Village List of Gujranwala , Pakistan
Census 51·No. 30B (I) M.lnt.6-18 300 CENSUS OF PAKISTAN, 1951 VILLAGE LIST I PUNJAB Lahore Divisiona .,.(...t..G.ElCY- OF THE PROVINCIAL TEN DENT CENSUS, JUr.8 1952 ,NO BAHAY'(ALPUR Prleo Ps. 6·8-0 FOREWORD This Village List has been pr,epared from the material collected in con" nection with the Census of Pakistan, 1951. The object of the List is to present useful information about our villages. It was considered that in a predominantly rural country like Pakistan, reliable village statistics should be avaflable and it is hoped that the Village List will form the basis for the continued collection of such statistics. A summary table of the totals for each tehsil showing its area to the nearest square mile. and Its population and the number of houses to the nearest hundred is given on page I together with the page number on which each tehsil begins. The general village table, which has been compiled district-wise and arranged tehsil-wise, appears on page 3 et seq. Within each tehsil the Revenue Kanungo holqos are shown according to their order in the census records. The Village in which the Revenue Kanungo usually resides is printed in bold type at the beginning of each Kanungo holqa and the remaining Villages comprising the ha/qas, are shown thereunder in the order of their revenue hadbast numbers, which are given in column o. Rokhs (tree plantations) and other similar areas even where they are allotted separate revenue hadbast numbers have not been shown as they were not reported in the Charge and Household summaries. -
The Saga of Grit and Cold Courage
THE SAGA OF GRIT AND COLD COURAGE TRIBUTE TO THE FIGHTERS OF 35 INFANTRY BRIGADE IN 1965 WAR: FIRST HAND ACCOUNT Maj Gen Yashwant Deva, AVSM (Retd) DEDICATED TO The forgotten martyrs of 35 Infantry Brigade, who sacrificed their sarvasva (the entire) — existence, even remembrance At Lord’s Beckoning Slain, thou shall achieve heaven; victorious, thou shall enjoy the earth. Therefore rouse O son of Kunti, resolve to fight. Bhaagvad Gita, Shalok 37, Discourse II i FOREWORD I recall Gen Deva, the author of this book when he was attending the Staff College. Posting as a Brigade Major after the course was indicative of the fact that the officer had done very well at the course. It was more so for a Signals officer, as normally officers from combat arms and not combat support arms got posted to this most important staff appointment for a Major. Nowadays with a Deputy Commander in the rank of Colonel and the Brigade Major upgraded to Lt Col, this has changed. After reading this book, I feel that the author has more than justified his selection as Brigade Major. He was blooded in battle like an infantry soldier and showed valour. He shouldered much responsibility in the operation of his Brigade in all the confusion connected with 1 Corps offensive in the Samba sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Tasks for his Brigade were changing at the drop of the hat and so was its grouping with formations. Yet the Brigade’s performance was creditable. 93 officers and soldiers of the Brigade got martyred in this war. -

Armour Operations: Indo-Pak Conflict 1965, by Kuldip Singh Sindhu
scholar warrior Armour Operations: Indo-Pak Conflict 1965 KULDIP SINGH SINDHU Hindu morale would not stand more than a couple of hard blows at the right time and place. – Field Marshal Ayub Khan, Murree, July 1965, during the planning of Operation Gibraltar. Introduction Truth is the first casualty in war – it surfaces only much later when someone decides to bare the facts, irrespective of affiliation. To protect individual reputations and glorify regimental histories, fictionalised accounts trend to creep in, far removed from actual events. This inhibits objective analysis, and we land up repeating history. Remarkably, in the short Indo-Pak conflict of 1965, engagements were decided more by quick thinking, motivated soldiers at troop, squadron and regiment levels, rather than the brilliance of the higher commanders or lofty plans. As one Pakistani defence analyst wittily put it, this conflict was “fought by just 20 Lt Cols and 40 Majors from both sides” – quite believable. Strategic Setting The 1965 conflict was the second Indo-Pak conflict, but the first involving large forces. Pakistan’s plans at the strategic level have always been bombastic, but not rooted to ground realities; India’s have always been defensive—instead of waging all-out war, prosecution is muted. In Western Command, Lt Gen Harbaksh Singh’s philosophy was defensive-offence—a mindset that percolated scholar warrior ä AUTUMN 2015 ä107 scholar warrior to the rank and file, evident from the slow pace of operations, and the timidity of Brigade Commanders and above. The conflict (and I use this term instead of war), because its scale and intensity was never above that of a skirmish, lasted just 17 days. -
