To overcome this challenge, we use data from professional soccer, where employees of the same club face different external career opportunities de- pending on their nationality. We test whether the career prospect of being selected to a Euro Cup national team affects players' pre-Cup performances, using nationals of countries that did not participate in the Euro Cup as a control group. We find that the Euro Cup career prospect has positive effects on the performances of play- ers with intermediate chances of being selected to their national team, but negative effects on the performances of players whose selection is very probable.

  • Liverpool Autographs Keep Kop Flag Flying
May 07, 2010 12:39 BST Liverpool autographs keep Kop flag flying Sports Idols is treating fans and collectors to eye-popping Liverpool autographs from past successes: the legendary Phil Thompson has lent his signature to several new pieces of Liverpool memorabilia; and all-time player-manager great Kenny Dalglish sees his John Hancock grace the 2009- 2010 end of season stocklist too. Dalglish, whose Liverpool record has more winning numbers on it than a multi-million pound lottery ticket (8 League Championship wins; 2 FA Cups; 3 European Cups; 4 League Cups; and 1 European Super Cup), exemplifies the “Never Walk Alone” spirit of Anfield. A fact that is sure to make Dalglish-signed Liverpool memorabilia number one in these faltering times. It’s not all bad, mind – there are plenty of clubs who aren’t even in Europe. And Sports Idols isn’t neglecting the current squad in their 2010 Liverpool football memorabilia collections: fans will find Liverpool autographs from Fernando Torres; Steven Gerrard; Xabi Alonso; Dirk Kuyt; Ryan Babel; Javier Mascherano; Jamie Carragher; Glen Johnson; and Albert Riera. In some cases (Gerrard, for example), Sports Idols selection of Liverpool memorabilia runs impressively wider: anyone who wants to own a genuine signed Steven Gerrard boot better get their skates on before the season ends and Liverpool’s most famous current hero flies off to South Africa. Which brings us to another little point. Liverpool memorabilia is always attractive (obviously) to Liverpool fans – signed Steven Gerrard memorabilia crosses boundaries with collectors of England souvenirs. This year is the year that England try, once again, to do something memorable in international competition (the triumph, some might say, of hope over experience): should they actually succeed, Liverpool football memorabilia featuring players from the current England squad will hit a new level of value.

NETHERLANDS - ITALY MATCH PRESS KIT Stade de Suisse, Berne Monday 9 June 2008 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Group C - Matchday 3 Contents 1 - Match preview 7 - Competition facts 2 - Match facts 8 - Team facts 3 - Squad list 9 - UEFA information 4 - Head coach 10 - Competition information 5 - Match officials 11 - Legend 6 - Match-by-match lineups Match background The Netherlands will look to end a 30-year wait for a win against Italy when they take on the world champions in their opening UEFA EURO 2008™ match in Berne. • Not since the 1978 FIFA World Cup have the Oranje got the better of Italy but Marco van Basten's men will be desperate to put recent history – to be specific, eight games without beating the Azzurri – behind them in the sides' first test in a tough-looking Group C that also includes France and Romania. • It was in Buenos Aires on 21 June 1978 that the Dutch last beat Italy, winning 2-1 in the teams' final game of the second group stage to secure a place in the World Cup final. Italy had taken the lead through an Ernie Brandts own goal but Brandts himself restored parity before Arie Haan struck the Netherlands' winner. • Italy have held the upper hand over the ensuing three decades, during which they have recorded two draws and six wins against the Oranje, including a penalty shoot-out triumph following a goalless semi-final at UEFA EURO 2000™. • Despite playing against ten men from the 34th minute when Gianluca Zambrotta was sent off, the tournament co-hosts paid the price for two missed penalties during normal time.
