Yet, a considerable proportion of people (17% in Study 1) who self-identify as vegetarian are actually pescatarians— those who forgo all meats except fish. Research on the psychology of pescatarianism is profoundly lacking, which may hinder future interventionists’ efforts to improve diet. Through two preregistered studies of adults from the United States recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk (total N = 490), we investigated pescatarianism with respect to dietary identity, motivation, and attitudes toward animals. Results suggest that future research may benefit from studying pescatarians as a distinct dietary group and paying greater attention to whether or not pescatarians self-identify as vegetarian. Part One of this thesis is a systematic review of research into protective factors against eating disorders and disordered eating in proximal social systems. A range of potential protective factors in families, schools, peer groups and neighbourhoods are identified. Many of these factors may be non-specific to eating difficulties, promoting a range of positive outcomes, while others may be more specific to disordered eating. Methodological issues in the literature which limit the ability to draw firm conclusions are discussed. Part Two presents empirical research into the impact of intermittent fasting (IF) diets on eating psychopathology, binge eating, food craving and mood. Contrary to expectation, starting a 5:2 IF diet did not result in increases in disordered eating or binge eating in healthy adult dieters, and in fact appeared to result in improvements in all outcomes. Higher scores on measures of risk factors for eating disorders at baseline were associated with greater reductions in disordered and binge-eating over the 28 day IF period.

Balanced nutrition (1) includes drinking plenty of clean water and regularly eating foods from each of six food groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, milk products, meat and beans, and oils. These foods contain six kinds of nutrients: proteins (2), carbohydrates (3), fats (4), minerals (5), vitamins (6), and water (8). A person should regularly eat or drink enough of all of these nutrients to grow and remain healthy. For infant nutrition (8), mother’s milk itself provides an ideal balance of nutrients, with the gradual introduction of solid foods after four to six months of age. If a variety from all food groups is eaten regularly, it is not usually necessary to take supplements (9). Even carefully chosen vegetarian (10) diets that include dairy products or eggs can be quite sufficient. But if little or no animal products are eaten, then grains must be eaten with legumes (beans, peas, peanuts, and lentils), nuts, and seeds to provide balanced protein. Food and drink must also be clean and free from disease-causing germs (bacteria, viruses, and parasites) to be healthy. Purified water (10) (potable water) is prepared by removing dirt from the water and treating the water to remove or kill germs. In some areas, the government purifies water that is delivered through secured plumbing; this water is safe to use directly from the faucet for food and drink.

Studies in rodents suggest that a reduction in leptin level during weight loss signals to the brain to increase feeding and decrease energy expenditure. In this issue of the JCI, Rosenbaum et al. examined this concept in obese patients who lost weight and were maintained at 10% below their initial weight (see the related article beginning on page 2583). Brain activity responses to visual food stimuli were visualized using functional MRI. Leptin levels fell during weight loss and increased brain activity in areas involved in emotional, cognitive, and sensory control of food intake. Restoration of leptin levels maintained weight loss and reversed the changes in brain activity. Thus, leptin is a critical factor linking reduced energy stores to eating behavior. Potentially, leptin therapy could sustain weight loss by overriding the tendency toward energy conservation. I begin by sketching out the problematization of alimentary practices within a normalizing patriarchal framework, which some feminists argue is dominant within contemporary North American society. Within this problematization, eating—for many women—is a way to manage the body’s appearance and bring it into conformity with feminine norms, and also an ongoing opportunity to exercise the will over unruly bodily desires. I then consider the narratives of women who claim that veganism helped them to relinquish disordered eating habits, temper the emotional and psychological turmoil that surrounded their alimentary practices, and mitigate antagonism toward their own bodies. In short, the practice of veganism appears to have reproblematized eating for these women. Thus, I suggest, veganism can be an ethical practice of freedom: it can loosen the tight grip of patriarchal normalization as constituted in and through disordered eating habits, and constitute subjects that are ―a little less governed‖ by this form of power.
