CULTURE OF PEACE INITIATIVE (CPI) January 2008

Dear Peacebuilding Colleagues,

THANK YOU for your continued participation in the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) and its annual highlight International Day of Peace on September 21.

Since 1983, at the request of the Office of the Secretary-General of the , Pathways To Peace (PTP) has submitted an Annual Report to the UN, summarizing the Peace Day activities of Participating Organizations worldwide. In this year‟s report, you will find many examples of diverse and creative ways in which people express Peace. Please see pages 16-70 for Peace Day activities by organizations, groups and individuals worldwide.

One of the objectives of CPI is to build co-operation between Peacebuilders along diverse paths throughout the world. In 2007, an important step was taken in that direction: CPI launched its Community Hub on WiserEarth. Through the advanced technology of WiserEarth, CPI Participants can now post information about their Peace Day events and other activities online. In 2008, CPI will continue to develop its web presence on WiserEarth with an even more sophisticated Community Group, where Participants can share resources and communicate with each other. Read more about the CPI Community Hub on page 76.

Another important development in 2007 was 30 Days of Peace, a collaboration project between CPI and Earthdance International that extended Peace Day celebrations from September 11 to October 10. One unique piece that this project brings to large scale global events is a greater level of quantification of participation and activity for the purposes of studying the effect on society and the environment. Please view the summary of 30 Days of Peace on pages 14-15.

Featured organizations in this year‟s report are United Religions Initiative (URI) and World Peace Prayer Society (WPPS), whose members actively participate in Peace Day each year. Also, on pages 73-74 you will find a list of other organizations that promote and coordinate Peace Day activities among their members.

CPI has a new website: welcome to www.cultureofpeaceinitiative.org!

“Acting in concert, we DO make a difference in the quality of our lives, our institutions, our environment, and our planetary future. Through co-operation, we manifest the essential spirit that unites us amidst our diverse ways”.

Most Sincerely, The Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) Secretariat

ABOUT THE CULTURE OF PEACE INITIATIVE (CPI)

ORIGINS At its 36th session of the United Nations, the General Assembly unanimously declared in a resolution adopted on November 30, 1981, that the opening of its annual session in September should be officially dedicated and observed as the International Day of Peace, devoted "to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples."

In 1983, Robert Muller, then Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, approved the initiative of Pathways To Peace (PTP) Founder and President Avon Mattison to coordinate the International Day of Peace with members of civil society representing diverse organisations. The following year, citizens in over 52 countries had responded to PTP‟s invitation to participate. In 1989, UN Secretary-General Perez de Cuellar granted status of Peace Messenger Initiative to PTP‟s “We The Peoples” Initiative. In 2006, the project was renamed Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) to better reflect the idea behind it.

Since its inception, the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) has continued to serve as an informal coalition of forerunners in the emerging field of Peacebuilding, to give evidence that Peace is a practical reality and necessity in the 21st century.

The annual highlight of the CPI, the International Day of Peace, marks our personal and planetary progress toward Peace, and reminds us that our commitment-- above all interests or differences of any kind-- is to Peace.

VISION AND PURPOSE The Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) is a co-operative Peacebuilding Initiative whose long- term purpose is to unite the strengths of existing organisations in building a Culture of Peace for succeeding generations. One of the purposes of CPI is to bring to light the previously unseen and unheard Peacebuilders and their organizations, through the focus point of the annual International Day of Peace, 21 September.

MESSAGE ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

New York, 21 September 2007

Dear friends,

Peace is one of humanity‟s most precious needs. It is also the United Nations‟ highest calling.

It defines our mission. It drives our discourse. And it draws together all of our worldwide work, from peacekeeping and preventive diplomacy to promoting human rights and development.

This work for peace is vital. But it is not easy. Indeed, in countless communities across the world, peace remains an elusive goal. From the displaced person camps of Chad and Darfur to the byways of Baghdad, the quest for peace is strewn with setbacks and suffering.

September 21, the International Day of Peace, is an occasion to take stock of our efforts to promote peace and well-being for all people everywhere.

It is an opportunity to appreciate what we have already accomplished, and to dedicate ourselves to all that remains to be done.

It is also meant to be a day of global ceasefire: a 24-hour respite from the fear and insecurity that plague so many places.

Today, I urge all countries and all combatants to honour this cessation of hostilities. And I ask people everywhere to observe a minute of silence at noon local time.

As the guns fall silent, we should use this opportunity to ponder the price we all pay due to conflict. And we should resolve to vigorously pursue ways to make permanent this day‟s pause.

On this International Day, let us promise to make peace not just a priority, but a passion. Let us pledge to do more, wherever we are in whatever way we can, to make every day a day of peace.

Thank you.

