Een dag na het ontslag van de Engelse routinier waren de Reds onder leiding van de nieuwe trainer Kenny 'King' Dalglish niet opgewassen tegen Manchester United in de derde ronde van de FA Cup: 1-0. De laatste keer dat Dalglish (59) Liverpool coachte op Old Trafford, bijna twintig jaar geleden waren de rollen nog omgekeerd. Liverpool heerste destijds op de Engelse velden, terwijl Alex Ferguson zijn eerste titel nog moest winnen met Manchester United. Nu wacht Liverpool al sinds 1990 op een kampioenschap. Liverpool won wel andere prijzen, waaronder bijvoorbeeld de Champions League, maar slaagde er nooit meer in kampioen van Engeland te worden. Diverse managers mochten de voorbije jaren miljoenen investeren, maar zonder het gedroomde resultaat. Afgelopen zomer stapte manager Rafael Benitez over naar Inter Milaan (waar hij inmiddels ook aan de kant is geschoven) en Liverpool stelde Roy Hodgson aan als coach. Dat bleek geen gelukkige keuze. Onder leiding van de Engelsman was de club bezig aan een rampzalig seizoen. De formatie staat in de competitie momenteel twaalfde, slechts vier punten boven de degradatiestreep. Zaterdag greep eigenaar John W. Henry in. Hodgson werd ontslagen en Liverpool stelde clublegende Kenny Dalglish aan als interim-manager tot het einde van het seizoen. De club waar hij tussen 1977 en 1991 al heel succesvol was als speler, en later als manager. Maar de nieuwe coach wist bij zijn eerste optreden de slechte reeks niet te doorbreken. Scheidsrechter Howard Webb, stuurde na ruim een half uur spelen Liverpool aanvoerder Steven Gerrard uit het veld voor een overtreding op Michael Carrick. Dalglish was desondanks niet ontevreden. 'Het is moeilijk om meteen tegen de sterkst mogelijke ploeg te moeten beginnen. Maar de spelers hebben gevochten voor wat ze waard waren.' Zaterdag riep hij bij zijn aanstelling op tot eenheid binnen de club. 'Ik ga mijn uiterste best doen om de club te helpen, maar alle gezichten zullen dezelfde kant op moeten staan. Als dat niet gebeurt, komen we nergens.' Bij Liverpool stond Dirk Kuyt in de basis en viel Ryan Babel na een uur in. Babel was na afloop nog wel het centrum van een relletje. Oorzaak: een montagefoto op zijn twittersite. De Nederlander beeldde arbiter Webb af in een shirt van Manchester United. De international reageerde hiermee zijn frustratie af over het optreden van de Engelse scheidsrechter in de bekerwedstrijd. Tottenham Hotspur bereikte zonder enige moeite de volgende ronde. Zonder Rafael van der Vaart won het met 3-0 van Charlton Athletic. Zaterdag kwamen zowel Arsenal als Chelsea al in actie. Arsenal sleepte dankzij een benutte strafschop van Fabregas een replay uit het vuur tegen Leeds United. Chelsea, dat in de competitie bezig is aan een vrije val,walste over Ipswich Town met 7-0. Patrick van Aanhol startte in de basis, hij werd na zeventig minuten vervangen door Jeffrey Bruma. Newcastle United werd uitgeschakeld door Stevenage (3-1), een club uit de vierde divisie. .

Set down beside a highway in an unprepossessing district of Amsterdam, it consists of eight well-kept playing fields and a two-story building that houses locker rooms, classrooms, workout facilities and offices for coaches and sports scientists. In an airy cafe and bar, players are served meals and visitors can have a glass of beer or a cappuccino while looking out over the training grounds. Everything about the academy, from the amenities to the pedigree of the coaches – several of them former players for the powerful Dutch national team – signifies quality. Ajax once fielded one of the top professional teams in Europe. With the increasing globalization of the sport, which has driven the best players to richer leagues in England, Germany, Italy and Spain, the club has become a different kind of enterprise – a talent factory.
