong contrast to premodern notions of what it meant to be human and civilized. I argue that outlaw narratives become particularly popular and poignant at moments of national political and ecological crisis—as they did during the Viking attacks of the Anglo-Saxon period, the epoch of intense natural change following the Norman Conquest, and the beginning of the market revolution at the end of the Middle Ages. Figures like the Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter Hereward, the exiled Marcher lord Fulk Fitz Waryn, and the brutal yet courtly Gamelyn and Robin Hood, represent a lost England imagined as pristine and forested.

The application dated 6 March 2017 was refused by the Council on 3 October 2017. The Appellant claims that the definitive map and statement of public rights of way should be modified by upgrading footpaths 54 and 55 in the parish of Coppull to bridleways (shown by bold broken line on the plan attached to this decision). Summary of Decision: The Appeal is dismissed. Preliminary Matters 1. I have been directed by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to determine this appeal under Section 53 (5) and Paragraph 4 (1) of Schedule 14 of the 1981 Act. 2. Some artists may glorify that, but other artists either decry it or offer it as a tragic reality. In hip-hop trends build off of music and music builds off of trends in a cyclical manner.

RAPT in the mist of unwritten history there W is some tradition that long before the coming of the Normans, Standish was a fortified station or camp of some importance. Lying, as it does, on an elevated plateau 370 feet above sea- level, on the direct route of the Roman road between Wigan and Walton-le-Dale, there may be some truth in the tradition. The fact that the Romans were acquainted with the use of coal is now fully established, and so great an authority on mining as Professor Hull considers there is good evidence that they discovered and worked the Arley seam which crops out along the banks of the river Douglas between Standish and Wigan. Years ago, while driving a tunnel to divert the course of the river, this coal seam of 6 feet in thickness was found to have been mined in a manner hitherto altogether unknown. "It was excavated into a series of polygonal chambers, with vertical walls opening into each other by short passages, and, on the whole, presenting on a ground plan something of the appearance of a honeycomb.
