  • Settled History?
Settled history? (Fifth draft 19 August 2015) Andrzej Kozlowski The University of Warsaw The battle A battle is being waged over a obscure episode in the history of the War in the Pacific involving two close allies of the United States, which has been having a damaging effect on US foreign policy while largely escaping the attention of the US public. The dispute concerns the so called “comfort women”, a euphemism for military prostitutes (or, as one of the competing versions would have it, “sex slaves”) used by the Japanese military during the Second World War. The battle ground has largely been the United States, both at local and national levels. The weapons are monuments [LADN] being built in various parts of the United States, newspaper articles and lately school textbooks and the strategic aim is a long term influence on American public opinion. The Texbook Controversy The latest episode in this ongoing struggle involves a McGraw-Hill school history textbook, authored by a J.H Bentley and F. Ziegler [BZ]. Here is how the Wall Street Journal [WSJ1] presented this story: In December, Japan’s foreign ministry asked U.S. publishing company McGraw-Hill Education to alter the Ziegler textbook’s description of Japan’s “comfort women” program during the war. That prompted a letter of protest from a group of prominent U.S. historians. 2 Unfortunately the offending passage is not quoted and neither is the letter of the protesting historians, who are described as “prominent” although it is not clear in which areas of history and how related they are to the matter in dispute.

  • Marine Nuclear Power 1939 – 2018 Part 1 Introduction
Marine Nuclear Power: 1939 – 2018 Part 1: Introduction Peter Lobner July 2018 1 Foreword In 2015, I compiled the first edition of this resource document to support a presentation I made in August 2015 to The Lyncean Group of San Diego (www.lynceans.org) commemorating the 60th anniversary of the world’s first “underway on nuclear power” by USS Nautilus on 17 January 1955. That presentation to the Lyncean Group, “60 years of Marine Nuclear Power: 1955 – 2015,” was my attempt to tell a complex story, starting from the early origins of the US Navy’s interest in marine nuclear propulsion in 1939, resetting the clock on 17 January 1955 with USS Nautilus’ historic first voyage, and then tracing the development and exploitation of marine nuclear power over the next 60 years in a remarkable variety of military and civilian vessels created by eight nations. In July 2018, I finished a complete update of the resource document and changed the title to, “Marine Nuclear Power: 1939 – 2018.” What you have here is Part 1: Introduction. The other parts are: Part 2A: United States - Submarines Part 2B: United States - Surface Ships Part 3A: Russia - Submarines Part 3B: Russia - Surface Ships & Non-propulsion Marine Nuclear Applications Part 4: Europe & Canada Part 5: China, India, Japan and Other Nations Part 6: Arctic Operations 2 Foreword This resource document was compiled from unclassified, open sources in the public domain. I acknowledge the great amount of work done by others who have published material in print or posted information on the internet pertaining to international marine nuclear propulsion programs, naval and civilian nuclear powered vessels, naval weapons systems, and other marine nuclear applications.

  • Eddie Jackson Cook, Second Class Eddie Was Born In
Eddie Jackson Cook, Second Class Eddie was born in Greenville, Mississippi on September 17, 1917 to Andrew and Gertrude Jack- son. Greenville is on the Mississippi River, just across from Arkansas. In 1920 the family was liv- ing in Lucas, Arkansas. There are very few records regarding Eddie’s young life, not suprising as this was in the south in the 1920/30s and Eddie was black. They must have moved toward Ten- nessee, because, at the age of 19, Eddie enlisted in the Navy on June 2, 1936, through Nashville. On October 22, 1936, Eddie reported to his first ship USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) as a Mess Attendant, Third Class. In 1937, the ship remained in port until 17 February, when she departed for San Clemente, California at the start of a tour along the west coast. She participated in Fleet Problem XVIII, which lasted from 16 April to 28 May. Another stint in Puget Sound began on 6 June and concluded on 3 September, when she returned to San Pedro. She spent the rest of the year alter- nating between there and San Francisco, seeing little activity. She made a short trip to San Francisco in February 1938 and took part in Fleet Problem XIX from 9 March to 30 April. Another period in San Pedro followed until 20 June, after which she embarked on a two-month cruise along the west coast that concluded with another stay at Puget Sound on 28 September. After concluding her repairs on 16 December, she returned to San Pedro by way of San Francisco, arriving on 22 December.
