Résumé : Les études de phylogénie moléculaire sur les Lépidoptères Rhopalocères et Zygènes sont de plus en plus nombreuses ces dernières années modifiant la systématique et la taxinomie de ces deux groupes. Une mise à jour complète est réalisée dans ce travail. Un cadre décisionnel a été élaboré pour les niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifique avec une approche intégrative de la taxinomie. Ce cadre intégre notamment un aspect biogéographique en tenant compte des zones-refuges potentielles pour les espèces au cours du dernier maximum glaciaire. Cette démarche permet d’avoir une approche homogène pour le classement des taxa aux niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifiques. Les conséquences pour l’acquisition des données dans le cadre d’un inventaire national sont développées. Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work. -

Opening of the meeting by a representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Mr Fernandez-Galiano, from the Secretariat, welcomed participants (see Appendix 1) and recalled that the Group was to develop its work within the programme of the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (Bern Convention). This implied that decisions on future activities had to be reported to the Standing Committee of the Convention for final adoption. He thanked the European Invertebrate Survey (EIS) for its suggestion for launching a group on invertebrate conservation within the Bern Convention (see document T-PVS (89) 34 revised). At the request of some delegates, the Secretariat explained the differences between the work to be developed by the Group and other activities in the field of invertebrate conservation, such as those of the European Communities. The Bern Convention counts at present 22 Contracting Parties, including the EEC. Ten of these Contracting Parties are states which do not belong to the European Community. Other states, such as Burkina Faso, Morocco, Poland, the Soviet Union and Tunisia have been invited to adhere to the Convention and they are likely to do so in the near future. -

It is based on a concatenated alignment of the mitochondrial gene COI and up to 11 nuclear gene fragments, using Bayesian inference of phylogeny. To avoid analytical biases that could result from our region-focus sampling, our European tree was grafted upon a global genus- level backbone butterfly phylogeny for analyses. In addition to a consensus tree, we provide the posterior distribution of trees and the fully-concatenated alignment for future analyses. -

Distribution Data, Threat Categories and Site Evaluation
Distribution data, threat categories and site evaluation by Martin C. D. SPEIGHT Summary The need for greater standardisation of the way in which distribution data are used as the basis for consigning invertebrates to threat categories, at both national and international levels, is considered. Some suggestions are made with a view to attaining an increase in standardisation. It is pointed out that the term 'threatened invertebrate' has limited value when not backed by generally agreed methods for consigning species to different threat categories. From a consideration of factors which render distribution records of unequal significance it is concluded that considerable caution must be exercised in basing threat categories simply on numbers of records and that the best distribution-data-based measure of a threatened species' status is the number of protected sites from which it is recorded. The need to secure sufficient resources to provide for species survival is stressed, as is the responsibility of specialists in advising what quantity and type of resources are required. A proposal on recognition of sites of international importance for protection of invertebrates is used as the basis for discussion throughout, demonstrating the need for decision on defin~tion of terms, criteria etc. if such proposals are to result in production of useful international protocols. Introduction The European Invertebrate Survey (EIS) has now existed for more than 20 years, to promote study of the distribution of European invertebrates. But it is only recently that the need for reliable distribution data on European invertebrates has been more widely recognised, in particular by people other than specialists in the study of invertebrates. -

SUMMARY The present paper reports the development of a public project addressed to build up and publish a DNA barcode reference library for the animal species occurring in Italy listed in the II, IV and V Annexes of the “Habitats Directive” 92/43/EEC. DNA barcoding is a global standard, namely a procedure based on a gene sequence located in a standardized genome region as a diagnostic biomarker for species. DNA barcodes data have been either produced in our laboratories or collected from the literature and international gene databases. They were subsequently used to assemble a database containing both genetic data and information related to the origin of the data. This project represents the first pilot store of DNA sequence data built-in interoperability within the portal of the National Network of Biodiversity of the Italian Ministry of the Environment. -
