The Gallery’s governing body, the Council of the National Gallery of Australia, has expertise in arts administration, corporate governance, administration and financial and business management. September 4 - October 27, 1984 ISBN 0 85901 258 1 p.l PREFACE Fundamental to the Tasmanian School of Art Gallery Committee's exhibition policy is the commitment to exhibit work from outside Tas­ mania. Normally the selected works are re­ ceived in crates, unpacked and displayed. Occasionally the artist may be present to install the work or to participate in con­ current lectures/seminars. The latter can give greater meaning to the completed work, but rarely is there an opportunity to witness the work in progress. The Gallery exists within an art school, and this exhibition was intended to extend the normal educative role of exhibitions. Each artist spent approximately two weeks "in residence", developing and completing a work. The piece didn't have to be "site specific", so preliminary work could commence prior to arrival. However, it was essential that further evolution took place on site. There was no intended thematic link between the four artists; buf what they had in common was a body of work which illustrated an ability to participate within the exhibition's frame­ work and an involvement in a range of disciplines (without any being easily cate­ gorized within any particular discipline). The diversity proved to be a considerable asset. Not only did the audience gain an insight into the range of conceptual posi­ tions of four professional artists, but also into the individual pre-occupations and idio­ syncracies of their particular art practice.

    John Gould and David Attenborough: seeing the natural world through birds and Aboriginal bark painting by Donna Leslie* Abstract The English naturalist and ornithologist, John Gould, visited Australia in the late 1830s to work on a major project to record the birds of Australia. In the early 1960s, around 130 years later, the English naturalist, David Attenborough, visited Australia, too. Like his predecessor, Attenborough also brought with him a major project of his own. Attenborough’s objective was to investigate Aboriginal Australia and he wanted specifically to look for Aboriginal people still painting in the tradition of their ancestors. Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory was his destination. Gould and Attenborough were both energetic young men, and they each had a unique project to undertake. This essay explores aspects of what the two naturalists had to say about their respective projects, revealing through their own published accounts their particular ways of seeing and interpreting the natural world in Australia, and Australian Aboriginal people and their art, respectively. The essay is inspired by the author’s curated exhibition, Seeing the natural world: birds, animals and plants of Australia, held at the Ian Potter Museum of Art from 20 March to 2 June 2013. An exhibition at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, Seeing the natural world: birds, animals and plants of Australia currently showing from 20 March 2013 to 2 June 2013, explores, among other things, lithographs of Australian birds published by the English naturalist and ornithologist John Gould [1804-1881], alongside bark paintings by Mick Makani Wilingarr [c.1905-1985], an Aboriginal artist from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory (Chisholm 1966; McCulloch 2006: 471; Morphy 2012).

Keywords: Aboriginal art; bark painting; Smithsonian; Baldwin Spencer; Tony Tuckson; Charles Mountford; ANTA To post-war tourist audiences in the USA, the imagery of Australian Aboriginal culture and, within this, the Arnhem Land bark painting was a subtle but persistent current in tourism promotions, which established the identity and destination appeal of Australia. This paper investigates how the Australian Government attempted to increase American tourism in Australia during the post-war period, until the early 1970s, by drawing on the appeal of the Aboriginal art imagery. This is set against a background that explores the political agendas "of the nation, with regards to developing tourism policies and its geopolitical interests with regards to the region, and its alliance with the US. One thread of this paper will review how Aboriginal art was used in Australian tourist designs, which were applied to the items used to market Australia in the US. Another will explore the early history of developing an Aboriginal art industry, which was based on the Arnhem Land bark painting, and this will set a context for understanding the medium and its deep interconnectedness to the land.

Djambawa as a senior artist as well as sculpture and bark painting has produced linocut images and produced the first screenprint image for the Buku-Larr\gay Mulka Printspace. His principal roles are as a leader of the Madarrpa clan, a caretaker for the spiritual wellbeing of his own and other related clan’s and an activist and administrator in the interface between non-Aboriginal people and the Yol\u (Aboriginal) people of North East Arnhem Land. He is first and foremost a leader, and his art is one of the tools he uses to lead. As a participant in the production of the Barunga Statement (1988),which led to Bob Hawke’s promise of a treaty, the Royal Commission into Black Deaths in Custody and the formation of ATSIC , Djambawa drew on the sacred foundation of his people to represent the power of Yolngu and educate ‘outsiders’ in the justice of his people’s struggle for recognition.

    Exhibiting hope and creating social inclusion in our own ways AN ART EXHIBIT BY AFGHAN YOUTH OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA A while ago, we heard a document created by young women at the Muslim Women’s Association of South Australia. It was called, ‘We try not to take people’s hate into our hearts’: Hi. We’re a group of young Muslim women who live here in Adelaide. We’re interested in exchanging ideas and stories about ways of dealing with weird experiences like being stared at, being yelled at by random strangers driving by in their cars, or other strange stuff that happens here and other places. We’ve included here some of our stories and skills we’ve developed. We’d been keen to hear your ideas! There are a few different ways that we try not to take people’s hate into our hearts … When we heard these young women’s stories we said: “It’s amazing! Fantastic! We loved it. Thank you for sharing your words! We are a group of young Afghanis, both young women and young men. Your words made a good contact with our lives. The experiences were really familiar. Some of us are artists and photographers. We talked about how some of your stories could be turned into art or paintings or drawings. Would you be interested in this? Maybe we could work on this together?” And so we have! In this exhibit you will find our photography, paintings, calligraphy and songs. We hope you like them! About this project Since July 2016, Afghan Youth of South Australia (through Lutheran Community Care) has been involved in a ‘Contributing to Social Cohesion and Harmony’ project coordinated by Dulwich Centre Foundation.
