The Town of Foxborough’s first ever Senior Olympics came to Gillette Stadium on Satur- day, May 18th. Nearly 90 Foxborough senior citizens competed in a 2-mile walk around the stadium field, a standing long jump and a softball throw on the home turf of the six-time Super Bowl champions. Foxborough Council on Aging and Human Services Director Marc Craig introduced the Senior Olympics to Foxborough after success- fully hosting the event in Randolph for the past five years. “The impact is having as many seniors as we can participate in a community planned activity, so hopefully they can grow, make new friends and all by staying as active as pos- sible,” said Craig. The Senior Olympics began on May 14 and included events like a half-mile walk around the center of town, a corn-hole toss, darts, a basketball free-throw competition and a 1-mile walk around the Booth Recreation Complex. Many seniors said they enjoyed being at Gil- lette Stadium and found the experience to be “extra special” because they had the stadium all to themselves. “This was a complete surprise,” said Tenny Flemming. “We were expecting to have these events at Booth Field before it was announced it would be held at Gillette Stadium.” Flemming heard of the Senior Olympics at other senior centers and signed up right away when Foxborough announced its own Olympics. After the events concluded, the group visited the Patriots Media Workroom where Craig held a mock press conference for the seniors in attendance. The Senior Olympics concluded at the Foxborough Senior Center with a medal ceremony to award senior Olympians with gold, silver and bronze medals in each category. Next year, Craig hopes to have 100 partici- pants and include more games, including some brain-boosting challenges. “Being able to host the final event at Gillette Stadium was a career highlight for me,” Craig said. “Seniors have been overwhelmingly positive about being able to participate in the events at Gillette. Weeks later the hallways were still buzzing with excitement over the Senior Olympics.” Isabella Borg contributed to this story. 5 TOUR DE PAT Patriots celebrate Super Bowl LIII Championship with trophy tour through town In celebration of the Patriots’ sixth Super Bowl championship, the team took the Super Bowl LIII Lombardi Trophy on a tour through Foxborough. RIOTS A RIDE WITH THE CHAMPS Two days after the Patriots received their Super Bowl LIII Championship rings, the team continued the celebration of their sixth Super Bowl title by making a special appearance in the Foxborough Founders Day Parade on June 8.

One lucky Foxborough family had the opportunity to ride alongside Patriots players Rex Burkhead, David Andrews, Brandon King, Keionta Davis and Stephen Anderson and the team’s six Lombardi Trophies as the winner of the Q1 2019 Partners in Patriotism newsletter contest: Resident Playbook.

Lauren Smith, a 12-year resident, won the contest and invited her husband, Anthony, their son, Domenic, and Domenic’s two friends, Jameson Sylvia and Jackson Rolince to ride on the Patriots float with her. Upon learning she had won the contest, Lauren could not wait to tell Domenic.

“The Patriots are their heroes, icons and part of their community,” Lauren said of Domenic and his friends. “This team continues to bring us all together and I think it’s important Domenic and his friends see what hard work and dedication to do.”

Lauren said being alongside the players in the parade was the best part of the day for her and her family.

“They were welcoming and just so appreciative of the support of the crowd,” Lauren said. “The Patriots staff was amazing, too. They went above and beyond to make sure the boys had a great time. This will be a memory [Domenic] will never forget.” Isabella Borg contributed to this story. 7 Partners in Patriotism