2007 PEACE DAY REPORT IDP VIGIL

The "International Day of Peace Vigil" is an idea of a growing number of individuals and groups bound only by a common belief that the power of prayer, meditation, or other sacred spiritual practice serves as a powerful means of encouraging peace and promoting a global ceasefire. We represent many various religious and spiritually oriented groups and a wide segment of civil society throughout the world, as well as representing ourselves as individuals, to support the objective of the International Day of Peace Vigil, which is:

"To encourage worldwide, 24-hour spiritual observations for peace and nonviolence on the International Day of Peace, September 21st in every house of worship and place of spiritual practice, by all religious and spiritually based groups and individuals, and by all men, women and children who seek peace in the world."

The International Day of Peace Vigil is a global undertaking that requires the efforts of many people of all faiths and beliefs to be successful. We encourage you to support the United Nations' call for a full day of global ceasefire on 21 September by observing the day in spiritual contemplation for peace, global ceasefire and nonviolence with other members of your community and/or the broader interfaith community.

IDP Vigil 2007 – a growing movement

This year‟s International Day of Peace Vigil broke a lot of records. The IDPV received 623 commitments on our website (www.idpvigil.com). After the event, we received a tremendous amount of feedback and photos about the success of the day. Each group celebrated the day differently. From yoga and peace poles to prayer and fasting, each group made a difference -- for peace.

Our 2007 records show that:

 We had 623 commitments across the world  70 countries  225 cities (outside of the USA)  42 US states  An estimate of nearly 500,000 participants  An average of 500 people per event

2007 PEACE DAY REPORT 30 DAYS OF PEACE

2007 Report

In the Beginning…

30 Days of Peace, founded in 2007 as an annual campaign, is a global networking and awareness raising project that seeks to track, link, and support the uncharted number of peace- related events and projects happening around the world each year in September and October. The central focus of 30 Days of Peace is the annual International Day of Peace held on September 21st.

The overarching goal of 30 Days of Peace is to increase participation in year round Peacebuilding efforts around the world.

30 Days of Peace, under the auspices of The Culture of Peace Initiative, is a joint project of Pathways To Peace, a United Nations NGO, and Earthdance International, a 501c3 not for profit organization.

The first annual 30 Days of Peace celebration began on September 11th, 2007, the 101st anniversary of 's creation of the modern non-violence movement, and concluded on October 10th, the birthday of the late international journalist and musician Daniel Pearl.

Included in 30 Days of Peace were the 11th Annual Earthdance Global Music and Dance Festival for Peace, September 15; and the 6th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days, October 1 -15. The combined reach of these two organizations alone is hundreds of event locations worldwide.

The inaugural 30 Days of Peace campaign began the process of formalizing this global event network, and linking the NGOs and non-profits behind the events. A beta website was launched, www.daysofpeace.org, supported by a publicity and viral awareness campaign, with a global events calendar and database that provided information on over 1,000 peace events that occurred throughout the world during 30 Days of Peace.

The following organizations were key allies in the first annual 30 Days of Peace:

 Common Passion  The Daniel Pearl Foundation  Music 4 Peace  We, The World  WiserEarth  World Peace Prayer Society

30 Days of Peace: A Celebration of Oneness

One sub-project of 30 Day of Peace in 2007 was 30 Days of Peace: A Celebration of Oneness, a series of meditation and prayers for community and global peace, organized and promoted by Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI), CommonPassion.org, Earthdance International, Association for Global , World Peace Prayer Society, Friends of the UN and many other local and global groups. This program was held between September 11, 2007 and October 10, 2007 and global participants came from many different faith-systems, indigenous communities and meditation assemblies.

A unique piece that this project brings to large scale global meditation and prayer events is a greater level of quantification of participation and activity for the purposes of studying the effect on society and the environment.

Each participating individual or group selected a day or days within the 30-day period in which to perform their specific prayer, meditative or celebrative practice, and enrolled on the CommonPassion site, providing a profile of the practice to be performed on the selected day(s).

A Shared Intention Agreement to foster collective coherence was jointly developed by participants, arrived at via dialogue in the CommonPassion Forum. The Shared Intention Agreement was:

I AM Peace, Love, Wisdom and Compassion. I smile in gratitude toward the divinity in all life.

The results that are reported here come from the CommonPassion web site registrations systems. In addition to these numbers, other groups and individuals participated but did not register on the CommonPassion site. By way of personal communiqué with co-collaborators, the estimated additional number is between 300,000 and 1,000,000 people.

Groups Individuals Group Individuals Total Individuals Total Registrants 52 247 334,914 335,161 Average Daily Participants 9 88 22,756 22,844

The two days that saw the highest number of participants were September 26 and 27 (330716 and 330793 individuals). A majority of the groups that signed up came from USA, but the country most represented among individuals was India. The most popular type of practice was meditation.

