Click Here To see a sample of the frames from the dvd, please click here Photographer, LEWIS MORLEY - 46 min 37seconds PAL Video/DVD Considered one of the most significant voices of 1960's London, Lewis Morley took one of the most singular iconic images of this period - a naked Christine Keeler on an Arne Jacobson chair. At the height of the Profumo Scandal, this image of sex and power has often overshadowed his remarkable sampling of fringe actors, musicians and fringe-dwellers of London's swinging Sixties. These players included David Frost, Joe Orton, Charlotte Rampling, Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, the first published photo of fashion models Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton and the young actor Michael Caine. Brian Epstein, Clint Eastwood, Judi Dench, Lindsay Anderson, Peter O'Toole, Vanessa Redgrave, John Cleese, Francois Truffaut, Salvador Dali, Tom Jones and Barry Humphries - indeed, almost everyone who was 'The Sixties". In 1971, as Swinging London faded and Britain entered a recession, Lewis and his family emigrated to Australia, where he worked extensively for Australian design & fashion magazines. He continued his portrait work including artists Lloyd Rees, Brett Whiteley, controversial figure Juni Morosi, and writer Peter Carey. The video has Morley discuss his sessions with Caine, Twiggy, Shrimpton, and the background to his working life at Peter Cook's Club 'The Establishment', where he was resident photographer. 3.4. HISTORICAL TIMELINE The following tables contains a chronology of significant events in the history of the site and the subject building as summarised from Sections 3.2 and 3.3 and building/development application information drawn from the City of Sydney Planning Cards. The development of the site can generally be separated into four phases of development, as follows: 1. New Belmore Market 1893 - 1913 2. Wirths Hippodrome 1914 – 1926 3. Capitol Theatre 1927 – 1991 4. Restored Capitol Theatre 1992 – Present Table 4 – Historical Timeline Date Event 1866 Construction of Belmore Markets begins on a site bounded by Castlereagh, Hay, Pitt and Campbell. 1869 Belmore Markets opens on 14 May. Phase 1: New Belmore Markets 1893 Second Belmore Markets (Capitol site) open. Used for theatrical and circus performances on Saturday nights. 1910 Council decides that the Tivoli and Capitol (two theatres) would be erected on the sites of the old and new Belmore Markets. 1912 Wirth Bros takes a 10-week lease on the new Belmore Theatre for a ‘circus and hippodrome’. The council claimed the auditorium could be used as hippodrome, circus, theatre, opera house, concert hall, vaudeville entertainment hall or for photo plays (early silent motion pictures). Phase 2: Wirths Hippodrome 1914-1915 Belmore Markets dismantled and re-erected as the Hippodrome – home of Wirths Circus in Australia. The detail of the market walls was erected 10 metres higher. 1916 On April 3, Wirths Circus and Hippodrome opens – the largest theatre in Australia. The 13-metre ring in front of the proscenium arch had a hydraulically operated floor which dropped to fill with water for aquatic events. -

MISREPORTING BY CENTENNIAL COAL… Nature Conservation Council (NCC) investigative team found a major coal company in NSW, Centennial Coal, massively underestimated carbon emissions from its mines for at least 10 years. Last month, Centennial Coal applied to open a new mine near Lithgow called Angus Place. The company claims its mine will generate 0.36 million tonnes of carbon pollution a year, but the true number is 10 million tonnes a year. The company under-reported its emissions by 97%! Digging deeper, NCC discovered this was not the first time Centennial Coal has made such a colossal “mistake”. Documents show the company has massively under-estimated carbon emissions in relation to several of its coal mines dating back to 2010. NCC passed this information on to the Sun Herald, and the findings were published on page 3 of their 10 May 2020 edition – see https://www.smh.com.au/environment/climate-change/we- stuffed-up-coal-miner-admits-to-submitting-wrong-emissions-data-20200508-p54r6i.html NCC also asked the NSW Planning Department to investigate and prosecute Centennial Coal if it has broken any laws. Coal mining and coal-fired power generation contribute to devastating bushfires, floods and heat waves like those we saw last summer. We must do everything we can to switch from dirty fossil fuels to clean wind, solar and storage to prevent the climate heating to dangerous levels. … AND THE TRUE IMPACT OF USE OF WATER BY COAL MINING INDUSTRY The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) has released a new report that brings us closer to understanding the true impact the coal industry has on our water across this dry continent of ours. -

Sharing an interest in subcultural groups and individuals on the margins of society, each artist candidly portrays bohemian life of the 1970s and early 1980s. Their intimate depictions of people, places and events provide glimpses of semi- private worlds, amplifying the emotional tenor of the times. An extensive display of Jerrems’ photographs includes Vale Street (1975), her iconic photograph of local teenagers; portraits taken for the landmark feminist publication A Book About Australian Women (1974); a suite of prints documenting life on campus at Macquarie University, Sydney; and a series she took in hospital while she was dying from a rare illness, including frank self- portraits.
