HHS in the KNOW Weekly Bulletin HHS IN THE KNOW Weekly Bulletin Week of September 24, 2018 FOR PARENTS: STUDENT FEES - First semester course fees, AP exam deposits, and fall athletic participation fees have been posted to student accounts in Infinite Campus. Please note: You can pay fees in total or make payments throughout the school year. There are two ways to pay fees: 1. Pay Online – Just click on this link to the RevTrak system to pay online with a credit card. 2. Send a Check – Please include your student’s name or ID number and send payment to Heritage High School, Attn: Bookkeeper, 1401 West Geddes Avenue, Littleton, CO 80120, or you can have your student drop the payment by the bookkeeping window. If you haven’t had a chance to purchase a yearbook, make donations, or pay other optional fees, please click on this link to the HHS Check-In Fee Form. These optional fees are also on RevTrak. Please feel free to contact me with any questions: Karin Parker at (303) 347-7609 or [email protected]. Thank you! ATTENDANCE: Did you know that LPS students miss an average of only THREE days every school year? Here at Heritage, we know how important it is for students to be in class in order to maximize their education. After eight days of absences due to illness, students will be asked to bring in a doctor’s note to have the absence marked as excused. Vacations will be excused on a case-by-case basis and largely dependent on if your child is able to keep up in class. If your child struggles to get to school consistently, we have many resources to help! Please let us know if you have any questions. You may contact Dean of Students Amanda Hurley at [email protected] or 303-347-3680 for assistance with attendance issues. EXCUSING YOUR STUDENT FOR AN APPOINTMENT: If your student has an appointment that will cause him/her to miss class time, the following procedure should be followed: 1. Phone the appointment information into the Attendance Office at (303) 734-6700 at least 24 hours in advance. Include the time your student needs to leave and the time you expect him/her to return to school. 2. A pass will be prepared and waiting in the Attendance Office for your student to pick up before school on the day of the appointment. a. Your student needs to give the pass to the appropriate teacher before class begins so he/she can leave class with minimal interruption. b. If your student is leaving between classes, no pass is necessary. You will just need to call and excuse him/her from any periods missed. 3. Upon returning to school your student must check in at the Attendance Office, even if it is during an unscheduled or passing period. Failure to do so may result in an unexcused absence. Please note: If a message is left on the recorder the day of the appointment, it may not be retrieved until after your student needs to leave. If you arrive at school to pick up your student without prior notice, you may experience a delay that could cause you to be late for your appointment as we do not always have someone available to run passes to classrooms. NUTRITION SERVICES: Free and Reduced meal benefits from the previous school year carry over for the first 30 operating days of the new school year or until a new eligibility determination is made. If an application has not been submitted by the 30th day, the prior year benefit with expire and the student(s) will have to pay full price for meals. Free or Reduced Meal Applications are available online at http://littletonpublicschools.net/welcome-lps-nutrition-services and paper applications are available from the school cafeteria or Nutrition Services Department. Free and Reduced Meal Applications can be submitted at any time during the school year. If parents have questions, please call 303-347-3355. SAVE THE DATE: Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held one night in the fall - Wednesday, October 17, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please mark your calendars and save the date for this opportunity to spend a few minutes with each of your student’s teachers. CHAPERONES NEEDED: The Homecoming Dance is Saturday, October 6, and we need parent chaperones! There are two shifts available at the dance: ● 1st shift - 7:15-9:00 p.m. ● 2nd shift- 9:00-10:30 p.m. Please let Ms. Ranallo know if you are able to help at [email protected]. Thank you! ADDITIONAL ROADWAY MAINTENANCE WORK: In addition to scheduled road work on Prince Street this week, the City of Littleton will also be doing work on Elati Street between Fremont and Geddes from September 26 through October 10. This work is scheduled to take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. They expect to reduce traffic to one lane after school gets started. Students, parents and staff will need to pay careful attention to all construction barricades and signage. Please plan ahead and give yourself extra time to get to and from school or to find an alternate route! FOR STUDENTS: HEY HERITAGE COMMUNITY: The time has come to select a cause for this year’s Make A Difference Week. Make A Difference (MAD) Week happens in April and is planned by Community Relations. Every year, we ask the community to submit potential causes they would like to see receive the proceeds from MAD Week. If you or someone you know has a cause they would like to submit for consideration, please pick up an application from the front office or email Mrs. Charise Moore at [email protected]. Applications are due to Mrs. Moore by 4 p.m. on Monday, September 24. LIBRARY NEWS: ● Late Fines for the library were distributed to students in their Advisory classes on Friday, September 21. If you have fees of more than $5, you must pay the bookkeeper and/or bring the overdue book or Chromebook to her. Any fees less than $5 can be paid in the library. Please Note - Student fines listed as “$5.00 Est. Fine” means the book or Chromebook has not been returned, and the student has been charged the full price of the item (much more than $5!). The student needs to bring the item to the bookkeeper or pay the full replacement cost. If the item is brought back in good shape, then just the $5 fee would be owed. Thanks for your help in clearing up your fines so we can update your account. ● Have you seen the new library look? Stop by and see how the library has changed with comfortable seating and new bookcases. It’s a new and improved learning space! SUPPORT BAND AND ORCHESTRA: Come out to our Restaurant Night on Wednesday, September 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Noodles in Aspen Grove. Be sure to mention Heritage High School, and 25% of sales will benefit the HHS Instrumental Music Foundation! ENRICHMENT 2018-2019: All students need to refresh their schedules in Infinite Campus (IC) every Tuesday and Thursday morning to see if they have been scheduled to meet with a teacher during Enrichment. If a teacher has requested to see you, it will appear as a temporary class in your schedule for the day and as a notification in your IC account. If you’ve been called, please go directly to your assigned Enrichment class after 2nd Period. If you have not been called, go to your regular Enrichment class. If you have any questions, please talk to your Advisory/Enrichment teacher. ATTENTION STUDENTS: Do not use VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) to get around district Wi-Fi firewalls. The firewalls are there for your protection! Students come to the Tech Office every day because they have been blocked from the free district-provided Wi-Fi, usually on their phones. The district will block devices that use VPNs or other apps that try to circumvent the firewall. Students can get only one unblock, then the device/student is permanently blocked. If students need to text, they can install something like Google Hangouts or WhatsApp. These apps work because they use the Wi-Fi and not cell connection. If you have any questions, please stop by the Tech Office (via the Counseling Office) or email Jo Andrews at [email protected]. SIGN UP FOR THE ARMED SERVICES VOCATIONAL APTITUDE BATTERY (ASVAB): Heritage and LPS use student ASVAB scores as a non-recruiting aptitude and career exploration assessment to assist students with identifying occupations that best suit their abilities. The ASVAB is currently one of the State and District adopted measures in both English and Math for demonstrating competency for graduation for current 10th grade students. There is no cost to take this test on the morning of Wednesday, October 10. Students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade can sign up by Monday, October 1, in the Post Grad Center. SIGN UP FOR THE FALL PSAT/NMSQT: Juniors seeking one more practice opportunity prior to the SAT next spring or seeking to enter the National Merit Scholarship Competition should take this test. Sophomores seeking an early exposure to this version of the PSAT test will benefit as well. The test will be given on the morning of Wednesday, October 10. Students need to register and pay the $16 fee in the Post Grad Center by Friday, October 5.