30 Days of Peace in 2008 and beyond

Created as an organic movement of many organizations and individuals, 30 Days of Peace expects to significantly expand its event network and Peacebuilding activities in 2008 and the years beyond. For more information, please visit the dedicated website: www.daysofpeace.org

UNITED RELIGIONS INITIATIVE (URI) INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE 2007

In the face of global division and violence, the United Religions Initiative (URI) strives to end religiously motivated violence and build cultures of peace, justice and healing. URI‟s work is accomplished by a global network of nearly 400 interfaith Cooperation Circles (CCs) or multi-faith grassroots coalitions made up of at least seven people from three or more faith traditions. URI‟s Cooperation Circles, in 66 countries, work daily in their communities to address issues including religiously motivated violence, poverty, hunger, environmental degradation, HIV/AIDS, and religious persecution. URI currently involves hundreds of thousands of people from nearly 90 faith traditions and spiritual expressions, including indigenous religions.

Summary of IDP Activities:

URI‟s global staff joined together on the morning of International Peace Day to hold hands around a Peace Pole in the grassy quad outside our office. Amidst the trees, we stood in a circle and read the United Nations Declaration before observing a moment of silence. We shared poetry, stories, and pictures on peace that have made an impact on our lives. And we knew that in over sixty countries, our Cooperation Circles were doing the same, in their own special and creative way.

In Aarhus, Denmark, URI members were hosting “Sounds of Peace,” an interfaith peace concert in two cities that drew hundreds of people together for fellowship and dialogue. In Amman, Jordan, URI members were visiting with homeless and socially troubled children at a local orphanage. One participant said, “We saw ourselves in them, and they saw their future in us.”

In Manila, Philippines, nearly two hundred people from all walks of life were participating in a musical celebration which wove a symphony of prayers, songs, and dances from various traditions. In Buenos Aires, Argentina, one of our communities planted a tree with a group of children. One member said, “We hope this tree that was planted before the eyes of many children and different communities will, in future years, protect the ground with its shadow and will go beyond generations.” And even beyond our organization, we knew that all over the world, millions of people were uniting with us towards a vision of lasting peace.

WORLD PEACE PRAYER SOCIETY (WPPS) INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE 2007

The World Peace Prayer Society (WPPS) is a non-sectarian, non-political organization associated with the Department of Public Information at the United Nations. The work of WPPS encompasses the globe in ways that support peace, harmony and goodwill among all citizens. WPPS is not a religions or a church organization. The mission of WPPS is to spread the Universal Peace Message and Prayer, May Peace Prevail on Earth, far and wide to embrace the lands and people of this Earth.

WPPS and International Day of Peace

The World Peace Prayer Society has been promoting the International Day of Peace at the United Nations and with the United Nations since 1996. WPPS saw Peace Day as a perfect opportunity for people of all nations and religions to join in the common prayer, “May Peace Prevail on Earth.”

The Society‟s IDP observance began modestly with a panel discussion at the Harvard Club in 1996 featuring Robert Muller, former UN Assistant Secretary-General and pioneer of the IDP. In 1997, WPPS UN Representative Deborah Moldow and Mr. Hassan Ferdous of the UN Department of Public Information drafted a program for students, to develop an activity with the UN‟s new web site for children, the CyberSchoolBus. The CyberSchoolBus went on to publish a peace poem compiled of contributions from children around the world, and has remained an active promoter of the IDP.

The student observance at the United Nations has remained a collaboration between the Dept. of Public Information and its NGO partners, including the World Peace Prayer Society, Pathways To Peace, and The United Religions Initiative. The Flag Ceremony, with its inspiring theme of “May Peace Prevail on Earth,” has remained a highlight of the event. Many other features have expanded, such as adding a link via teleconference to one or more UN peacekeeping sites, where children gathered to take part and share their stories. An exciting relationship has grown with the Messengers of Peace, appointed by the Secretary-General, who have graced the program with their passion and expertise–including Jane Goodall, Michael Douglas, Muhammad Ali, Anna Cataldi, Elie Wiesel and Yo-Yo Ma.

Peace Poles and Moment of Silence for Peace

In the 1990‟s, the WPPS encouraged a Moment of Silence at 12 noon in schools, and many responded enthusiastically. WPPS members, volunteer WPPS Peace Representatives in 40 countries, and sympathizers began planting Peace Poles on the International Day of Peace, and then gathering at their Peace Pole on subsequent IDPs for a Moment of Silence or prayers for peace on Earth. On several occasions, the World Peace Festival in Amenia, New York was held on or around the International Day of Peace, and the WPPS was also invited to bring the World Peace Flag Ceremony to the event organized by UN staff members in New York‟s Central Park for the past several years.

