2016 Rockpile Zinfandel Vineyard Notes Technical Specifications These vines live in granitic loam soil with blue clay and have a perfect Appellation view of Lake Sonoma. Even though the AVA gained its separate status Rockpile in 2002, this area has been referred to as Rockpile since the 1850s. Located in Northern Sonoma County, at the northwest corner of Dry Creek Valley, the Rockpile AVA encompasses nearly 15,000 acres, of Composition which less than 160 are planted to vineyard. This makes Rockpile one 100% Zinfandel of the smallest AVAs in the United States in terms of acreage planted. Approximately 2,500 of the acres of the Rockpile AVA overlap the Alcohol Dry Creek Valley viticultural area to the Southeast. Vineyards range in elevation from 800’ to nearly 2,100’. There are many geographic 14.84% and geological features that separate Rockpile from its neighboring appellations. The combination of an elevation requirement, extreme pH terrain, and a unique climate make the vineyards and resulting wines unlike anything from Sonoma County, California—or the world for that 3.56 matter. Many readers will have visited Sonoma County in northern California wine country and sampled the Zinfandels made in the subregion named Dry Creek Valley. The 70+ wineries there are so small (median production is only about 4750 cases) that most sell all that they make at the “cellar door” (either in a tasting room or through Internet orders). Additionally, 150 grape growers sell fruit to these winemakers and another 80+ wineries besides. This direct sales link is vital to small wineries as it vastly reduces their costs of distribution. One result, is that there are many good wines that do not make their way onto retail shelves here, or do so only at a restricted set of outlets (basically the finer wine stores in town). To taste the gamut of Dry Creek wine making you really need to visit the area (and the ideal time is the weekend known as Passport To Dry Creek Valley each April). Notwithstanding that, sometimes the growers go out to their customers. This month, the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley brought several Dry Creek Valley winemakers to Dallas and I was fortunate to be a guest at their media event. Overall, the quality of their signature grape, Zinfandel, is higher than ever, with the overalcoholic overextracted sweet style of a decade ago replaced with wines that, while certainly bristling with power, also have complexity and the alcohol and sweetness in balance with each other and the other components. In a telling change from that ‘other’ style — these wines age. Examples from 2001 and 2004 exhibited resolved flavors and reassuring but approachable tannins that young Zinfandel usually lacks.

The Blackbird 2018 Dissonance from Napa Valley is a delightfully refreshing blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon that is simply bursting with lovely aromatics of sweet pear, honey, and subtle grassy notes wrapped in a bright and exceedingly supple texture. Mendocino is an ideal place for cool climate Pinot Noir which gives the Waits-Mast 2016 Oppenlander Vineyard its combination of effusive burnt cherry, sweet vanilla, cloves and hints of chocolate. We are enamored with this wine! Only 145 cases produced. Dan Cederquist has a wealth of experience making Zinfandel in Sonoma County. His Rockfish 2016 Zinfandel from the remote and high elevation Rockpile Appellation shows juicy berry character and intriguing layers of sweet caramel oak character. Only 98 cases produced. The Portalupi Winery specializes in Italian varietals and their 2018 Barbera from the Shake Ridge Ranch in Amador County is quite possibly the best Barbera made in California. Its supple dark juicy berries and mouthwatering acidity are so appealing. Just 630 cases produced. The harmony and complexity of a Cabernet Blend truly shines when all the components are well integrated.

Grower Feature: Florence Vineyard, Rockpile Carol has a standing "hot" date with Jack Florence, Sr., every year at sunrise on the day they harvest his vineyard in Rockpile. This "mad affair" started back in 2000, the year Carol started the winery and first purchased Zinfandel from Jack. They were connected by Kent Rosenblum, a mutual friend and a winemaker also purchasing Jack’s Zin fruit. Jack and other growers in the as-yet-undefined Rockpile area were in the process of getting government approval of Rockpile as an American Viticultural Area (AVA), and they needed noteworthy winemakers to use their high elevation grapes for some stellar wines that would get a lot of publicity for the quality of the region. A part of the approval process is that wines made from the proposed AVA must be shown to have "distinctly different character" from the wines of nearby appellations, like Dry Creek Valley, which Rockpile overlaps. Carol’s 2000 Rocky Reserve Zin won a unanimous 5-Star Gold medal from the prestigious Orange County Fair judging, which all but guaranteed Rockpile a spot on the appellation map! Certainly the wine is outstanding, but who is Jack Florence, Sr., and why is his vineyard in Rockpile so special? Before he started growing grapes in Sonoma County, Jack Florence, Sr. was a born and raised New Yorker, with a degree in Nuclear Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic University. He spent over 20 years in that industry, developing nuclear energy as a resource, with most of his time spent traveling to and from Asia. Over the years, it was increasingly difficult to spend so much time away from his wife Fran and their three kids.