But the greatest factor in increasing worldwide participation in the International Day of Peace has been the advent of the Internet. WPPS augmented its IDP outreach to include a strong web presence and email outreach. Each year, WPPS submits a compilation of Peace Day activities, organized, by its members, to the UN.

Pinwheels for Peace Students will create pinwheels, pinwheels of all shapes and sizes – as part of the creation process, the students will write their thoughts about "war and peace / tolerance/ living in harmony with others" on one side. The writing can be poetry, prose, haiku, or essay-style – whatever writing form is appropriate as the children express themselves. On the other side, the students will draw, paint, collage, etc. to visually express their feelings. They will assemble these pinwheels and on International Day of Peace, Sept. 21, 2007, everyone will "plant" their pinwheels outside as a public statement and art exhibit/installation. The spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the country, the world! www.pinwheelsforpeace.com

WiserEarth – a free global networking forum

WiserEarth serves the people who are transforming the world. It is a community directory and networking forum that maps and connects non-governmental organizations and individuals addressing the central issues of our day: peace, climate change, poverty, the environment, water, hunger, social justice, conservation, human rights and more. Content is created and edited by people like you.

WiserEarth provides the tools and a platform for non-profit organizations, funders, social entrepreneurs, students, organizers, academics, activists, scientists, and citizens to find each other, make connections, build alliances and share resources. Its database of over 100,000 organizations makes it the largest, freely accessible, international directory of non-governmental organizations.

WiserEarth links organizations and people in new ways:

 Just like Wikipedia, WiserEarth invites its users to create and edit content on the site.  It is free of advertisements and commercial entities.  WiserEarth provides groups for networks that want a unique space to gather, share resources, collaborate on projects, and grow their network  WiserEarth provides grassroots groups that do not have a web presence with a web page driving visibility to help their work.  WiserEarth provides geographic maps to locate individual organizations, or any collection of organizations, from street to continent level.  WiserEarth offers free postings for the recruitment of staff, volunteers, and interns and will (in the future) offer a marketplace to share surplus resources and materials.

C. INFORMATION ON PATHWAYS TO PEACE, INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIAT FOR THE CULTURE OF PEACE INITIATIVE (CPI)

Pathways To Peace (PTP) is an international PeaceBuilding, Educational, and Consulting organisation. The mission of Pathways To Peace is threefold:  to expand the comprehension and substantive expression of “PEACE” and PeaceBuilding practices at all levels;  to build Cultures of Peace by uniting and enhancing the strengths of existing organisations and programs along eight paths to Peace;  to contribute, through consultation and direct participation, to the evolving mission of the United Nations and to citizens‟ worldwide participation in the International Day of Peace (Peace Day).

The Pathways To Peace mission is accomplished through projects and consulting services. Current projects include: Culture of Peace Initiative, Institute for Peacebuilding, IDP Vigil, Events with Peace Leaders, P*A*C*E*M – Pathways Consulting, Educating, Mentoring, and the Joan Kenley Show.

PTP project example: Institute for Peacebuilding (IPB) works with schools in the San Francisco Bay Area to bring an experience and understanding of Peacebuilding practices through assemblies, classes, and teacher training. IPB offers a university course called The Art and Practice of PeaceBuilding, and leads community PeaceBuilding workshops and weekend retreats. This Project has reached youth in over 70 countries. Media Project: The Joan Kenley Show – Conversation Radio – for the mind, body, heart, and soul. This program is dedicated to delving more deeply into what really matters, offering timely topics and action ideas that range from the personal to the global. Collaborative projects have included: Rights of the Child Caucus, World Summit of Children, and United Peoples Assembly. Affiliates include: EarthDance International, Ehama Institute, Global Youth Action Network, Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy, Peace Alliance Foundation, United Religions Initiative, and World Centers of Compassion for Children.

On a global scale, PTP serves as International Secretariat for the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) (formerly, “WE THE PEOPLES” INITIATIVE), a multicultural, intergenerational, citizens movement of established groups and organizations cooperating to build a Culture of Peace and to make Peace a practical reality in the 21st Century. International Day of Peace (Peace Day) September 21st is the annual period for Participating Organizations to highlight local/global progress toward Peace along diverse paths.

“Peace,” as defined by Pathways To Peace, is both an innate state of being and a dynamic, evolving process. Peace begins with ourselves; living in harmony with one another, the Earth, and all Circles of Life. PTP‟s operating principle-in-action is:

Acting in concert, we do make a difference in the quality of our lives, our institutions, our environment and our planetary future. Through cooperation, we manifest the essential spirit that unites us amidst our diverse ways.

Envisioned in 1945, Pathways To Peace initiated research and development in integrative decision- making in 1962, began consulting in the early 1970‟s, and was incorporated in 1983. PTP has Consultative Status with the United Nations (ECOSOC), (DPI). PTP was granted official UN Peace Messenger status in 1987.
